Yesterday we did a little update on Clipper Recommendations to bring it up to date. Let's follow up with your tool kit necessities (Beginner Friendly for those just starting out ) GROOMERS: FEEL FREE TO ADD COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS or answer questions for newbies Clippers 1 Speed, 2 Speed, & 5 Speed are the most common. They will typically run you about $200 for a basic heavy-duty clipper that will cut through anything you need at work. The $200 basic standard Andis brand is the AGC Super 2 speed. The $200 basic standard Wahl brand is the KM10 A lot of groomers I know started out with one of these and they carried us through many years of our career but we have since moved onto new brands. Please see Clipper Recommendations for the current standard clippers. 5-in-1's are very useful as a second clipper but you will not be using that as your standard, everyday clipper. (If you're a groomer with 5-in-1 recommendations, please go to that thread and add your input!) Blades Avoid Amazon (cheap knock-offs run rampant there) Standard vs Wide Blades - This is all preference, I've personally noticed most groomers in my area use wide blades now. Brands : Geib Buttercut, Artero, AGS, Zolitta, Heiniger, Andis, Wahl For professionals: You will need all the standard blade lengths for work. #30, #10, #7, #5, #4, (#3 may or may not be required by your salon.) You should have 2 of each blade to swap out as they get too warm, or in case one dulls/breaks. So you should have about 10 blades in your starter toolbox. GET BLADE OIL and make sure you're oiling and cleaning your blades regularly. Have an old toothbrush handy to brush out any hair that gets stuck in the teeth. Guard comb set Your guard comb set doesnt have to be the same brand as your clipper/blades but they do need to fit the blades you get. Check compatibility, ask a co-worker, ask us. The standard blade to use under a guard comb is a #30. You can do 10 & 15 in some cases but best results will be with a #30 Some brands label their guard combs with actual lengths, some label with numbers/letters. a 3/8 inch may say 3/8 or it might be a 2 depending on your set. Shears/Scissors Affordable Grooming Shears (A thread on the brand) What shears did you start with? $100-$150 Shears Brush Brushes / Brush recommendations Comb You can start with ANY 7.5in steel grooming comb. They're about $10+/- Heres a thread on favorite combs Nail Clippers & Dremels Nail clippers thread Dremels Shedding Tools Undercoat rake, SleekEZ, Kong ZoomGroom are always good basics. An undercoat rake is great for double coated dogs medium and long length hair like shepherds/huskies/pyrenees etc. A SleekEZ is great for shorter coats like labs/smooth shepherds, etc. A zoom groom actually works really well on most shedding coat types. Its great in a pug/chihuahua/lab/pit and even as a finisher brush the short parts of longer haired dogs like the top of the head/legs/ankles. Dryers? If your job does not provide you with a dryer, look for a new salon.
