In defense of the monstrosity that is House 5's "fire pit"
https://preview.redd.it/r6zpn82bputf1.png?width=2550&format=png&auto=webp&s=c734633765bc5b525affd13bdc9a74ae34a8b87a https://preview.redd.it/ubgacx2bputf1.png?width=2550&format=png&auto=webp&s=3ebfbaac0641ed1f454546a91de643f2ec493c4f The show uses many different camera angles when showing "The Block" that make it hard to figure out what you're looking at from wide views. The point is that the area in purple above--that is behind the houses--is likely to be developed similar to the neighborhood across the street the block, i.e. the only house with a view is House 1 because it is only partially obstructed and is on stilts. House 5's monstrous outdoor fireplace is just blocking sight of the future neighbors. Or the tree line. Also, the dramas over the wine cellars are silly. House 5's cellar was claustrophobic. It seems like they didn't have a lot of choice once the area had been mostly gifted to them, but it would've been better with shelving all around than a table. Not to mention, it's counterintuitive to have an electric wine fridge in a wine cellar. What their wine cellar needed as is was a sink. And I swear I saw an episode where Robbie/Matt (the one with the glasses) was standing in front of the hole and said something about them putting in plumbing, but obviously there is none. House 3 tried what House 2 had previously done to work around the rules and got caught. The problem is that a habitable space has to have insulation and their speakeasy/wine cellar was always going to be an issue when the house went to market because they would have had to disclose that it's a shed with painted walls. Considering how sensitive Taz has been to the cold, it's interesting that he didn't think it'd be an issue. submitted by /u/Lazy_Algae to r/TheBlock [link] [comments]

Can I safely build a table around my fire pit?
Hey all, I have an existing fire pit that I’d like to use in a more functional way. My idea is to either: 1. Build a table that surrounds the fire pit, or 2. Place the fire pit inside a table. My magnum opus as a dish pig, immortalized on security camera. It cost me my job.
You know that feeling at the end of a double? The steam has seeped into your bones, your back is a question mark, and the clatter of plates is the only music you hear. That was me last Tuesday at the buffet. I'm head-down, blasting away, trying to get the last racks done so I can finally go home. I finish a stack, look up, and the pit is silent. Eerily silent. I'm completely alone. I look down the hall, and that’s when I see it: a conga line of TEN full, heavy, stinking trash cans waiting to be hauled to the dumpster. My heart sinks. I wipe my hands and go looking for my "team." I round the corner to the back door, and there they are. All of them. And the closing manager with them, all just chilling, laughing, and enjoying a nice, long smoke break while I was soloing the mountain of filth inside. Something inside me just... snapped. I walked back to the pit, my blood boiling. I didn't say a word. I just grabbed the dish hose—you know, the big metal sprayer with the great trigger handle—and I absolutely lost my mind. I started slamming it against the stainless steel dish table. WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! The sound was glorious. A symphony of righteous rage. And at that exact moment, with the most theatrical timing I have ever witnessed, the baker walks in. She freezes, her eyes go wide, she does this dramatic little gasp with her hand to her chest like she just walked in on a murder. The next day, about 15 minutes into my shift, I get the call to the GM's office. He pulls up the security footage. There's me, in black and white, looking like a silent film villain having a meltdown. I'm just wailing on the table with the sprayer. Then, stage left, the baker enters and reacts like she's in a Shakespearean tragedy. My boss didn't even look angry, just sort of resigned. We watched it together, and honestly, it was hard not to be a little impressed by the sheer drama of it all. He said, "I think you know we have to let you go." I just nodded. I knew. But for that one beautiful, cathartic moment of pure, unadulterated release? Worth it. TL;DR: After a double shift, my lazy coworkers and manager left me with 10 trashcans to take a smoke break. I had a spectacular, caught-on-camera meltdown with the dish hose just as the baker walked in, and was gloriously fired the next day. submitted by /u/PortobelloSwiss to r/dishwashers [link] [comments]

Built a fire pit in the yard and now I’m out there every weekend
I put together a little gravel circle with some bricks I had hanging there, added a couple of chairs, an outdoor table and that was it but it really changed how I use the yard. It’s really chill hanging there in the evening cause the temps cool down a little too. I spend the whole sunday there just grilling some steaks drinking a couple of beers and playing on jackpot city. I’m thinking of buying some solar lights to put them there or maybe a cantilever umbrella next just to hang out there on sunny days too. Anyone else done a similar setup? Would love to hear what small upgrades made a noticeable difference for you. submitted by /u/Head-Summer-8964 to r/gardening [link] [comments]

Backyard: is a table better or a fire pit?
I have a backyard for my Airbnb. I have enough patio space for a fire pit or a table. My husband says tables will be used more often (I agree) but I think a fire pit will attract more guests. Thoughts? submitted by /u/icecream-eggs to r/airbnb_hosts [link] [comments]

Wife wanted a smokeless fire pit
When we were building our house I knew I wanted to put a fire pit out overlooking our creek. my wife had asked for me to put a propane fire pit out there and I really just hated the idea of propane out there instead of wood. So I watched an absolute ton of YouTube videos and tried to find as much information as I could about the geometry of the solo stoves and after I had an idea what I wanted, designed a smokeless fire pit. I have a buddy that owns a steel shop and I was able to get the 5/16 plate lasered out and broken for the inner liner, which I then welded together in my shop. I added a removable grate and built a concrete countertop, and luckily my neighbor was able to come over with his tractor to help move it into place because the table top weighed close to 1000 pounds. I wrapped the cinderblock chimney with cedar to make it look like a table and my wife found some Adirondack chairs to finish it off. I got a couple of wine barrel hoops, which I then welded together to make a kindling holder. it actually works really well and there is no smoke when it’s burning good and hot. submitted by /u/GonnaBuyMeAMercury to r/DIY [link] [comments]

Needed to replace my deck. Decided to spend 5 months in my backyard instead. Threw in an outdoor kitchen, gas fire pit and about 1,000 sq feet of concrete for good measure.
Howdy! My deck was in need of replacing, bad. Days of planning, turned into weeks, months and three years later, I started my project. Other than the concrete, this was done completely by myself, a few friends and my expert craftsman of a father. To deal with the grade of the yard, we ended up doing a three level concrete patio (three styles and colors, to differentiate), with the bottom most section housing a fire table with natural gas hook up. This was my first time ever doing a metal roof, stone work, or composite decking, but it was all pretty straight forward and I couldn't be happier with the results. I've included an imgur link, with a lot more pictures below: https://imgur.com/a/JoBKul8 Thanks for taking a peek and I hope you enjoyed!! While the experience was incredible and I got to spend countless of hours alongside my father, my wife and myself are beyond done with this project, ha. submitted by /u/abeck1023 to r/DIY [link] [comments]

Why are so many state parks set up with picnic table/ fire pits on the driver side instead of “camp” side?
I’ve noticed through the state parks at least- (Texas) that a lot of the “amenities” make you walk around the RV. This isn’t only based on “short” spots where a van could pull in instead of backing in -giving them a great view. (Which is what my parents do when they travel with us so we can “circle the wagons). But I’m just curious. Even though these parks are established- it’s not like we have switched the rvs. submitted by /u/ThatHomemadeMom to r/RVLiving [link] [comments]

Our fire pit was actually a well (Bone House)
At the request of many people, I’ll start including “bone house” in the title when I update, even if there aren’t bones in the specific post. I mean, there are in this one, but whatever. When I bought this house, it had been vacant for quite a while. The backyard had, among other creepy stuff, a burn barrel on top of a concrete pad (Photo 1). I had the burn barrel disposed of, and for a while, the concrete pad just sat there (Photo 2). My partner got sick of looking at it, and decided to turn it to rubble to get it disposed of (Photo 3). Yes, he’s sledgehammering a concrete pad without shoes on… I gave him shit for it, but I’m not his mother, he’s a grown man, he can make his own dumb decisions. Underneath, we found one layer of brick in the ground and one above ground, and clear evidence of it being a fire pit. We basically went, “Cool! Free fire pit!” And used it as such for about a year. Winter of last year, I came into possession of a LOT of gorgeous luxury stone for free when a local luxury spa business was clearing 20 years of back stock. I got enough to completely reface the chimney, and then a ton of extras to build a nice fire pit. Once I got that fire pit built in spring 2023, we decided to clear out this one and reuse the bricks elsewhere. We got to work removing the layer of bricks above ground, and then set to work digging the charcoal and ashes out so we could remove the other bricks. My partner got to the end of the second layer and found another layer. He went, “huh, cool, more brick”. I said, “haha, what if it’s actually a well?” (Photo 4) He looked up and said, “Don’t you dare even jinx us like that, this house is not allowed to throw something like that at us, too.” (Keep in mind, this is waaaaay before we found the backyard bone pit) Anyway, two MORE layers of brick later I was cackling laughing, and he was rage laughing in utter frustration as we both realized that yes, this was in fact, a well. Well, nothing to do but keep digging. We had found a few modern bottles in the top foot or so, but not much else besides soil. Photo 5 shows about how deep we got before he got in (photo 6) and I took over shoveling for a while while he sifted through soil (Photo 7… contrary to assumption/belief on my last few posts, I’m not a man 😂). Usually I would be doing the digging/investigating, but my partner was REALLY getting excited about it, and he’s not usually big on the renovation work, so I let him do most of the dirty work on this one. It was about this point that we started finding more trash. By more trash, I mean the contents of photos 8 and 9. We found a L O T of trash, and a lot of it was burnt. We found a lot of bottles, children’s toys, what we think was an alarm clock??? (Photos 13 and 14), a gumby toy, paint jars, kitchen china, yard ornaments, angel statues, and…. Bones. Right as we were finding the first few bottles, I FaceTimed my go-to archaeologist and basically said, “Hey what do I do with all of this??? And also what???” She explained that old wells were often used as cheap trash pits, and that’s basically what we had found. We easily confirmed that the bones weren’t human and her assessment was essentially, “keep digging, this is cool” 😂 We stopped at about 6 feet down because it was no longer easily feasible to get in and out safely, and we weren’t sure how stable it would be moving forward, since the soil had started to shift a bit. I called my plumber, who both grew up and then lived as an adult across the street from this house for 40 years. He LOVES coming to my house for calls because they’re always bizarre. He came out, looked at it, and went, “Well, that’s a well.” (Thanks Greg, yes, we knew that…) I asked him what we should do about it, and he got a childlike grin on his face and said, “keep digging, I want to know what’s down there.” 😂 He said that the water table is anywhere from 15-30 feet down, so that’s the point that we would hit water. Once we get that far, he’s going to test the water for us (literally). My city has provisions that allow any house’s water source to be re-plumbed and hooked up to an original well on the property for free if the water is tested and safe. Tbd if I’ll actually do that, if nothing else, we’re very curious. We’ve separated out random broken bottles from stuff we actually want to keep, and we’ve blocked off the top for now with multiple layers of wood for safety. I would love to dig down now, but we’re going to need to hire a professional, and that’s expensive 😬😅 So it’ll happen when it happens. submitted by /u/renovate1of8 to r/centuryhomes [link] [comments]

AITA for shutting down access to my property and lakefront?
Background: I recently purchased several acres of wooded property, a good portion of which juts out into a rather large lake. My little peninsula gives me some great lakefront, there’s a smallish strip of “beach,” a dock and a few boat slips. Because of the woods surrounding the lake, I’m the only lot for several miles that has access to the water without going bushwhacking through the trees. Apparently, over the years my neighbors have gotten used to taking their boats down my driveway to launch, or going and spending time on the beach. I bought the place over the holidays and just recently moved in at the beginning of the summer, and before anyone introduced themselves to me I was met with a regular stream of traffic cutting through my lot to the water. At first I thought it was because I purchased the property and didn’t move in the right away, that everyone just assumed the house and land was vacant and could take advantage until that changed. So, I started walking out when I saw people and letting them know that I lived there now, and also making a point to make it obvious the house was lived in. Not much changed so I got blunt and started asking people directly not to trespass on the property. I wish I could say my direct approach solved the problem, but people would still trek right through. I put up a fence, and put up a sign stating “private property” as well as a sign letting folks know that my dogs were on the property. Once I put the fence up I started allowing them (the dogs) to roam the property and didn’t want any trouble. Unfortunately, my neighbors took the fence and the dogs, despite the fact I owned the dogs well before moving to this lot, as an act of aggression. I had a neighbor come to my door and literally yell at me because my dogs barked at her kids when they tried to pull their raft up onto my beach. That same neighbor advised me that my lot has always been the neighborhood entrance to the lake. Apparently, a number of the neighbors built the fire pit and put the tables and rocks and park like features out there. In chatting with a couple of the friends I’ve managed to make in my new neighborhood, they confirmed that what the neighbor said was true, that my property has always been more of a park than a private lot. Anyway, while I feel bad that the convenience of nearby lake access has been cut off, I live by myself and I’m personally not comfortable with anyone and everyone just traipsing through my yard. On one hand, I feel like it’s absolutely my decision to restrict access to my lot but on the other I’m wondering if I’m breaking some sort of unspoken rule of access that was established before I ever got here. Am I the asshole for closing off my property? ETA: I’m not asking for legal advice, I have a lovely attorney and I’m well within my rights to close down access to the property. There is no easement and I own the shoreline. ETA 2: the neighbors took me letting the dogs out on the property as a sign of aggression, they didn’t literally take my dogs. As the dogs are a pair of Malinois, good luck taking them someplace they don’t want to go. ETA 3: The lake has two public parks, complete with boat launches and docks that are open for anyone’s use. The nearest of which is a few miles down the road from my property. If a person were wanting to launch a boat, it would take about 15 minutes longer to do so by going to the public launch versus down my driveway. ETA 4: I’ll post my more comprehensive plan as an update later as a few people have requested, but this last update is going up to give you guys a thank you for all of your comments and a quick insight as to what’s rattling around in my brain after reading them. I still feel like my decision to shut down access through my yard and driveway is the correct way to do things. If there’s a particular reason my lot should be used, I’ll leave it open to one-on-one discussions. There’s an intercom by the front gate now, I’m going to modify it to a video system that I can respond to from my phone, not just from within the house. As for the waterfront, there’s no fence on the water obviously but there are signs alerting folks to the presence of the dogs. I really took to heart the comments about restricting access to the beach area, and I genuinely don’t like the idea of doing that completely, so I’m working out a plan that will allow boaters to pull up and enjoy the waterfront without compromising my privacy, their or my dogs’ safety. I’m sure some type of landscaping could be devised to make it clear where it’s okay to pull up and have lunch and where my expected privacy begins. Thanks again guys, I’m very glad I was pointed in your direction (even though I think the friend who suggested I post here may actually have been kidding… 😂) submitted by /u/newneighborsucks to r/AmItheAsshole [link] [comments]

Can you not play in your fire pit?
Original post: So I’m camping by myself. Which is not a big deal except that apparently being a small female means that I’m going to die in the campground because there’s no man to help me. But that’s not the point of what I’m about to tell you. I’ve gone camping almost my life so I’m pretty good at making a fire and cooking over said fire. Yesterday I spent hours watching the kids in the cabin next to me play in my fire pit, using it like it’s a sandbox and just having a good time. And because they were so content with the dirt games, I didn’t bother using my fire pit until the evening. But as the evening came, I got hungry so I set about the fire making. I spent a few minutes breaking down a log into kindling and was on the ground creating a tiny wood teepee to set on fire. When I turned to grab my lighter, I saw the kids coming back towards my fire pit. But these kids apparently have some common sense because they saw me tinkering and decided to go to the playground which is right behind their cabin. Everything sounds nice right? Well their mother came over to get her kids from where she thought they would be and saw me feeding my tiny fire. EM: what are my kids? They said they’d be playing in the sandbox! Me: uuuuuuuhhh????? A group of kids just went to the play ground? Does that help? EM: well what are you doing to the sandbox? Me: the fire pit?? I’m getting ready to cook my dinner? EM: could you not do that? They were having so much fun using it. Me: ?????? But I’m hungry? EM: but they’ll get ideas about what they can do. And they might hurt themselves because of you. Me: (staring uncomfortably, waiting for the earth to swallow me whole as I put another piece of wood in the fire) EM: You don’t want that do you? Me: this is my fire pit for the week though sooooo.... EM stomps off to get her children tribe because I’m clearly too dense to know that she’s right and it’ll be my fault when the kids set themselves on fire. After about an hour, I’ve finished my dinner and I’m roasting a marshmallow. And I can feel the stares of the children as I summon the dark magic that is known only as s’mores. When I turned around to acknowledge their existence, their mom glaring at me and sitting at her fire pit with her unaware husband Like I think she was trying to kill me with her mind. But whatever. I sit with my fire until it dies, dump some water in the pit, and sit around for a while more to be sure the fire is out. And go to bed. This morning, kids are up and yelling about sandboxes again. But I had plans to go hiking today so I don’t care what they do. I leave shortly after the day. I shit you not, I just got back to the campground and as I’m putting my backpack away and grabbing a clean shirt, I heard this woman tell her kids that she covered their sandbox so nothing would happen to it. For a moment, I thought this couldn’t possibly mean what I think it means. But no. It 100% does. That damn woman dragged the picnic bench from my site on top of the damn fire pit on my site. She made eye contact with me and went into her stupid cabin. And I guess they aren’t planning on coming back out because they turned off the light in there. I’m not sure what to do about this. Or what to do with all the stuff on the table. Like wtf???? Update the camp manager knocked on my cabin this morning to ask if everything is okay. Idk if she made it into the office to listen the voicemail yet but she saw the table situation and was concerned. I explained to her quietly what was going on. I didn’t know if EM was awake or if she would make a scene so I was basically whispering. I told her about the first incident and how the kids had been playing in the pit all day. She told me I should have reprimanded the children for their behavior. Not my kids to parent though so piss off? But anyway, I told her when I got back from my hike last night, the table was there and I couldn’t move it so I hadn’t been able to make dinner. She asked who’s stuff is on the table Guys, I looked her in the eyes and just shrugged. I told her I don’t know but I was going to take it to the lost and found. So she scooped up the towels and pool toys, and discovered that there was a wallet hidden in the towels. It was, in fact, EM’s stuff. Well she took all of that with her and said she was going to give them a stern talking too. And because I’m not a great morning person, like my brain only works on half a spark when I first wake up, when she asked if there was anything else she needed to know, I almost for to mention the pool. Her response was to ask if the kids were using the showers next to the pool before getting in. Again, not my kids?? She seemed really confused that I’m not related in anyway to these kids. When she left, she said she would call the guy that delivers all the wood to move the table for me. And that’s where we are in life. It’s nine am and I haven’t eaten any substantial since noon yesterday so I’m just going to find a restaurant nearby before I bite someone’s head off. final update Guys I got back from breakfast and they’re gone. The table was moved back. So I went to the front desk to say thank you for moving it for me and the camp manager said they hadn’t got to it yet. Apparently the EM was being so miserable that the husband decided they were going home. So they were busy dealing with EM demanding a refund for the days they weren’t staying, the fact her wallet was “missing” (they gave it to her from lost and found) and the husband was just trying to put her in the car to leave. The camp didn’t even get the chance to talk to them about the fire pit issues. submitted by /u/ShiftingStar to r/entitledparents [link] [comments]
