what's the best fire pit for a 2026 backyard project?
I'm in the final planning stages of a full backyard redesign for this year, and the client (my spouse) has requested a "real gathering spot." A fire pit is the obvious answer, but I need to make a smart choice that fits the design and is built to last. I'm weighing a permanent masonry build against a high-end, prefabricated steel or copper unit. The space is a mixed-material patio (pavers and gravel), so I need to consider heat protection and footing. Aesthetics are important, but so is functionality. enough heat output for cooler evenings and minimal smoke drift toward the house. For the pros and seasoned DIYers here, what materials and styles are you specifying or installing? Is natural gas worth the upfront plumbing cost over propane for a permanent installation? Any specific brands or suppliers you've been impressed with lately for prefab units? Looking for that blend of design integrity and practical, long-term performance. submitted by /u/Automatic_Drop2648 to r/landscaping [link] [comments]

My largest DIY undertaking - first time fire pit + patio seating area build
I put together this project after weeks of research and watching videos. Eventually saw a sale on pavers back in April and pulled the trigger. The project spanned around 2 months working on weekends alongside other home projects, as evidenced by a swing set appearing in between the first and last pictures. I ended up ordering everything from home depot and got most of it delivered. Total pavers used was around 650, and I ordered 750 based on my estimate. I never seemed to have enough sand and made multiple trips to grab more. I cut the pavers using a wet saw from Harbor Freight, and chose the Herringbone design because I thought it would work well with the smaller blade size of the wet saw. The brick pavers were locked into place using Polymeric sand. I was impressed with how solid it felt after 24 hours. The fire pit ring itself has a bit of Loctite around the far edges to just hold the bricks in place. It feels very solid but with enough force a brick could be replaced if needed. I do plan on adding a metal ring for the interior of the pit. It's certainly not perfect, but I am proud of how it came out as a first timer. submitted by /u/Swep1990 to r/DIY [link] [comments]

Wife wanted a smokeless fire pit
When we were building our house I knew I wanted to put a fire pit out overlooking our creek. my wife had asked for me to put a propane fire pit out there and I really just hated the idea of propane out there instead of wood. So I watched an absolute ton of YouTube videos and tried to find as much information as I could about the geometry of the solo stoves and after I had an idea what I wanted, designed a smokeless fire pit. I have a buddy that owns a steel shop and I was able to get the 5/16 plate lasered out and broken for the inner liner, which I then welded together in my shop. I added a removable grate and built a concrete countertop, and luckily my neighbor was able to come over with his tractor to help move it into place because the table top weighed close to 1000 pounds. I wrapped the cinderblock chimney with cedar to make it look like a table and my wife found some Adirondack chairs to finish it off. I got a couple of wine barrel hoops, which I then welded together to make a kindling holder. it actually works really well and there is no smoke when it’s burning good and hot. submitted by /u/GonnaBuyMeAMercury to r/DIY [link] [comments]

Gravel Fire Pit Cons?
https://preview.redd.it/dmmdk5saaevd1.jpg?width=563&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a3e09bb6813b3ca3e3b6de6363d67061aec3d94 My wife likes the gravel fire pit look but I have a few concerns. How much cheaper is it versus pavers? I was quoted $3,500-$5,000 (15-16 ft. circle) wfor pavers and I also spoke to someone else who quoted $3,500 for stamped concrete. From what it looks like, you can use stone gravel for just a few hundred dollars? I am aware of most of the cons such as it can get in your shoes, not suitable for walking barefoot, etc. and most of them don't concern me except for weeds. We live near the NC/SC coast a few miles inland from the beach. So I have few questions... Is it really that much cheaper? Is it as simple as digging down like you would for a paver pit but you just need gravel and no paver base/sand compacted? How bad are the weeds? We have a garden area where in the walking areas we put weed barrier down and covered it in mulch and it turned out to be horrible. The weeds simply grew on top of it. In hindsight I guess I should have used playground wood chips so it wouldn't just disintegrate over time but I'm not sure that would have made a ton of difference with the weeds. Thanks! submitted by /u/richs2k6 to r/landscaping [link] [comments]
