fleskefjes: but you do not lose HA control. I believe you lose the ability to disconnect functionality - i.e. if a switch and a light are grouped the switch will always activates the light where as if you use an automation in HA you can add a condition to break the connection in some cases.

Light Switch suggestions
Hi all, We’re looking for some light switches for our reno - a few will be multi‑gang and many will have dimmers. We’re after something modern and minimalistic in design. Ideally we’d like switches with built‑in dimmers (switch and dimmer, all in one) that are reliable but don’t break the bank. Any recommendations? Thanks! submitted by /u/subalps to r/AusRenovation [link] [comments]

WTF is going on with my light switch?
Can anyone decipher what’s going on here? Single light switch in front room. Controls single pendant light. Switched bulbs recently, they’re not working - they come on VERY faintly (my own fault for buying non dimmer compatible ones - or new bulbs just exposed a wiring issue). I want to get rid of the dimmer switch anyway, so no big deal. But I got a brushed metal one to replace it with, which I think is a no go now. But here’s my problem - there’s 3 live/brown wires. None are sleeved. 2 are twisted and in L2. 1 is hanging loose. And there’s no earth to be seen. There IS a screw in L1. And the loose cable looks like the end of it has been compressed by a screw at some point in its life. There’s no screw in the common connection, so there was never a cable there. My rudimentary understanding is that in the case of a single room switch - the supply in goes to com, the supply out goes to L1. And there’s neither happening here. So I’m genuinely stumped. I either understand less than I think I do, or my house is a big mad bag of spiders. The ONLY possible thing I can come up with is; live supply currently going to L2, twisted and connected com is skipped and left empty because of the bulk that’s gone into L2 L1 SHOULD have the supply to the light but that’s come loose the faint light that’s happening is due to some arcing from the supply (L2) to the loose cable which is causing enough transfer of power to generate some light, but not enough to full engage the bulbs There’s no visible charring or damage to any wires. submitted by /u/JHRFDIY to r/DIYUK [link] [comments]

Smart lights or just smart switch?
I'm replacing some recessed ceiling lights in my kitchen, and I was wondering if someone can recommend going with something like Hue ceiling lights (I already have a bunch of Hue bulbs with Google Home), or just using standard downlights and a smart switch, like an Eve perhaps? The simple lights are much cheaper, but going with them would limit the type of light/colour options I have. The Hue is cool, but maybe 4x the price overall? Anyone else been in similar situations? If so, which way did you go? submitted by /u/Appropriate_Guess614 to r/HomeKit [link] [comments]

Smart home gadgets are a downgrade from a $1 light switch
If your home stops working when the Wi‑Fi hiccups, it isn’t “smart.” I like tech. I work in it, I’ve set up the bulbs, routines, voice assistants, the whole ecosystem. After a couple of years living with it, I’m convinced that for most people, “smart home” is a step backward in reliability, usability, and sanity compared to a dumb switch on the wall. A light switch has near-100% uptime, zero learning curve, and works for guests, kids, and grandparents. A “smart” setup adds latency and friction; you open an app, wait for a handshake, repeat a command, and hope the scene runs. It introduces extra points of failure like cloud outages, vendor sunsets, firmware bugs, and orphaned products. It creates maintenance chores, from re-pairing devices and replacing coin batteries in sensors to debugging automations after an update. It can be hostile to guests; the lamp won’t turn on because the physical switch was flipped “wrong,” or the only control exists on your phone. It also brings lock-in and privacy costs, including data slurping and subscriptions for features that used to be free. There are legitimate use cases. Accessibility needs, leak and CO2 sensors, a smart thermostat with sane local control, timed bathroom fans, and perhaps occupancy sensors in closets or hallways can be genuinely helpful. But most of what’s marketed as “smart” solves problems that a one-dollar hardwired switch, a mechanical timer, or a pull chain already solved permanently. No one talks about resale or longevity either. In seven to ten years, a normal switch still works. Will your cloud-reliant light ecosystem, proprietary hub, and that third app with the purple icon still exist? Or will the next homeowner inherit a house that can’t turn on a light because the company folded? For the usual replies: This isn’t anti‑accessibility. If voice or automation lets you live more independently, it’s a game‑changer. I’m talking about the average, able user replacing dependable controls with fragile ones. It’s also not “no automation ever.” I’m against “everything must be smart.” If it can’t be operated instantly, locally, and manually in the dark by a guest, it’s a downgrade. submitted by /u/Gold_Palpitation8982 to r/unpopularopinion [link] [comments]

Did some deep cleaning yesterday since inspection is on Monday. I was writing down a list of things we need for today and I watched as my mom sprayed cleaner on the switch. Not even five minutes later we hear a pop and all of the lights go out. We hoped it would be ok today but when I flipped the breaker there was a flash pop and lights out again.
