Edit: This is a high-effort, very detailed write up on how to flip patio furniture, intended to give confidence and impart knowledge to the average person who is starting from ground zero. I could have made it shorter and/or lower-effort, but decided to write a 15,000+ word guide instead. If that sounds like something you want to read, this guide is for you: TL;DR: This photo is a screenshot on my laptop that has a good amount of photos from things I've flipped; mostly Patio Furniture, Cars/Wheels, and Portable AC's. I’m a seasonal, full-time flipper in Colorado (same guy who made the Portable AC guide). At the request of many of you, here’s the patio furniture guide that I’ve tried to format in hopefully an equally helpful way. I buy sets that are underpriced and don’t need work, store them outside, take decent pics, and sell them quickly. Most of the money is in sectionals and 6+ person dining sets. The easiest way to lose money is buying damaged sets, the wrong sets, and sets people don’t actually want. Full Post This past winter I made the post on how to flip portable ACs and it blew up. I got a bunch of people thanking me, and then a ton of requests to make the patio furniture version, so here it is. First off, I’m not a “fix-it” guy. I’m a buy it cheap, do almost nothing, and sell it guy. If you’ve never flipped patio furniture before (or never flipped anything before), patio furniture is definitely something you should start flipping because: It’s something that you can often store for free (because you can simply store it outside) You don’t need any special tools/products to flip it (people expect it to be dirty — just leave it dirty) Almost all of it is lightweight and modular, meaning it’s very easy to move by yourself with nothing but your two hands and a truck/trailer/van In-season, demand is strong and supply is high, so as long as you buy right, it’s basically impossible to mess it up There’s a couple easy things you can do to maximize profits, and a couple pitfalls you can easily avoid. I’ll try to outline everything for you here and hopefully completely eliminate the learning curve. Step 1: Know when to do it In Colorado (and most 4-season states), patio furniture season is basically: Mid-March → Mid-September Two big shifts happen every year: Right before school summer break: demand and supply spike Right after kids go back to school: demand drops off Colorado is nice because winter demand/supply basically goes to zero, then spring hits and it feels like everyone suddenly wants to refresh their backyard setup. If you’re in FL/TX/CA, you’ll still see those fluctuations in demand — they’re just going to be smaller because people are outside more year-round. Instead of 100% of people doing it during a 6-month period, you have 70% doing it then and 30% doing it the rest of the year. It makes sense if you think about it. Step 2: Set your rules (and how to identify junk) Here are my rules, and I’d recommend these to anyone starting out: No work: I only buy stuff that doesn’t need repairs (I’ll explain the only exception to that later) If you’re new, just follow those exact rules. They keep this niche profitable and keep it from turning into a part-time job that requires tons of refurbishing expertise and equipment. And because it’s patio furniture, I don’t wash cushions. I don’t wipe things down. I really don’t restore stuff. I just: stage it (usually my back patio / lawn) take good pics write a simple description with dimensions price it to move offer delivery for $ Patio furniture is already outdoor stuff. Buyers expect it to look used, so don’t waste your time trying to make something clean that they don’t care to see clean. Step 3: What “good condition” and “no work” actually means You’ll make the most money by buying stuff that’s clean enough to sell without doing anything to it. Time you spend refurbishing crappy sets is time you’re not locking down and picking up/dropping off actual deals. You should make money when you buy, not based on work you do after you buy. These are my minimum quality standards that will determine if I’m even interested at any price: Wicker sets a couple small, barely noticeable breaks here and there = fine shredded arms / backs / lots of visible damage = pass Metal / wrought iron / steel tiny surface rust / small bends in some metal = fine serious rust that can’t be painted over / broken connections / structural issues = pass Cushions a few small tears on the minority of the cushions = fine big tears / most cushions torn/with holes / missing cushions / severe staining = pass Sling fabric dining chairs fading/stains = fine I obviously prefer things that look good — the better they look, the more I’m interested and the more I’m willing to pay — but a little wear and tear is not a deal breaker as long as it’s actually a little. My threshold is: if the damage is so small that it doesn’t need to be mentioned, we’re good. If the damage is big enough that it’s obvious in the photos / going to have to be addressed in the description, I’ll usually pass. I don’t hide anything. So if the damage is big enough that you feel like you’re having to hide it by not mentioning it, I’d rather pass on it. Those sets just sell for less, take longer to sell, and have an odd amount of picky/high maintenance/lowballing buyers interested in them. Not worth it. Step 4: What to buy A) Patio sectionals (my favorite) These are the easiest money. In good condition, most sectionals sell for $300–$400 all day long, so with my minimum profit margin requirement of $150, I will happily pay $150 for most patio sectionals, and up to $250 for some really nice ones. In GOOD condition, these are what I typically sell/buy these sets for: Wicker sets (the normal 3-wide couch sets with a chaise): $280–$340 Wooden sectionals (usually 6'x6'): $320–$380 Metal sectionals (usually 6'x6'): $350–$420 These are all ranges. If they’re extra big, have extra parts (fire table, matching chairs), have extra-nice cushions (thick Sunbrella ones are the best), all of those things can push the price even higher than those stock ranges. If the set has more wear, mismatched cushions, anything like that, the price can go lower, obviously. Just try to stick to sets that look good and have all their parts to start. What to look for (which sets will sell and which won’t) What moves the price: How it looks (appearance matters more than anything) Size/configuration (sectional layout matters a lot) Cushion thickness (thicker cushions sell faster and sometimes for more) Brand usually doesn’t matter unless it’s clearly premium and very clean. Most buyers can’t tell, and most sets you’re getting for cheap aren’t going to be branded anyway. If I had to rank materials (assuming equal condition): Metal > Wicker > Wood (wood can be great if it looks really nice, but metal and wicker usually move faster) What I pay (simple buy ranges) I don’t have a magic number because it depends how nice it is and what it is, but here’s the easy way to think about it: That being said, I get about 1/3 of my sectional sets for free from people on Marketplace and I pay $50–$150/set for the other 2/3. If you can’t see a clear path to $150 profit without doing work (or even with doing work), just pass. There’s tons of deals out there — you just need to see them when they come in and react immediately. There is one type of outdoor couch that you shouldn’t try to flip early on; I’ll share that down below. B) 6+ person dining sets (my #2) Pretty much the only dining sets I consistently buy are 6-person (or bigger, if I have the opportunity). In GOOD condition, these are what I typically sell/buy these 6-person sets for: Tile sets with the sling/cloth chairs: $240–$280 Wooden sets: $200–$300 Metal sets: $275–$350 Wrought iron sets: $350–$450 Cast aluminum sets: $380–$600 What I pay (beginner-friendly buy ranges) For fabric sets, 1 ripped chair = no deal I’m repeating it because this is a mistake people make all the time: If the sling/fabric chairs are ripped, even one, it’s basically worthless. I wouldn’t pick a set that had a ripped fabric chair for free, so definitely don’t pay for one. You’d be lucky to get $20 out of it and people have them listed for $100+ all the time. Don’t fall for it. Step 5: Hidden wins (not super common, but can be good) These aren’t my main bread and butter, but when you see them cheap, they’re great. 8+ person dining sets If you find a nice 8-person set (metal specifically), those can be big money. I’d pay $250 all day long for a nice 8-person set that looks good because they almost always sell for $500+ when they’re in good shape. Those 8-person square wooden Ikea sets are only worth ~$200 though if they’re in good shape, so don’t pay too much for those. Conversation sets The 2 chairs + loveseat + coffee table setups. These usually sell $120–$250 depending on how cheap/nice they are. Good buys if they’re $0–$50; sometimes I’ll pay a little more if they’re clearly premium. 4 big swivel/rocker chairs (thick cushions) These can be pretty good. They sell $150–$200 pretty consistently if they’re clean with no rips/tears in the cushions. Step 6: Stuff I avoid (even if it looks like a deal) These are my “nope” categories because they waste time and don’t usually sell well: Wavy/dimpled old-school glass tables (people think they look old and they don’t buy them. They sit forever and sell for cheap) Pool lounge chairs Lightweight “restaurant style” wrought iron (skinny, cheap feel) Wicker dining sets (don’t hold up well and don’t sell well in my experience) Step 7: The only time I paint (and what paint to use) 95% of the time I do nothing. But there are two sets where paint is worth it: A) Wrought iron 6-person dining sets (spray satin or matte black) If it’s a solid wrought iron set, I’ll repaint it if it needs it. It only needs it if it’s rusted/peeling/some weird color like green or white. For the thin/mesh stuff: satin looks better. For thicker metal with larger flat areas: matte is more forgiving and still looks clean. Matte black for everything isn’t bad, but satin makes those mesh sets pop a little more. I use Rustoleum 2X stuff, but the stock Home Depot/Lowe’s stuff is pretty much just as good. Those painted sets tend to sell for: Unpainted ones can be stuck in that $150–$250 range, so a coat of paint on these is one of the times I’ll break my “no work” rule. B) Cast aluminum / “basket weave” looking 6-person dining sets Those woven/basket weave cast-looking tables/sets. I hit them with the Behr exterior oil-rubbed bronze metallic spray paint from Home Depot. It’s one of my “secret sauce” things I do to patio sets that squeezes at least a hundred more bucks out per set than painting it black would. The paint costs more (about $10 total per can), but it makes the sets look brand new and super premium. This is the only paint I use on those types of cast aluminum sets because it adds $200+ in resale value and makes them look absolutely awesome. Some paint tips: don’t paint in wind (you’ll waste paint) wear a mask let it sit a full day before selling (cures + doesn’t smell like spray paint when someone comes to buy it) Step 8: How to sell them Selling these sets is typically pretty easy. I’ll break down what I do: Always have dimensions in your description. People have all sorts of different spaces they’re planning on putting your set into, so make sure your description has dimensions. I got a great deal, and I like selling good deals. I find that by selling good deals (even just $20 below market) people tend to be less picky, are less of a headache to deal with, are more open to delivery, and the sets sell SO much faster — which is a big deal for me because I pick up 2–3 sets a day most days, which means I need to sell 2–3 sets a day. You’ll find it’s hard to sell that many sets if you’re greedy. Step 9: Profit The final step is always profit. But in all seriousness, I hope this is very helpful to anyone who’s been asking and to anyone who’s interested in flipping patio furniture and just didn’t feel like they had the right knowledge to do it. Hi! Maybe this is premature, but spring is almost here... I just know it! (I live in the NE US, and it's been a cold, wet, difficult winter.) When I had put our outdoor furniture cushions into storage last November, I noticed they have started to develop mildew in tiny little specks across the cushions. I keep them covered when not in use, but after 4 years of ownership, and especially after a very rainy start to the year in 2025, this wasn't too surprising. Outside gonna do outside things. The issue is that they are "sunbrella" fabric and they say spot clean only. But with the spots I need to clean being scattered all over different parts of most cushions, that will take me forever. (I have a sofa and two chairs). I'd like to try to throw them into the washer 2-3 at a time. Maybe throw some oxiclean in there. What is the worst that could happen in this scenario? I am making new cushions for a client friend's pair of vintage patio chairs. I've patterned out the back and the seat. I have no concerns about crafting the bottom cushion, but the back cushion is a different story. I was told the original cushions (which they no longer have) had vertical stitching that matched up with the vertical rods of the chair. I can see how this would help the cushion conform better to the curved shape of the chair. I'm just not sure the best way to execute this, and would like to hear from others about how they would approach this task. I have two thoughts: probably the easier route would be to use a layer of sewfoam or outdoor equiv to put the stitching in, but that probably won't do much for the overall shaping of the cushion; alternatively, would it make sense to use 2" foam, and (tediously) do 1"-1.5" deep cuts in the back of the foam, and then stitch through the fabric-foam-fabric sandwich. Built this outdoor lounger out of Cedar, 4x4 and 2x12s that I got at a big box store. The two by 12s were marked Cedar, but they did not smell like Cedar. My wife and built the sun loungers out of 2x4 this spring to finally finish the outdoor living room we made last summer. The couch and the loveseat are made of 4 x 4 that we ripped down to 3 x 3 and two by twos. Unseen under the cushions are some reclaimed cedar benches that we used for most of the seating space. The coffee table is a 20 year-old outdoor table for a dining set that were repurposed.
