Hi all! I have this outdoor furniture set I got for free a while ago and I really like it but the seats are starting to come undone. They’re made of some sort of plastic, and the last pic is a chair I have that’s still in great condition for reference. I’m sure whatever my options are won’t be the prettiest but I just want to be able to sit on these without being scared I’m going to drop through them! They have cushions but they don’t have enough support when sitting on the especially broken seats. I’m sure that part of the break down of these seats comes from the previous owner not covering them when they weren’t in use. I’m planning to get or make covers for them in the future. Sharing my most recently completed projects. We had this patio installed so I decided I wanted to furnish it myself. Started the couch in December 2024 and completed it April 2025. Took a break and then started the armchairs December 2025 and finished them at the beginning of May. Walnut frame and hard maple slats. My first try to make anything with elastic, and used it on the seat cushions based on a YouTube video I found. I’ve made pillow cases before but not the envelope type, and found another YouTube video to help with that. The material was a blanket I ordered online that was a much different green background than anticipated, so it never got any use, so I thought this would be a good way to make something washable, as we have animals that like to jump up on the furniture. I’ve got an outdoor table + chair set and a fitted cover that’s less than a year old, but it already looks like it’s having a rough time. It’s winter at the moment (UK), cushions are stored indoors, and the cover is on mainly to protect from rain. As you can see in the pic, water pools on top and the fabric is sagging a lot. My questions: • Are you actually supposed to keep covers on outdoor furniture over winter? • Is water pooling like this expected, or does it mean the cover/setup is wrong? • Should I be propping it up for runoff, loosening it for airflow, or ditching the cover altogether until spring? I was thinking of maybe putting a large rectangle of corrugated plastic underneath, to stop water pooling, maybe at an angle so its runs off? Feels mad that a “weatherproof” cover wouldn’t even last a year, so wondering if this is user error or just standard cover quality these days. Hey folks, my husband and I are in the market for some outdoor furniture. We've got a large covered patio so we're looking for a sofa/sectional, lounge chairs, coffee table, and a dining set. We already have a fire pit, but that isn't under the patio and we need chairs for that, too. I've read that teak and aluminum are great for the frame, sunbrella is the go-to for cushions and Polywood seems to be a good brand. But I would love to hear what you have (store/brand) that's lasted during the summers here. We are buy-it-for-life kind of people so we are happy to spend money for quality. I recently sold a set of West Elm patio furniture (sofa, chair, coffee table) on FB Marketplace. I purchased for almost $3500 a few years back, and sold for a little over $1k. The set was listed for $2k and someone offered $1200. No rips in the cushions, the set was in great condition for being outdoor furniture with normal wear and tear. The buyer sent her husband who arrived solo, inspected the set, and I helped him cram it into his van. I’m shocked everything fit, but glad it did so he didn’t have to take two trips. He later texts me that the cushions have a rip, which he later admitted it was probably his kids fault from moving out of the van, and is disappointed in the quality of the “worn” cushions. He keeps texting me to call West Elm to see what I can do to help them. Question - do I owe them anything? What would you do in this situation? Do I just block him? Payment cleared already. He unfortunately has my address? Has anyone dealt with this? I bought a home about 6 months ago and recently moved in. The people who rented the house before moved out the country and left the cat behind, as the neighbors promised they’d care for the cat. He comes by often, at first I wouldn’t feed or give him water because I assumed he was cared for (certainly looks it, chunky boy). I’ve recently been leaving him food and water out and he’s around more. He spends time with my partner and I when we hang outside. I let him tour the house when we first moved in so he can make sure old owners aren’t hiding from him. He likes to sink his claws into our outdoor furniture, a stern “no” set him straight. Hi everyone. About a year ago, I rescued a kitten from a field. He was probably around 3–4 months old at the time. From day one, he was extremely fearful—he wouldn’t approach, wouldn’t eat treats, didn’t respond to toys, and would hiss or run away if we got even remotely close. After living with us for about 5 months, he was diagnosed with FIP and had to stay at a vet clinic for nearly 3 months for treatment. (getting him to vet everyday for 90 day was an impossible task, because we can't even get close to him, yet alone putting him in a box.) He recovered well physically, but the long hospitalization likely set back any social progress. Since coming back, he’s been living in a safe, quiet room with access to a closed terrace. He has a cat tree, toys, a private litter box, and consistent food/water. We’ve tried a lot to help him feel safe: – calming diffusers (currently using Pet Remedy) – fixed daily routines – soft talking and zero forced interaction – full autonomy and no cornering – patience, lots of it Despite this, nothing has really changed. He still hides constantly—either under the bed or on top of tall furniture. If we enter the room and he sees us, he bolts instantly. He won’t let anyone get close, hasn’t shown any interest in play, and hasn’t allowed physical contact even once. He usually uses the litter box, but every 2–3 days he still poops or pees on soft surfaces like blankets or mops. We’ve removed bedding to minimize this, but it still happens when he finds soft alternatives. I’ve also tried occasionally letting one of our calm, friendly cats into his room (supervised), hoping he might observe and learn, but there’s been no progress there either—he just hides. We’re not trying to push him, but after all this time and effort, it’s hard not to feel discouraged. And now we might need to move into a smaller apartment soon. He’s not a candidate for outdoor life, and I don’t know how to continue supporting him if we can’t offer a separate room anymore. Has anyone else dealt with a cat like this? For context, I live in a slightly odd apartment complex that's literally right next to a hospital. Our driveway and the hospital drive way are less than five inches apart. The units are all ground level and have patios in the front (sectioned off by fences). My unit is the closest to the parking lot as well as the street, and has one of the largest patios. They are technically converted medical offices, but it's pretty clear that they're currently apartments. Like, I have well-loved furniture and fairy lights on my patio. I've been doing a seven day week for the last few months, getting up early and coming home late. I finally quit my job and have been spending more time at home. Imagine my fucking surprise when I was woken up on Saturday to voices outside my unit. They sounded weirdly close, and fairly loud. I was going to ignore it, but, like, it was 9am and I'd wanted to sleep longer. Went outside to check it out, and there were two women sitting at my outdoor dining set, coffee in hand, yapping it up. Bro. After asking them what the ever loving fuck they thought they were doing, it turns out they've been doing this for at least two months while their friend is in the hospital. They claimed they didn't know this wasn't part of the hospital. One of the women at least had the decency to seem apologetic, but still. You're full ass trespassing. It could not be more clear this is a residential area. I'm fucking confounded. Been internally screaming the entire week since I found out, but just need to vent into the void while I process. It feels so freaking violating. (And before anyone asks about my neighbors: I know the person right next to me leaves early for her job, and the person next to them runs a sunrise yoga class on the weekends; the rest of my neighbors are in a different building, and I've never met most of them.). Edit: Three quick notes about things being up in the comments a lot and I don't want to spend time replying to all these comments lol. +Re: trespassing - In my county, trespassing is treated pretty severely, regardless of intent. Dunno why, but I think it's because of mixed zoning. So, yes, entering private property uninvited is trespassing. Even if it wasn't like this: colloquial use exists lol. +Make a sign/install cameras/mild vandalism: I'll be installing cameras, and I've contacted my property manager. She said she'll be bringing this concern to the city. +You didn't notice for two months, it's not a big deal: I've just spent six months only going to my apartment to sleep. College + hour changes at work meant I was basically gone from 6 or 7 am to 9 or 10 at night each day of the week, minus Sundays, when I'd be able to get home at 4. I recently bought a house and have been having some work done before I move in. It was empty on the market for about 6 or 8 months before I bought it. One morning I got a call from my contractor, asking me about moving the cars in the driveway, and of course I had no idea what he was talking about. I hadn't moved in yet. I left my jobsite and drove nearly a half hour to get there. As soon as I arrived, the people on the east side of me were walking toward the cars. I asked if they were their cars and they said yes. They told me that they had been parking there for a few months with permission from the owners. I informed them that I was the new owner and they can't park there any longer. We went back and forth, and with the intention of being a good neighbor and trying to show some good will, I agreed to allow them to park there for a few more weeks until I move in; with the agreement that they would move them by 6 am every morning. The rest of the week went by without incident. The contractor called me about scheduling a walk thru on Saturday, and we set a time for early afternoon. When I arrived, there were 4 cars in the driveway, and nowhere to park. (the only on-street parking is 2 blocks away.) I called them and asked them to move their vehicles- reminding them of our agreement. After 20 minutes, they finally came out and moved them. Speaking with them, they claimed to have misunderstood and thought out agreement only referred to weekdays and not weekends. I corrected them and moved on. Sunday morning, I grabbed a trailer and loaded some furniture to take over and store in the garage. Once again, there were cars in the driveway. I called them and got VM. I texted and said they had until a tow truck could arrive, to get them moved. No answer. I called a tow company. 45 minutes later, 2 tow trucks showed up, backed in and hooked up to the cars. All of the sudden, the neighbors were home. They ran out to stop their cars from being towed, and it ended up costing them a little over $300 to get them unhooked. I called my contractor and asked if he knew someone who could put in a driveway gate, and he did. I let the neighbors know that they could no longer use my driveway. On Wednesday, I get a call from the gate installer, telling me that there are cars in the driveway. I called them and said tow trucks are on the way. They moved. The gate was installed and I went by to pick up the opener that evening. The neighbor husband came out to confront me, and I opted to just call the PD, and deal with it legally. That Saturday, I went by to accept an outdoor furniture delivery, and check on things when i noticed a towel beside the pool and a small kids flotation device. My initial thought was that I just hadn't noticed it before, so I wrote it off and threw them both in the trash. On Saturday, the movers arrived with everything and we began moving things in. About 7pm, my daughter and I left to go grab some dinner, arriving back at the house around 930 pm. The neighbors were in my pool. They were hanging out and using my furniture. When I opened the door and began raising hell, they told the kids to go to the house and the children ran to a corner of our fence and just walked through. They had cut out the privacy fence so it could be removed and had been using the pool at their leisure for who knows how long. Again, I called the police and filed a complaint. The dad was arrested for trespassing, DPP, and an outstanding warrant, and the oldest boy (20M) for an outstanding warrant. I replaced the fence with a new one, because they had destroyed the posts, runners and pickets by removing and reinstalling the panel. Small claims awarded me the total cost of 83' of 8' privacy fence, which came out to $3,800. The following Monday morning around 5am, their cars were parked in the street, where there's no street parking, so I made a phone call. They were gone when I left at 7am. I haven't been paid yet, but I did notice a For Rent sign in their yard this morning, so that's just as good. Good riddance. EDIT/UPDATE: 1.For those of you suggesting a security system: one was installed that next week, along with 6 cameras around the house, a ring doorbell, and a fence around the pool itself to keep the dogs and my grandson out of it. I'll be closing and covering the pool in the next few weeks. Met the owner of the house yesterday evening. The house will be empty by the end of the week. They were evicted for non-payment of rent - likely due to tow charges, and the husband not working because he was incarcerated - where he remains. Warrant was for back child support. Wife apologized and claimed that she was told they had permission to use the pool (they didn't) The material for the fence was purchased through my company account. I'm a structural engineer and commercial construction manager for a large local GC. Only 2 posts had to be replaced and a hand full of runners. The rest was just 8' 1"x 6 " 1/2" pressure treated pickets, which cost me $2.60 per stick, X 210 pickets purchased. The rest was labor and fasteners. So, altogether - about $900 for material and stain. $150 for a dumpster, and the rest went toward labor to finish it on a weekend. Fun fact: I'm also a property investor/flipper. Been in construction (commercial, civil, industrial and residential) for 35 years. Not my first fence, nor my first asshole neighbor. Before the paint experts jump on board: I know how long I have to wait before pressure washing and staining the fence. The petty was only my twisting the knife by having their cars towed from the street, when they weren't affecting me at all. TLDR: Neighbors at new house used my driveway, and destroyed my backyard fence to use the pool. Sued them and won. The title doesn't paint me in the best light but please hear me out. My ex husband and I split about three years ago. We have both since found new partners and are quite happily co parenting our two children. Milo who is 17 and Jason who is 14. Milo is essentially blind. He is completely blind in one eye and does not have a great deal of vision in the other. We have done what we can to support him and cater to his needs, he is a very confident and outgoing boy despite all of this and it brings me a great deal of comfort knowing that he is happy. Everything was going absolutely perfect until a few weeks ago. My ex's partner,who we'll be referring to as Mary, has a habit of getting involved in situations that do not concern her. She frequently tries to take over as "mother" when my boys are staying at their dad's house. She makes a point of butting into calls to talk to my boys and when Milo was was 15 she went out of her way to buy him the Harry Potter books in braille. She knew that this was our thing, we'd curl up on the sofa and I'd read the books to him. Well, a while ago she decided to stick her nose in and suggested that Milo get a guide dog. He doesn't really go out on his own, he is always accompanied by a friend of family member. He was very sold on the idea and has started looking into applying for one as his GP apparently agrees with Mary. I am not a fan of this idea. Milo is perfectly capable of navigating his way around the house and he always has someone with him when he's outdoors, I just don't see why he'd need a guide dog. I also admit that I am a bit of a clean freak and like everything to be sitting tidy. That's just not possible with a dog, I am not having my home being covered in dog hair and having the furniture chewed up and jumped on. The boys begged for a cat for ages and the cat hair is bad enough. I am also not a big fan of dogs, I was bitten as a child and ever since I have always been a bit wary of them. We had a disagreement about it yesterday and I snapped, telling Milo that he can get a dog if he wants but he is not living under my roof with it. By all means if he'd moved out and got a dog then I wouldn't see any issues with it but he is adamant that this is what he wants, knowing full well I don't want the house to turn into an absolute pig sty. He has been informed that under no circumstances does he bring that animal into my home, he can visit as much as he likes without it and I will of course visit him but the dog can't live in my home. His dad and Mary, of course, have taken his side. Jason has tried to talk to his brother but Milo seems dead set on this idea and not thinks I'm an asshole for not allowing a dog in the house. AITA in this situation? ETA I am NOT infantilizing my son. What does it matter if i referred to him as my baby? I do the same with Jason. They are my children and they always will be, no matter how old they are. Parents of reddit will understand this. I am sick to death of all of the comments accusing me of this. I know Milo is almost 18, I did give birth to him. I want Milo to be independent but that's a lot of unnecessary stress to put on him right now. And no, I am not bitter about Mary. No, she is not abusive, I never said she was. I just don't like her waltzing into our lives and trying to take over the role of mother. If Milo wants something, for example an item of clothing, and I cannot get it straight away, Mary will go out of her way to get it first. When my husband told her that Milo likes singing, she decided to have a karaoke night with him. Anything she can do to make herself look good she will, the guide dog suggestion was no exception. If it means that much to Milo and his independence he can get the dog. Something about hundreds of people telling you that you are a colossal asshole will do that to you. I took the suggestion and did some research regarding guide dogs and I do not feel as strongly about having one in the house now that I know how well behaved they are. A little intro, and why I'm writing this. I'm /u/Thopterthallid. You might remember I wrote a similar introductory guide for Hyrule Warriors as well as one for Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Maybe you've never heard of me and don't give a damn. As a short introduction, I was an aspiring writer and journalist who due to some mental health issues, bad timing, and bad luck never made it into a career. When I wrote that introductory explanation of Hyrule Warriors a couple years back, it received a ton of love and really rekindled my love of analysis, writing, and droning on about stuff that I like. I suspect that a huge percentage of people on this sub have either already played Animal Crossing, or just have no interest in it. This guide is more for the people who just haven't had the chance to really look and see what the game is about. With that, thank you for taking the time to check this out. I hope you find my post helpful, amusing, educational, or just a good way to kill some time. So just what is Animal Crossing? What makes it different from other life sim games like Stardew Valley, or Harvest Moon? The first Animal Crossing game that released in the west was simply titled 'Animal Crossing' for the Gamecube. It was a near identical port of a Japanese N64 game called Animal Forest, though with some added features. At the time, the whole "Life Sim" genre wasn't nearly as popular as it was today. The Sims had just released a year prior on PC, and Harvest Moon was the only other game remotely similar. Animal Crossing brought two very unique ideas to the mix. The Real-Time Clock, and the virtual absence of any sort of consequences, penalties, game over screens, enemies, combat, or drama. The series has taken the same formula since it's beginning. Your character, the only human in the game, has moved into a town of animals. Unfortunately, you're flat broke. However, a raccoon named Tom Nook sells you a house for virtually no money down and has you pay off an interest free loan. The gameplay is mostly just talking to the animals that live in your village, running errands, planting flowers, catching fish and insects, and eventually working towards paying off your loan and upgrading your house. There's no enemies to fight, no game over screens, and nothing at stake. It's just a casual life sim that's oozing with Nintendo charm, soft relaxing music, and colourful characters that millions of players around the world have fallen in love with. How does the clock work? In Animal Crossing, the in game clock is the same as the one hanging on your wall. When an hour passes in real life, an hour passes in the game. In the short term, the time of day you choose to play the game affects what events occur in the game. If you turn the game on at midnight, certain shops might be closed, but it's the perfect time to catch nocturnal fish or animals. On a larger scale, different events and holidays occur on different dates which yield chances for large cash payouts, rare furniture sets, or other unique bonuses. I want to stress that there's no in-game method to manipulate time. You can't play the Song Time to return to the dawn of the first day, you can't sleep in a bed to warp to the next day, and you can't fast forward or slow down time. By that alone, I think you can start to see the differences between Animal Crossing and other life sim games such as Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, or The Sims. You said the game has no consequences? I did, and that's both true and not true. Let me explain: In games like The Sims, your Sim can die from performing dangerous actions. In Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon, you can lose a lot of money if you don't care for your farms. In Animal Crossing, for a game that's entirely surrounded around the passage of time, there's no time limits. Nook will never harass you about your debts, getting stung by bees or bitten by mosquitoes only delays you a little and gives you a puffy face, you won't starve, you won't lose money as a punishment for anything, and nothing you build can be destroyed. So, while the Sims may be slightly more realistic about giving you a genuine life simulation, Animal Crossing lets you live out an idyllic, fantasy life that lets you escape from a while from the hustle and bustle of real life. It's true that you can lose a bit of money by planting fruit trees in the wrong spots, or by letting turnips spoil by not selling them in time, and once in a while you might get bit by a spider or stung by a bee, but beyond that there's no "video gamey" type game overs or penalties. What do you do in Animal Crossing? Animal Crossing is very much a "do whatever you want game". There's no enemies to attack you, so you can just park your character next to the ocean and listen to the waves and soft music. As for actual mechanics though, here's a little list to give you an idea: Fishing and catching bugs. Upgrading, and decorating the interior and exterior of your home. Talking to Animals, and performing short quests for them, such as giving them a certain item, catching them a certain bug or fish, helping them find a lost item, or just making deliveries between them. Designing pixel art patterns for use in clothing, flags, furniture, and more. Simple errands, such as picking weeds, planting flowers, or paying off your debt to unlock more upgrades. Collecting seashells. Digging up and identifying fossils to sell or display in a museum. Collecting furniture, wallpaper, and carpets. Playing in special holiday events. Visiting other players' towns to trade and compare towns. Some Animal Crossing games had a different area you could travel to that had new features. Animal Crossing had a deserted island with a single villager living on it, and second home to decorate, City Folk had a big city with tons of shops and new features, New Leaf had a tropical resort where you could meet and play with strangers over the internet, and New Horizons will have procedurally generated untouched islands with special items to find. New Leaf added the ability to build large scale outdoor structures such as fountains, bridges, and new shops. In short, the "goal" of Animal Crossing has always been: You're dropped into a somewhat procedurally generated town. You pay off debts by selling items to unlock new features and upgrades. You do it all at your own pace. It can take months, if not years to see and experience everything. So what's different about New Horizons? New Horizons is the biggest departure for the series (if you don't include spinoff games). In classic Animal Crossing, you're dropped off in an established town. Other villagers already live there, and there's already shops. You're a resident in a town, but it's not really your town. In the past, you've occasionally had the opportunity to decide where certain structures go, and in New Leaf you've had more control than ever being the mayor. New Horizons however, you start in a completely empty deserted island along with two other random villagers. You'll decide where people set up tents that will eventually become their houses, you'll decide who gets to move in and when, and you'll even be able to shape the landscape to create rivers, cliffs, and waterfalls. On top of that, there's a full crafting system which is new for the series. Collecting resources and building your own furniture will be an important part of the game. I suspect that watching the recent Nintendo Direct will do the best at showing you all the new features. Will I like New Horizons? That's the million dollar question isn't it? Everyone I've ever known who's tried Animal Crossing has liked it. Now, that doesn't mean it was everyone's favorite game, but they saw the appeal after giving it a try and many of them went on to buy it. Some of them fell so deeply in love with the series that it was all they played for months. Play Animal Crossing New Horizons if: You enjoy cute, wholesome games. There's little to no sadness going on here. It's just a game about living on a peaceful island with animal friends. You enjoy a bit of a grind. You need money in this game to progress through the upgrades. None of these upgrades are game-changing, but they give you a larger house, or a second floor, or allow you to build structures like bridges and shops. That said, just about everything you do in the game translates to making money. You want to enjoy a game for a long time. Animal Crossing is the opposite of a game you enjoy for a week and move on. It's about the passage of time, and watching things grow. This is the kind of game for people who want to play a game for months, if not years. You're looking for something absolutely stress free. Animal Crossing is one of the most zen, and peaceful games you will ever find. It just makes you happy when you're playing it. You want a game that's going to be supported with free updates for years. You get excited seeing rare fish or bugs. Consider avoiding Animal Crossing if: You're looking for a game you can complete in a week and move on. This isn't a 10-20 hour adventure game. This game doesn't ask you to binge it for long hours into the night, but it does want you to be playing it fairly regularly over a long period of time. The people that get the most out of Animal Crossing are the ones able to play it multiple times a week, and can maintain that pattern for months. Animals notice when you haven't played in a while, and weeds slowly begin to take over your town the longer you're away. Nothing terrible is going to happen if you don't play for a long time, but the game isn't subtle about pointing out you haven't played in a few weeks. You're looking for a game with a narrative. Animal Crossing has no story beyond the story you make for yourself. Chatting with villagers isn't going to unravel secrets of their past, there's no great mystery to be solved, and you certainly aren't going to save the world. Talking to villagers is just chatting about life, offering wisdom, telling jokes, and just making friends. The only secrets and mysteries in the town are the ones you discover organically while playing. And while you aren't going to save the world, you can certainly make this little slice of the world your own. You're looking for something action-heavy or exciting. Animal Crossing is about peace and zen, and the closest thing to a stressful moment are aggressive insects and spiders who will try to bite you or sting you if you attempt to catch them. Even then, the only punishment is your character makes a pouty face for a while and you'll lose your target. What else?
