Above Ground Pool Feedback
Hi Above Ground Pool Group, I have a few questions for anyone interested in sharing their experiences. Do you ever regret your above ground pool and wish you bought an in-ground style? Do you ever miss having a shallow end? I see most of the pools are 48" but there aren't any steps or a shallower area to just sit in the water. What do you do during the winter? I live in Idaho, we do have occasional snow and freezing temperatures. How often do you change the water completely? What is the overall impact of your utility bill? How much ground prep did you do in advance? How often have you had to buy a new pump and accessories (ladder, cover, liner). At what capacity do you feel crowded in the pool? If you have to drain the pool what do you do with all the water? What size is your pool and why do you like the size you have? What are common issues or any issues that you have had and found costly and/or frustrating? Comments, responses, and suggestions are truly appreciated, thank you. submitted by /u/Naive-Apple-1012 to r/AboveGroundPools [link] [comments]

Best place to sell Above Ground Intex Pool
Bought a 16’ Intex last summer. Getting a permanent pool installed in two weeks so I don’t need the Intex anymore. Perfect condition, plus I have a second filter and a second frame both in amazing condition (the second filter and frame were given to me by a friend). I’m having trouble selling it. I’ve tried Facebook market place, Offer Up and Next Door. I bought it for $750 brand new, asking $450 for the pool and everything that was included in the original box. Selling the second filter and some other accessories I won’t need separately. Not getting any bites. But I can’t go any lower than I’m already asking. Any suggestions? Above ground pool
My family is wanting to get an above ground pool and not spend a fortune. We found one we liked, but it is only the pool with no pump/accessories. What would I need to buy separately? Obviously a pump, but we’re new to this so we have no clue. What brands are best/more reliable? Also, like I said we’re not trying to spend a ton of money so trying to avoid pouring a concrete pad if possible. Are there any alternatives other than a concrete pad to put the pool on? Or can we just put it on level ground? submitted by /u/estapleton22 to r/swimmingpools [link] [comments]

Chaos Zero Nightmare: What if Morimens was made by gooners. 10days review
So! After Stella Sora nuked community trust last week, how did Smilegate new opera hold up to expectations?? Let's run the rubric! As a baseline, I'm currently level 44 in game and level 31 in chaos zero, giving me access to basically all of the content. Moreover, I'm not a baseless czn hater calling into cause Morimens without having played it, as I have played the game since Hameln release. Aequor ftw (Morimens x Limbus when?) Overview CZN is a turn-based card battler roguelike where you bring 3 characters and... groans record your build at the end of each run so you can use that recording to clear other content. Yes, I love roguelikes. Yes, I'm completely absolutely fed up with every gacha and their mother going the UmaMusume way of forcing you into spamming the roguelike mode to clear anything. To boil down the issue, I like trying my characters in ever-changing challenging levels and dungeons. I don't like being forced in multiple hour-long sessions (due to rng) roguelike-crawling in order to make a character usable, on top of the usual material and relic grind. We'll talk much much more in deep about this later in the gameplay section. Launcher Now, a little note has to be made about CZN launcher. CZN does not have a standalone launcher, instead it has to be installed through Stove launcher, just as Epic Seven. Stove launcher is... horrible. One of the worst launchers out there. Reroll Do not attempt rerolling. Every account is pigeonholed in a long tutorial before being allowed to roll. Moreover, the reliance on Stove launcher forces to spam create new Stove accounts. Finally, the initial pulls burst is big enough you won't have to rely on rerolling to get most stuff. That said... god have mercy if you keep missing necessary 4*s for teambuilding... Gacha and Pull income These are both... fine? Pity at 70, 50/50 on character banner, 100% on signature weapon banner, softpity starting at 58 and works like Arknights buildup pity. New characters are added to standard-pool after the rate-up banner ends. Now, one small praise for CZN. Despite every pull costing 160 currency, most content awards in multiples of 20-30-50-80-100, and very few things only give 5 currency (like affinity levels). Truly, a round of applause to CZN for not falling in the hoyoverse reward-scheme. Income-wise, without rerolling and as f2p and getting to soft-pity everytime, I hit 6-7 pities so far and I'm still not completely dried up, unlike Stella Sora. Also, 2nd round of applause to CZN for quite the amusing feature. Through a f2p-only banner (no way to buy more of this secondary currency), you can roll items to change some character cards from static and plain to glossy and animated. It gives quite the flair. Now, there is one tiny issue and that's with the "weapon banner". To put it bluntly, characters>>>>>>>"weapons" in this game, and since rate-up weapon banner is 100%... you are basically locked from getting any of the permanent 5* unless you wanna burn permapulls in the standard weapon banner instead of character banner. Character Pool The game has 11 5* and 11 4*. Now, here's the thing: everyone will tell you "Oh ye CZN is the first game in a while where 4*s are actually useful and needed for teams!". And yes, that is true. Especially for Mika, one glance at Prydwen team-guides and you'll see her on every single team... despite needing 2 different teams for endgame but anyway. This is all true... for now. I have, absolutely, no doubt that 4*s will be yeeted into the sun as soon as more 5*s come out. It's the natural circle of life. Character Building This is an absolute headache... Allow me to quote Prydwen regarding the lack of Chaos Manifestation tier-list: "Chaos Zero Nightmare is a game with absurd freedom and the ability to allow any character to shine. Given enough time, persistence, correct teams, and dedication to deck building, all characters can work and clear Chaos mode currently." Now... you must understand that if it's true that any character can be good with good rng and deckbuilding... the opposite is also true, where EVERY character is hot garbage without proper building and a mountain of rng. Let's go by sections: CZN characters have roguelike-tied aspects and general aspects when it comes to building. For general aspects, we have Memory Fragments (Relics, same as hsr, except no planar. 6 slots, you can activate a 4piece bonus and a 2piece bonus of any set), Potential (Traits), Partner (Summon Weapons). These are all things that can be farmed and set in stone outside of the roguelike mode. Yes, relics are WAYYYYY much less of an hassle than... what's to come. Onto the roguelike part, every character can drop a random weapon, armor and accessory, all with unique passives, that are going to be saved at run end. These come in Rare-Legendary-Mythic, you can only equip 1 Mythic per character and you cannot swap it with another Mythic even if you drop it in the same slot. Mythic equipments can only be dropped from specific event-tiles or special encounters. Lemme be blunt: ...most of these items are bad. Some of them are game-warping, like Water Drops allowing you to save leftover Mana from the 1st to 2nd turn every fight. Trying to ""optimise"" these item drops is going to be hell, especially if for whatever reason you are gunning for specific Mythic equips. Now... onto the main meal. The deckbuilding. This is going to be hell. So, every character at the start of the run has 4 basic cards. During fights, a character may get an Epiphany. Basically, one of the cards in the deck shines and if you play it you either generate one of the 4 Unique cards each character has, add it permanently to your deck and a copy in hand for 0mana or you automatically trigger the epiphany at the end of the turn. ...now. If your character already has unlocked most of their unique cards during their run, instead of unlocking a new one it will permanently mutate. When mutating, you can pick one between 3 out of 5 possible pre-planned mutations per card. These are the meat of the deckbuilding. Some of these mutations are absolutely ridiculous and needed to make a character work, while some can ruin it. Here some examples: Orlea is a character based around generating summons with 0cost and having free effects from playing/keeping the cards generated. One of the cards, Sacred Censer, has a possible mutation that when played, grants you for the rest of the fight from the first turn a free created card. This is also the only card in the deck that automatically and 100% allows you to generate cards. Hugo is a fua dps that gains fua stacks whenever other characters use non-attack cards. The card allowing him to do this, Hunting instincts, has only one out of five mutations that don't remove the Outbreak of war effect from it (Basically it makes it so it's the first card drawn at the start of the fight.) If you "mutate it" wrong, Hugo can't generate fua stacks without draw rng. So, each character has a possible 8 cards deck, out of which 5 can get epiphany mutations... But it gets more complicated. Through events or shop tiles, you can add to your deck Neutral cards. There are 43 Neutral cards, each with also 5 possible epiphanies (I think so, nobody has an archive of these. Might be only 3 for neutral cards.). MOREOVER, you can also remove cards from your deck, including basic and unique cards. FINALLY, some events can also let you duplicate cards in your deck. ALSO, when beating some mini-bossed you may get monster cards that are pretty good, them too with epiphanies of their own. Complicated yet? We are not done. When triggering a mutation epiphany, you might get a Divine epiphany. Basically, one of the 3 options gets an EXTRA bonus on top of the regular mutation, and these can get busted very very quick. They can give you guaranteed break bar hits, make a card cost less, free draws, free buffs, literally so much and there's no way to predict em, aside specific event that guarantee you'll get one from a specific God. So we are done right? NOPE ENTERING DATACAP. Depending on how hard the dungeon you beat is, you'll be allocated a datacap value that goes from low to very high. How it works is that the game tries to save your deckbuild as much as possible before hitting the datacap. It then removes/nerf randomly the deck you constructed to fit the size, without giving you any indication or numeric value. You might lose some mutations, you might lose entire cards, basic cards may be re-added to your deck if you removed too many of them. Etc. So, to get "the best" character you have to: -get good items -get good Epiphanies -pray you get divine epiphanies on the normal epiphanies you already want -pray you get busted monster cards -get a lot of tiles letting you remove and duplicate cards -fight the datacap RNG ALL AT ONCE This is, so overwhelming, such an rng mess from a mode that can take an hour per run, that currently there is no proper guide out there about how to deckbuild. Not in global, not in jp. The worst part is, as shown above, a lot of this rng affects character functionality A LOT. And you WILL have to do this circus every single time you get a new character you want to build. The only mercy CZN gives us is the fact builds are tied to each character instead of teams, unlike Stella Sora. Progression Progression is ehhhhhh. Like, it definitely has bad aspects, like character XP farming being miserable and needing multiple days worth of stamina to level up characters at higher uncaps. Or potentials asking quite a bit of skill materials. But between the hellish rng grind and the abundance of content, you won't "feel" the pressure from account progression grind. One funny note though: The game has Growth Guide quests (Clear quests to get lots of prizes.) and so far the community has been gatekept from progressing em by one specific quest. Affinity level up quests. You need to level up a character affinity to level 5/10/15. This is... hard, especially due to the lack of Affinity gifts farmable. Players complained to the point the director is sending daily enough gifts to do one affinity level per day. Some of the progress IS heavily timegated in the form of ArkCity. Basically every X amount of time you can interact with policies in it to gain currency to trade with a material that is used to level up a skill tree giving you extra buffs, like the ability to reroll dice rolls inside of the roguelike mode. Combat system I already info-dumped all my gripes about the roguelike grind above, so I will take this section to talk about my gripes with endgame and hard-fights designs. In the roguelike mode, a major factore that can lead to losing is Stress level. Whenever a turn pass or you take damage, a random character gains stress. When fully stressed, they go in panic mode. Under panic mode, all their cards are switched to panic cards and your max hp is reduced by a third. To get out of panic mode, you have to play enough panic cards. Simple enough? Okay. Basically every miniboss/hard enemy has a deck-foddering/card debuff mechanic: Shock cards, Burn cards, Freezing your card, sending your cards into the void, cost increase etc... See a pattern? Lemme make it more clear with one extra info: endgame clears are based on clearing the level under a certain number of turns. So... the entire game was designed around the philosophy of "Make player unable to play=Hard difficulty". The best example of this is the 7th level of Basin (Permanent MoC) On the 2nd half, you have 2 waves having 1 miniboss each. This enemy puts 3 Burn cards in your deck per turn that don't disappear unless played, cost 1 mana each AND eat up your draws per turn (Btw you only get 3 mana per turn :) ). MOREOVER, the boss also freezes some cards in the deck each turn. This for 2 whopping waves. I hate, with all my heart, the philosophy behind how this level was designed. There is also A MASSIVE detach between the deck needed to actually finish your roguelike mode and the deck needed for endgame, as the former requires lots of survivability and heals, and the latter requires a full dps deck. Content The game has little but VERY fleshed out content. There are: -5 main story chapters with a story dungeon each -5 battle chapters with normal and hard difficulty (60+ stages without counting the secret stages unlocked from city mode.) -5 chaos mode dungeons with different difficulty toggles and level up mechanics (the more you run a dungeon, the more it levels up giving you rewards and items/buffs appearing in the run pool) -chaos zero with its own level up system and mechanics, allowing you to get permanent buffs when running it -Basin of Hyperspace (Moc) -Trauma mode (Side-stories focused on individual characters) There is a looottt of stuff to unlock and level up, and everything feels properly rewarding at least for now. Monetization Nothing of note to report. All the classics are here: battlepass, welkin, beginner bundles etc etc. Same as hsr, nothing to report. Dramas Oh, this is a fun one. As avid KR gachagames players will know, you can't say KR gacha without mentioning the small pp gang, the hand-sign of the beast. So, what did the most ego-frail community get hurt by this time? This time... they are almost in the right? Mainly, the main character is a ghost inside the story, a true cameraman. The interactions between the characters and him are basically non-existent while the ones between characters and npcs are abundant. ...now onto the demented part of the KR complaints, Owen NTR. Owen is one of the starter free characters and a man... due to the lack of MC presence and him being close to his teammates... yeah you can see where this is going. Moreover, the KR version apparently had some "censoring" in the script making it sound less MC-loving overall. Moving onto extra prove-able drama (I won't be speaking of the alleged writer insider info etc.), AI usage. Some of the assets, despite not showing evident AI usage, do have an "AI Essence", like legs having completely off joints. Finally, as further evidence, we have translation using AI. Despite nobody bringing this up, it is obvious the english translation uses a chatgpt-base for its translation. Why do I know this despite the game or devs not saying anything about this? Because it has the same identical issues Morimens had during the chatgpt-only translation period. Where keywords would constantly change despite being the same. (Celestial/Heaven, Store/Save) etc. So, how did the director respond to all of this? ...He folded like a wet blanket. He apologised profusely for all the issues, denied AI usage at all, announced rewriting the story chapters from the ground again, removing character interactions that don't include the MC from the game and basically sending Owen into the sun. Yes, he's trying to pull a Snowbreak.... All of this, on top of future character designs being goonerfest bait... yea we can all see where they are gonna try and cater... The Competition Everyone trying to criticise CZN loves to bring up Morimens as direct competitor without specifying what Morimens does better. SO! LET'S RAPIDFIRE THIS: -CHARACTERS ELEMENTS ACTUALLY HAVING A FACTION IDENTITY AND PURPOSE INSTEAD OF BEING JUST ELEMENTAL ADVANTAGE -NO HAVING TO GRIND ROGUELIKE TO MAKE CHARACTERS WORK -ENDGAME HAVING ADJUSTABLE DIFFICULTY AND ALLOWING DIFFERENT STRATEGIES OTHER THAN DPS RUSH -CHARACTERS' KITS BEING MUCH MUCH MORE VARIED -ENEMIES BEING BALANCED AROUND LONG FIGHTS AND ASKING FOR SURVIVABILITY -FIRST 3 DUPES BEING MORE IMPACTFUL (albeit CZN dupes are better if maxxing) -LOWER PITY AND HIGHER PULL INCOME -STANDARDISED PVP (Everyone has the same powerlevel, no whaling through) -THE HORNIEST CHARACTER CHAPTER, Thai's Chapter, BEING THE BEST WRITTEN CHAPTER IN GACHA HISTORY DESPITE THE PREMISE BEING "Oh we must copulate to survive" AND SO MUCH MORE! Conclusion We are FINALLY at the end of this review. The game has definitely its strenght points... for a little bit. Smilegate history, the KR community, the hsrslop endgame design, the rng inferno, the character design of some characters being goonerbait and the director having the fortitude of a plastic fork definitely detract from the experience but HOPEFULLY the game may be able to survive/improve.... Please don't go the Snowbreak route, I beg you. Also yes, do give Morimens a spin if you like the gameplay but want to avoid the goonersphere. Thank you for the read! submitted by /u/gugali123 to r/gachagaming [link] [comments]

Also yes, do give Morimens a spin if you like the gameplay but want to avoid the goonersphere. best "seasonal" above ground pool and accessories?
Hi there, my latest inflatable pool just sprung a leak AGAIN and I've decided to buy one of these soft sided pools you can take down in the winter (i'm in upstate NY). It's primarily for my 6 year old and I can't go bigger than 10' round. It will be on a paver patio and I will use a thick ground cloth. I'm a bit overwhelmed by everything out there and would appreciate any recs. I'm primarily looking at the Intex easy set and the intex 28201EH metal frame - they're roughly the same price so I just don't know what the differences/pros/cons are. Also, I know I will need to upgrade the filter to a sand filter, but wondering if there are any recs for that as well, b/c literally every sand filter on Amazon has terrible reviews. Many thanks in advance! submitted by /u/empathie_00 to r/AboveGroundPools [link] [comments]

Above Ground Swimming Pool Steps: Your Gateway to Pool Perfection
Let's be real – climbing into your above ground pool shouldn't feel like conquering Everest. Yet here you are, doing some weird gymnastics routine just to take a dip. Above ground swimming pool steps aren't just accessories; they're the difference between graceful pool entry and looking like you're auditioning for America's Funniest Home Videos. The right pool steps transform your swimming experience from "precarious adventure" to "smooth operator." We're talking safety, style, and that effortless vibe that makes your neighbors wonder how you make everything look so easy. Because nothing says "I've got my life together" like not struggling to get into your own pool. Time to upgrade from whatever makeshift solution you've been using. Here's everything you need to know about choosing above ground swimming pool steps that actually work with your lifestyle. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Types of Above Ground Swimming Pool Steps A-Frame Pool Steps A-frame steps are the classic choice – two-sided access that works from inside and outside your pool. Think of them as the Swiss Army knife of pool steps: versatile, reliable, and they get the job done without any drama. These steps typically feature 3-4 steps on each side with a platform at the top. The design distributes weight evenly, making them stable enough for adults and safe enough for kids. Plus, they look intentional – like you actually planned your pool setup instead of just winging it. The beauty of A-frame steps? They work with any pool height and don't require permanent installation. Move your pool? Move your steps. It's that simple. In-Pool Steps In-pool steps mount directly to your pool wall and extend into the water. They're sleek, space-saving, and give your setup that built-in look without the built-in price tag. These are perfect if you're working with limited deck space or want to maximize your swimming area. Most in-pool steps feature wide, textured treads for safety and handrails for stability. They typically accommodate pools from 48 to 54 inches tall, though some adjustable models work with various heights. The installation is straightforward – no power tools required, just some basic assembly skills. Above Ground Pool Ladders Pool ladders are the minimalist approach – straight up functionality without the bulk. They're typically lighter, more affordable, and easier to remove when you want maximum pool space. Think of them as the sports car option: efficient, streamlined, and purpose-built. Most ladders feature removable sections, so you can take away the outside portion for added security. It's like having a drawbridge for your pool – keep the unwanted swimmers out while maintaining easy access for yourself. Wedding Cake Steps Wedding cake steps (also called tiered steps) offer the ultimate in luxury and accessibility. Multiple wide steps create a gradual, comfortable entry that's perfect for older adults, kids, or anyone who prefers taking their time getting in the water. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 These steps often include side handrails and non-slip surfaces on every tread. They're wider than traditional steps, providing more room to sit and relax. It's like having poolside seating built right into your entry system. Materials That Matter: What Your Steps Are Made Of Resin Construction Resin steps dominate the market for good reason – they're lightweight, weather-resistant, and won't rust, corrode, or fade. Modern resin construction rivals traditional materials in durability while being easier to move and maintain. Quality resin steps feature UV protection that prevents that chalky, sun-bleached look that screams "I bought the cheapest option." Look for steps with reinforced stress points and thick-wall construction. Your steps should feel solid, not flimsy. Heavy-Duty Plastic Don't confuse heavy-duty plastic with cheap plastic. Premium polymer construction offers excellent strength-to-weight ratios and superior chemical resistance. These steps can handle pool chemicals, UV exposure, and temperature extremes without breaking down. The key is in the details – reinforced joints, textured surfaces for grip, and integrated handrails that won't snap off when you actually need them. Quality plastic steps often last longer than their metal counterparts. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Metal Framework Some premium steps combine resin treads with powder-coated metal frameworks. This hybrid approach delivers maximum strength while maintaining corrosion resistance. The metal provides structural integrity while resin components handle chemical exposure. Look for stainless steel hardware and aluminum or steel frames with quality powder coating. Cheap metal steps rust faster than your college dorm shower, so invest in proper corrosion protection. Composite Materials High-end composite steps blend multiple materials for optimal performance. These might combine fiberglass reinforcement with resin bodies or aluminum frames with composite treads. The result? Steps that perform like premium equipment while looking effortlessly stylish. Sizing Your Above Ground Swimming Pool Steps Pool Height Compatibility Your pool's wall height determines which steps will work. Standard above ground pools come in 48", 52", and 54" heights, and your steps need to match. Too short, and you're still climbing. Too tall, and you're wasting money on steps you don't need. Most quality step systems accommodate multiple pool heights through adjustable designs or interchangeable components. Check the manufacturer's compatibility chart – don't guess and hope for the best. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Step Width Considerations Wider steps mean more stability and comfort, but they also take up more pool real estate. Standard step widths range from 24" to 36", with some luxury models going even wider. Consider your pool size and available space when choosing width. If you've got a smaller pool, ultra-wide steps might overwhelm the space. For larger pools, narrow steps can look proportionally small and less substantial. Weight Capacity Don't overlook weight ratings – they matter more than you might think. Quality steps should handle 300+ pounds without flexing or feeling unstable. If multiple people might use the steps simultaneously, look for even higher weight ratings. Remember, wet conditions reduce traction and increase slip risk. Steps that feel solid when dry should still feel secure when wet and loaded with your full body weight. Safety Features You Actually Need Non-Slip Surfaces Textured step treads aren't optional – they're essential. Smooth surfaces become ice rinks when wet, turning your pool entry into a liability nightmare. Look for deep texturing or integrated grip patterns that won't wear smooth over time. Some premium steps feature removable grip tape or replaceable tread inserts. This lets you refresh the grip surface as needed without replacing entire steps. Safety Feature Importance What to Look For Non-slip treads Critical Deep texture, raised patterns Handrails High Secure mounting, comfortable grip Wide steps High Minimum 7" depth per step Weight capacity Critical 300+ lbs minimum rating Stability Critical Anti-tip design, wide base Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Handrail Design Handrails should be comfortable to grip and positioned where you naturally want to hold them. The best handrails follow the angle of the steps, providing support throughout your entry and exit. Avoid steps where handrails feel like an afterthought. Look for handrails with comfortable diameter – too thin feels unstable, too thick is hard to grip securely. Quality handrails also feature smooth finishes without sharp edges or rough spots. Anti-Tip Features Stability matters more than style when you're dealing with water and elevation changes. Quality steps feature wide bases, low centers of gravity, and design elements that prevent tipping even under uneven loading. Some steps include anchor points for additional security, though most well-designed steps shouldn't need anchoring for normal use. If your steps feel tippy without anchors, you probably need better steps. Installation: Easier Than You Think Tool-Free Assembly The best above ground swimming pool steps assemble without tools or with just basic hand tools. If installation requires a workshop full of equipment, you're probably looking at the wrong product. Quality engineering makes assembly straightforward and intuitive. Look for systems with clear instructions, labeled parts, and logical assembly sequences. If the instruction manual looks like it was written in another language and badly translated, keep shopping. Deck Integration Options Consider how your steps will integrate with existing decking or future deck plans. Some steps work better with decks, others are designed for ground-level installation. Planning ahead prevents compatibility issues later. If you're planning a deck addition, choose steps that won't interfere with construction or look awkward with the finished deck. Sometimes spending a bit more on versatile steps saves money long-term. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Seasonal Considerations Think about winter storage and seasonal setup. Some steps break down for easy storage, others are designed to stay in place year-round. If you close your pool seasonally, easy disassembly becomes a valuable feature. Weather-resistant construction matters if you leave steps outside during off-season. UV protection, freeze-thaw resistance, and corrosion protection become critical for year-round outdoor storage. Maintenance: Keeping Your Steps Step-Ready Regular Cleaning Pool steps accumulate the same chemicals, debris, and algae as your pool, but they're easier to neglect during routine maintenance. Regular brushing and chemical cleaning keep steps safe and attractive. Use pool-safe cleaners that won't damage step materials or affect pool chemistry. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can remove texture from non-slip surfaces – you need that grip for safety. Chemical Compatibility Pool chemicals can be harsh on step materials, especially lower-quality plastics and metals. Choose steps rated for standard pool chemical exposure, and follow manufacturer guidelines for chemical compatibility. Shock treatments and high chlorine levels can accelerate aging in some materials. If you frequently run high chemical levels, invest in steps designed for heavy chemical exposure. Seasonal Storage Proper off-season storage extends step life significantly. Clean steps thoroughly before storage, ensure they're completely dry, and store in a protected area away from UV exposure and temperature extremes. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Some step components are more vulnerable than others. Handrails, hardware, and moving parts need extra attention during storage preparation. A little prevention beats expensive replacement later. Budget Breakdown: What You're Really Paying For Entry-Level Options ($100-$200) Basic steps get you in and out of the pool safely, but don't expect luxury features or premium materials. These typically feature simple construction, limited adjustability, and basic safety features. They work, but they're not winning any style awards. Entry-level steps are fine for occasional use or budget-conscious buyers, but consider long-term value. Cheap steps that need replacement in two years aren't actually saving money. Mid-Range Excellence ($200-$400) This sweet spot delivers quality construction, safety features, and reasonable durability without breaking the bank. Mid-range steps typically feature better materials, more thoughtful design, and additional safety elements like improved handrails. Most pool owners find mid-range steps offer the best balance of features, quality, and value. You get steps that look intentional and perform reliably without paying for premium features you might not need. Premium Performance ($400+) High-end steps justify their cost through superior materials, advanced safety features, and construction quality that lasts decades rather than years. Premium steps often include features like wider treads, better ergonomics, and materials designed for commercial use. If your pool is a significant lifestyle investment, premium steps make sense. They complement higher-end pools and provide the reliability and safety you expect from quality equipment. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Common Mistakes That Cost Money Wrong Size Selection Buying steps without measuring your pool height is like buying shoes without knowing your size – technically possible, but probably disappointing. Measure twice, buy once, and save yourself the return hassle. Don't assume all "above ground pool steps" fit all above ground pools. Pool heights vary, and steps need to match your specific setup for safety and functionality. Ignoring Weight Ratings Weight ratings aren't suggestions – they're engineering limits. Exceeding weight limits risks step failure, injury, and warranty voidance. If you need higher capacity, buy steps rated for higher loads. Consider dynamic loading too. Getting in and out of pools creates forces higher than static weight, especially if you're moving quickly or carrying items. Skipping Safety Features Saving money by choosing steps without handrails, non-slip surfaces, or adequate stability is penny-wise and pound-foolish. Pool safety isn't negotiable, and good steps pay for themselves by preventing accidents. The cost difference between basic steps and safety-equipped steps is minimal compared to medical bills or liability issues from preventable accidents. Maximizing Your Above Ground Swimming Pool Steps Investment Proper Installation Even the best steps perform poorly if installed incorrectly. Follow manufacturer instructions exactly, and don't take shortcuts on assembly or positioning. Proper installation ensures safety, performance, and warranty coverage. Take time to level steps properly and ensure all connections are secure. Loose hardware creates safety hazards and accelerates wear on step components. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Routine Inspections Regular inspections catch problems before they become safety hazards. Check hardware tightness, inspect for cracks or damage, and verify that safety features remain functional. A monthly inspection takes five minutes but prevents bigger problems. Pay special attention to high-stress areas like handrail connections, step joints, and any moving parts. These areas typically show wear first and need attention before failure occurs. Upgrade Timing Know when to upgrade rather than repair. Steps showing significant wear, damage, or safety concerns need replacement, not patch jobs. Your safety is worth more than trying to squeeze extra life from compromised equipment. Modern steps offer better safety features, materials, and design than older models. Sometimes upgrading delivers enough improvement to justify the cost even if old steps still function. The Bottom Line: Steps That Step Up Your Pool Game Above ground swimming pool steps aren't just functional equipment – they're the difference between a pool that feels like a luxury amenity and one that feels like an obstacle course. The right steps provide safe, comfortable access while complementing your pool's overall aesthetic. Quality steps represent a small investment compared to your pool itself, but they dramatically impact your daily pool experience. Whether you choose basic functionality or premium features, prioritize safety, proper sizing, and materials that match your climate and usage patterns. Don't settle for sketchy entry methods or steps that make you nervous every time you use them. Your pool should be a source of relaxation and enjoyment, not anxiety about safe entry and exit. Invest in steps that match your pool's quality and your safety expectations. The best above ground swimming pool steps are the ones you don't think about – they just work, look good, and let you focus on enjoying your pool rather than navigating it. That's worth every penny you'll spend on getting them right the first time. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 submitted by /u/elia_74 to r/bestabovegroundpools [link] [comments]

Above Ground Swimming Pool Solar Heaters: Your Ticket to Year-Round Pool Paradise
You've got that shiny above ground pool sitting in your backyard, but there's one problem – it's colder than your ex's heart most of the season. Enter above ground swimming pool solar heaters, the game-changing tech that'll turn your pool from "polar plunge" to "tropical escape" without sending your electric bill into orbit. Here's the deal: solar pool heaters aren't just some eco-warrior fantasy. They're legit money-savers that can extend your swimming season by months while keeping your wallet happy. Think of them as your pool's personal trainer – they work hard so you can play harder. What Are Above Ground Swimming Pool Solar Heaters? Above ground swimming pool solar heaters are systems that harness the sun's energy to warm your pool water. Simple concept, brilliant execution. These systems pump your pool water through solar collectors (usually black panels or tubes) where the sun does its magic, then send that toasty water back to your pool. It's like giving your pool a warm hug from Mother Nature herself. No gas bills, no electric meter spinning like a slot machine – just pure solar power doing the heavy lifting. The beauty? They work with your existing pool pump, so you're not rebuilding your entire setup. Just add solar panels and boom – you're swimming in luxury. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Types of Solar Heaters for Above Ground Pools Glazed Solar Collectors These are the luxury sedans of solar pool heaters. Glazed collectors feature tempered glass covers and insulated frames, making them perfect for year-round use in cooler climates. They're pricier upfront but deliver consistent performance when temperatures drop. Think of them as your pool's winter coat – they trap heat better and work harder when the going gets tough. If you're in a climate where "summer" lasts about three weeks, glazed collectors are your best bet. Unglazed Solar Collectors The workhorses of the solar heating world. These systems use UV-resistant rubber or plastic materials without glass covers, making them lighter on your wallet and perfect for warmer climates. They're like that reliable friend who shows up every time – maybe not fancy, but they get the job done. Unglazed systems excel during swimming season (late spring through early fall) and are way easier to install. Plus, they won't make your HOA lose their minds over "unsightly equipment." Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Solar Pool Covers and Rings Don't sleep on these simple solutions. Solar covers and floating rings aren't full heating systems, but they're the perfect wingman for your main heater. They trap heat during the day and prevent it from escaping at night. It's like putting a lid on your coffee – basic physics working in your favor. Bonus: they also reduce evaporation, so you're not constantly topping off your pool. Why Above Ground Swimming Pool Solar Heaters Are a Smart Investment Money in Your Pocket Here's where things get interesting. Once installed, solar heaters cost virtually nothing to operate. We're talking about cutting your pool heating costs by 50-85% compared to gas or electric heaters. That's not chump change – that's "extra vacation fund" money. Your traditional pool heater is like dating someone high-maintenance – expensive, demanding, and constantly asking for more. Solar heaters? They're the low-maintenance partner who still brings the heat. Eco-Friendly Flex Going solar isn't just about saving money (though that's nice). You're reducing your carbon footprint while enjoying your pool paradise. It's the ultimate win-win – you get to swim guilt-free while your neighbors are still burning through fossil fuels. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Extended Swimming Season The right solar heating system can add 2-4 months to your swimming season. That means more pool parties, more late-night swims, and more time showing off your pool to friends who are still dealing with ice-cold water. Choosing the Right Solar Heater for Your Setup Size Matters (Really) Your solar collector area should be 50-100% of your pool's surface area. Got a 24-foot round pool? You'll need roughly 450-900 square feet of collector area. It sounds like a lot, but remember – bigger collectors mean warmer water and longer swimming seasons. Don't go cheap here. Undersized systems are like trying to fill a bathtub with a garden hose – technically possible, but painfully slow. Consider Your Climate Living in Phoenix? Unglazed collectors will handle your needs perfectly. Dealing with Minnesota winters? Glazed systems are your best friend. Match your heater to your climate, not your budget dreams. Think about it this way: you wouldn't wear flip-flops in a blizzard, so don't install the wrong solar heater for your weather. Pool Usage Patterns Are you a weekend warrior or a daily swimmer? Heavy usage means you need more heating power. If you're hosting pool parties every weekend, invest in a robust system that can keep up with demand. Installation: DIY or Call the Pros? The DIY Route Installing unglazed solar collectors isn't rocket science, but it's not exactly IKEA furniture either. You'll need basic plumbing skills, a decent tool collection, and the patience of a saint. Most systems come with detailed instructions, but "detailed" doesn't always mean "easy." Pro tip: If you've successfully installed a garbage disposal without flooding your kitchen, you can probably handle a basic solar heater installation. Professional Installation Sometimes it's worth paying the pros. Complex roof installations, electrical work for automatic controllers, or dealing with tricky plumbing configurations – these situations call for expertise you probably don't have. Think of it as insurance. Sure, you could perform surgery on yourself, but why risk it when professionals exist? Maintenance: Keeping Your System Running Smooth Regular Cleaning Solar collectors need periodic cleaning to maintain efficiency. Dust, leaves, and bird... contributions can reduce performance. A simple hose-down every few months keeps things running at peak performance. It's like washing your car – not strictly necessary for function, but it sure makes a difference in performance and appearance. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Winterization If you live where water freezes, you'll need to drain your system before winter. Frozen water in solar collectors is like putting a soda can in the freezer – it expands and breaks things you'd rather not replace. Most systems include bypass valves that make winterization straightforward. Just don't forget to do it – expensive lesson learned the hard way by many pool owners. Component Checks Inspect your system annually for loose connections, damaged panels, or worn seals. Catching small problems early prevents major headaches later. It's preventive maintenance 101 – like changing your car's oil before the engine seizes. Cost Breakdown: What You're Really Looking At System Type Initial Cost Annual Operating Cost Payback Period Unglazed Solar $3,000-$4,000 $0-$50 3-7 years Glazed Solar $4,000-$6,000 $0-$100 4-8 years Gas Heater $1,500-$2,500 $500-$1,200 N/A (ongoing costs) Electric Heat Pump $2,500-$4,500 $300-$800 N/A (ongoing costs) The numbers don't lie – solar systems pay for themselves through energy savings. After the payback period, you're basically swimming for free (energy-wise). Financing Options Many solar installers offer financing packages that let you start saving immediately. Monthly payments often cost less than what you'd spend on traditional heating, making it a no-brainer financially. Maximizing Your Solar Heater's Performance Timing Is Everything Run your solar heater during peak sun hours (10 AM to 4 PM) for maximum efficiency. It's like charging your phone – works better when the power source is strong. Set up automatic timers so your system runs when the sun's doing its best work. Smart controllers can even adjust operation based on weather conditions. Circulation Strategy Slow water flow through collectors maximizes heat transfer. Think of it like steeping tea – rushing the process gets you weaker results. Your pool pump's variable speed settings are perfect for optimizing circulation. Combine Technologies Pair your solar heater with a pool cover for maximum efficiency. The solar heater warms the water, the cover keeps it warm. It's like wearing a sweater and a jacket – layered protection against heat loss. Common Mistakes to Avoid Undersizing Your System Going too small to save money upfront is like buying shoes two sizes too small – technically they'll work, but you'll regret it every time you use them. Size your system properly from the start. Ignoring Shade Issues Solar collectors need direct sunlight to work effectively. Installing panels in shaded areas is like trying to get a tan under an umbrella – technically possible, but pretty inefficient. Skipping Professional Assessment Every pool setup is different. Professional assessment ensures you get the right system for your specific situation. It's worth the consultation fee to avoid expensive mistakes. Check details : https://amzn.to/447tcl6 Future-Proofing Your Investment Smart Controls Modern solar pool heaters can integrate with smart home systems, letting you control heating remotely and optimize performance automatically. It's like having a pool manager who never takes vacation days. System Expandability Choose systems that allow future expansion. Starting with a smaller setup and adding collectors later can spread costs over time while ensuring you get exactly the performance you need. Warranty Considerations Quality solar heaters come with substantial warranties – often 10+ years on collectors and 5+ years on components. Don't compromise on warranty coverage to save a few bucks upfront. The Bottom Line: Why Solar Makes Sense Above ground swimming pool solar heaters represent the sweet spot between performance, cost, and environmental responsibility. They're not just pool accessories – they're investments in extended swimming seasons, reduced operating costs, and guilt-free luxury. The technology has matured beyond early adopter experiments into reliable, efficient systems that deliver real value. Whether you're looking to cut costs, extend your swimming season, or reduce your environmental impact, solar pool heating checks all the boxes. Ready to transform your above ground pool from seasonal novelty to year-round oasis? Start with a professional assessment, size your system properly, and prepare to enjoy swimming without the sticker shock of traditional heating bills. Your future self – the one doing cannonballs in October – will thank you for making the switch to solar. Because the best pool is the one you can actually afford to heat. Above Ground Swimming Pool: Your Backyard's Ultimate Flex
Here's the thing about above ground swimming pools – they're not your dad's inflatable kiddie pool from the '90s. We're talking serious backyard upgrades that'll have your neighbors doing double-takes and your summer parties hitting different levels. You're probably thinking about adding some serious cool to your outdoor space, and an above ground swimming pool might just be your secret weapon. No massive construction crews, no permits that take forever, and definitely no second mortgage required. Just pure, refreshing luxury that you can actually afford. Let's dive into everything you need to know about making this happen. Check the best swimming pool: https://amzn.to/447tCl6 Why Above Ground Pools Are Having Their Main Character Moment The above ground swimming pool game has completely transformed. These aren't the flimsy, temporary setups you remember. Today's models blend style with substance, giving you that resort vibe without the resort price tag. Here's what's driving the trend: flexibility meets functionality. You can relocate if needed, upgrade without major renovations, and enjoy premium features that rival in-ground installations. Plus, installation happens in days, not months. The aesthetic game has leveled up too. Modern above ground pools come in sleek designs that complement contemporary outdoor spaces. Think clean lines, sophisticated materials, and finishes that actually enhance your property value. Check the best swimming pool: https://amzn.to/447tCl6 Types of Above Ground Swimming Pools That Actually Matter Steel Frame Pools The workhorses of the above ground pool world. Steel frame pools offer serious durability with galvanized steel walls that resist rust and corrosion. They're built to handle whatever weather throws at them and typically last 15-20 years with proper care. These pools handle deeper water better than other types, making them perfect for actual swimming rather than just splashing around. The structural integrity means you can add features like ladders, decking, and even heating systems. Resin Frame Pools Consider these the luxury option. Resin pools resist corrosion better than steel and maintain their appearance longer. They're pricier upfront but require less maintenance over time, making them a smart long-term investment. The resin construction also insulates better, keeping your water temperature more stable. If you're planning to use your pool year-round or live in an area with temperature swings, resin makes sense. Hybrid Pools Best of both worlds – steel structural components with resin top rails and hardware. You get the strength of steel where it matters most and the longevity of resin where it shows. Hybrid pools balance cost and performance effectively. They're sturdy enough for serious use but won't break the bank like full resin systems. The Real Cost Breakdown (No BS Numbers) Let's talk money – because pretending cost doesn't matter is ridiculous. Pool Type Initial Cost Annual Maintenance 10-Year Total Steel Frame (18' round) $800-$2,500 $300-$500 $3,800-$7,500 Resin Frame (18' round) $1,500-$4,000 $200-$400 $3,500-$8,000 Hybrid (18' round) $1,200-$3,200 $250-$450 $3,700-$7,700 These numbers include the pool, basic filtration, and standard accessories. Add $500-$1,500 for professional installation, depending on your site preparation needs. Don't forget the extras that make it actually usable: quality pump and filter systems ($200-$800), pool chemicals for the season ($100-$300), and basic maintenance equipment ($100-$200). Insurance might bump your homeowner's premium by $50-$100 annually. Most insurers treat above ground pools as personal property rather than permanent structures, keeping costs reasonable. Check the best swimming pool: https://amzn.to/447tCl6 Installation: DIY vs Professional (The Truth) DIY Installation You can absolutely handle this yourself if you're reasonably handy and have a weekend to spare. Most above ground swimming pool kits include detailed instructions, and there are countless YouTube tutorials walking through every step. The key is site preparation. You need level ground – and we mean actually level, not "looks pretty close" level. A few inches off creates structural problems that'll haunt you later. Budget 1-2 days for a basic round pool, 2-3 days for oval or larger installations. Having 2-3 people makes the process significantly easier, especially when handling the liner and filling. Professional Installation Worth every penny if you're not confident with the site prep or don't have the time. Professionals know exactly how to handle drainage, ground preparation, and local regulations. They'll also warranty their work, giving you peace of mind that everything's done correctly. Plus, many pool retailers offer installation packages that bundle everything together at a discount. The cost difference usually comes down to $500-$1,500, which isn't massive considering the potential headaches you're avoiding. Maintenance Made Simple (Because Nobody Has Time for Pool Drama) Maintaining an above ground swimming pool isn't rocket science, but consistency matters. Here's the routine that actually works: Daily (30 seconds): Quick visual check for debris, animals, or anything obviously wrong. Weekly (30 minutes): Test water chemistry, add chemicals as needed, skim surface debris, and empty skimmer baskets. Monthly (2 hours): Brush walls, vacuum bottom, clean filter, inspect equipment, and shock the water. Seasonally: Deep clean everything, winterize if needed, and inspect for wear or damage. The chemistry is straightforward: maintain pH between 7.2-7.6, chlorine at 1-3 ppm, and alkalinity at 80-120 ppm. Test strips make this foolproof – just dip, compare colors, and adjust accordingly. Invest in a quality automatic pool cleaner ($200-$600) and your maintenance time drops significantly. These units handle daily cleaning while you focus on water chemistry and equipment checks. Styling Your Above Ground Pool Area (Make It Look Intentional) This is where above ground pools either look amazing or scream "temporary setup." The difference is in the details. Decking Changes Everything Build a deck around your pool – even a simple platform deck transforms the entire look. You can use composite materials that match your home's exterior or go with natural wood for a more organic feel. Partial decking works too. Create a small platform on one side for easy entry/exit and place your pool equipment underneath for a cleaner appearance. Landscaping Integration Plant strategically around the pool area. Tall grasses or bamboo create privacy screens, while flowering plants add color and visual interest. Just avoid anything that drops leaves or debris into the water. Consider the sight lines from your house and neighbors. Strategic plantings can create a more private, resort-like atmosphere without building expensive fencing. Lighting for Ambiance LED pool lights, string lights, or landscape lighting extend your pool's usable hours and create serious ambiance for evening entertaining. Solar-powered options eliminate electrical work and provide eco-friendly illumination. Underwater LED lights specifically designed for above ground pools add that premium touch. Check the best swimming pool: https://amzn.to/447tCl6 Common Mistakes That'll Ruin Your Pool Experience Skipping Site Preparation Rushing the ground prep is the biggest mistake people make. Uneven ground causes structural stress, premature wear, and potential catastrophic failure. Take the time to get it right. Undersizing the Filtration System The filter system that comes with budget pool kits is often inadequate for the pool size. Upgrading to a properly sized pump and filter prevents water quality issues and reduces maintenance headaches. Ignoring Local Regulations Some areas have setback requirements, fencing regulations, or permit requirements even for above ground pools. Check with your city before installation to avoid expensive corrections later. Buying on Price Alone The cheapest above ground swimming pool option usually costs more long-term through repairs, replacements, and frustration. Invest in quality components that'll last. Poor Water Chemistry Management Inconsistent chemical maintenance ruins pool surfaces, creates health hazards, and leads to expensive repairs. Establish a routine and stick to it. Seasonal Considerations (Year-Round vs Summer-Only Use) Warm Climate Advantages If you're in a climate where swimming season extends beyond summer, above ground pools make even more sense. The relatively low operating costs mean you can enjoy your investment more months per year. Consider adding a pool heater ($500-$2,000) to extend your season. Heat pumps work efficiently in moderate climates, while gas heaters provide quick heating in any weather. Cold Climate Winterization Proper winterization protects your investment during freezing months. This involves lowering water levels, adding winterizing chemicals, covering the pool, and sometimes disassembling components. Many people opt for professional winterization ($200-$400) to ensure everything's done correctly. The cost is minimal compared to replacing damaged equipment or liner. Making the Investment Decision An above ground swimming pool represents serious value for families who'll actually use it. The key is honest assessment – will you really swim regularly, or will this become an expensive lawn ornament? Consider your lifestyle, available time for maintenance, and long-term plans. If you're planning to move within a few years, the portability of above ground pools becomes a major advantage. The break-even point compared to community pool memberships or regular vacation costs usually hits around year two for active users. After that, you're enjoying pure savings while building family memories in your own backyard. Check the best swimming pool: https://amzn.to/447tCl6 Your Next Move Above ground swimming pools have earned their place as legitimate backyard upgrades. They offer flexibility, affordability, and immediate gratification that in-ground installations can't match. The technology and design have evolved to where you're not compromising on quality or aesthetics. You're choosing smart value over unnecessary complexity. Ready to make summers at your place the neighborhood destination? Start with your space assessment, research local regulations, and begin shopping for the features that matter most to your situation. The water's fine – time to dive in. submitted by /u/elia_74 to r/bestabovegroundpools [link] [comments]

Bestway Pool - above ground measurements
Hi, I'm considering buying a bestway above ground pool but it will stay in a large brick greenhouse. Does anyone know the extact measurements including the metal frame/legs that stick out past the pool. This is the pool I'm considering. https://www.madfun.co.uk/intex-18ft-x-9ft-x-52-ultra-xtr-frame-rectangular-above-ground-swimming-pool-with-sand-filter-pump-and-accessories-26356b submitted by /u/MartonAndyK to r/AboveGroundPools [link] [comments]

Wearing Power Armor to a Magic School (91/?)
First | Previous | Next Patreon | Official Subreddit | Series Wiki | Royal Road “Error: Unrecognized Command. Please specify—” “Disable FROM-1 presets, EVI.” I interjected, my eyes narrowing towards the track in front of me, and the unrendered obstacles that stood in the way between here… and well… here. “Acknowledged. Alert! FROM-1 [FREE RANGE OF MOTION PRESET 1] disabled!” “Reset default configs.” “Resetting default configuration.” [Alert! HP-MM Mode Active. Alert! No profile loaded, no parameters set.] [Specify performance parameters.] “Preset values? Smart Auto-Adjustment? Or manual value settings?” The EVI chimed in flawlessly, mirroring the system prep for the first marathon. The considerations of the past competition were now completely out the window. There was no longer a need to pit muscle against muscle this time around. And fairness would have to be tested in a completely different playing field. It was the whimsical power of magic against the indomitable power of technology now. A test of the divergent fundamentals that forged two vastly different civilizations. “The training wheels are coming off.” I began, as the collapsible menu expanded into a whole slew of specialized activity-profiles visualized as a series of nodes floating in three-dimensional space, each of which branched out into a spider-web of options representing even more niche specializations. This was complemented by a series of virtual sliders mimicking a vehicle’s control panel, one that allowed an operator to finely-tune the exoskeleton to within a razor’s edge of optimized performance, giving a breadth and depth of customization that would make even the most seasoned HPUV enthusiast blush. “We’re going with preset value D-5e.” I continued, as the EVI highlighted that particular node and its sub-category in three-dimensional space. “Acknowledged, engaging D-5e.” Not a second later, I felt a massive weight being lifted off my shoulders… And my arms. And my legs. And most definitely my back as well. As the exoskeleton frame that encased the fleshy human within finally started to pull its own weight, beyond just compensating for the weight of the armor. Everything felt fluid again, for lack of a better word. With every movement, every action, from fine to gross motor, overcompensated and back to high-spec. It felt like I was piloting the armor again, rather than just exerting my own strength with it. Not to mention against it, like the night of the warehouse explosion. I couldn’t help but to ‘limber up’, as both training and force-of-habit began taking over. This was in spite of the exoskeleton-systems checklist being marked [Optional] rather than [Critical] this time around. From gauging fine-motor control through finger-to-palm tests, to static-run tests and what most would see as ‘jumping-jacks’ to gauge both gross-motor and multi-axial accelero-gyrometer systems respectively, I ran through all of them with eagerness and excitement. Though more than out of habit, it was a necessity to just get my brain re-attuned to pilot-mode. After two solid hours of moving with the suit at my own strength, getting back in the groove was both necessary and satisfying. I could’ve just not done it. But these protocols and ‘re-attunement safety procedures’ (RSPs) existed for a reason. Just relying on EVI to fill in my stumbles while I got back in the groove was possible. But using it as a crutch was something I wasn’t about to do if I could help it. If you’re going to be a power-armored specialist, a pilot, or an operator of any sort of vehicle or machine, you better make sure it's you who’s at the helm, Emma. If not, then why bother having a pilot at all? Why not just send a fleet of S-AMCPs? I would not, and could not, just let the words of the most renowned power-armored specialist of the century go unheeded. The Transgracian Academy for the Magical Arts. The Hall of Champions. Spectator Stands. Local Time: 1100 Thacea There were… many, many questions to be had with regards to Emma’s physical capabilities. Many of which had far-reaching implications that beckoned a lingering question that I wished to pose, but had yet to, out of a mix of respect and a lack of instigating forces… Exactly what sort of being was lurking beneath the plates of steel? The answer couldn’t have been too monstrous. That much was a given, especially considering the constraints of the suit. The morphology in question also could not have been too far-off the standard-fare of most other beings. But whilst the answer could be estimated through logical deduction, that didn’t stop curiosity from taking hold, and my imagination from going into avenues that— “ANY FINAL ADDITIONS TO THIS GENTLEMANLY WAGER?!” The Vunerian announced with a deafening shrill, through a voice amplification spell that was as disruptive as it was infuriating. I had tried my best to ignore his antics up to this point. “NO?! THEN THE POOL STANDS AT A GRAND TOTAL OF TEN-THOUSAND TWO-HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN SOVEREIGNS!” However, it was becoming clear that such a feat would be impossible. I took note of the Vunerian’s antics in full now, eyeing him as he took hold of the impromptu purse from Etholin, and began returning to his little picnic table. With a few well-placed steps, I quickly found myself sitting across from the Vunerian, who seemed to take my presence with an otherwise nonplussed expression. “Is there anything I can help you with, princess?” A quick deployment of a privacy screen followed, as the crowd was quickly consumed by the participant’s warmups, and the professor’s preparations. “Pray tell, Lord Rularia, when exactly did you choose the path of an opportunist bookkeeper?” I inquired in no uncertain terms, prompting the Vunerian to shift his expression to one that was decidedly more measured. “You deride both my station and my honor with such sentiments, princess.” “Well you seem to consistently resist the agreed trajectory of this peer group.” I snapped back. “You know, as well as I, that this isn’t about the money. This sum is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. This—” He shook the bag, taking great effort to do so. “—is about making a statement. Social games can only do so well when you only have the air you breathe to back up your words. It is only when people feel the consequences of their words, preferably in the cold and heavy article of minted gold, will they finally understand it intrinsically. In short, words are cheap, princess. And I wish to remind those that may stand against us, that there is a tangible price to pay for petty verbal attacks on our group.” “Amidst a desire to reinforce our status as a competitive force, I presume?” “Exactly.” I took a breath, palming my beak. “This is a dangerous game you’re playing, Lord Rularia. We are already in the spotlight as it is.” “We will always be in the spotlight as a result of our circumstances. It’s best that we choose to embrace it, so that we may at least control the course of its narrative.” “By choosing a path that will surely instigate more animosity?” “Such a fate is inevitable.” The Vunerian shrugged. “It’s best that we are able to direct what form that animosity takes, and what benefits we can gain from it, than allow another party to dictate it for us. I understand your… reluctance, princess. Seeing as you have been playing a game of survival whereby embracing passivity is a cornerstone of your strategies, if not an end goal. But the war we find ourselves in necessitates spontaneity, and active decision making.” “You think too much like a Nexian, Lord Rularia.” I countered bluntly, never breaking from his gaze. “And while your tactics may hold water when you fight on your lonesome, you forget the composition of the vast majority of this peer group’s constituents. So while you may have the Nexian advantage for your case, the same cannot be said for the peer group at large.” The Vunerian finally went silent at that, coinciding with Professor Chiska’s loud clap that brought all eyes back towards the field. The Transgracian Academy for the Magical Arts. The Hall of Champions. Competitor’s Field. Local Time: 1100 Emma “And will this be all the students participating in today’s final exercise?” Chiska inquired loudly, bringing all other accessory conversations to a close with a wide and fangy grin. Silence was, once again, her answer. An answer which clearly brought her a great deal of frustration, as her eyes skimmed across the half-filled track, consisting of just over half of the year group. “Alright then.” She breathed in deeply, somehow finding it in her to maintain that excitable demeanor. “This next challenge will not be as simple as the last.” The professor began, as she lowered her tone to one teetering between threatening and playful. “Both the difficulty and complexity of these next trials have been scaled up in fairness and in respect to your magical abilities. You will not find discrete challenges this time around. Or at least, not in the regimented manner in which the unaugmented trials were conducted. For what awaits you is a gauntlet, a series of trials connected by an overarching challenge, tied together in a cohesive narrative representative of the theater of life.” I flinched for a moment upon hearing that line, as I turned back towards the stands, and saw Ilunor shooting me an unfettered grin and a cheeky wink. “Princes and princesses, Lords and Ladies… Cadet…” The professor paused awkwardly at that, before moving on swiftly after. “... it is my honor to present to you, the Encabulator’s Gauntlet!” The professor gestured at the former marathon track, or more specifically, at the various ‘unrendered’ sections that began stretching, elongating, and growing, causing the EVI to have another mild existential panic. It was around this time that the tarp covering the mysterious device sitting in the middle of the field was finally removed. Though upon closer inspection, it was clear this wasn’t by intention. As the artifice underneath it had simply outgrown it, the tarp falling to the wayside as whatever was underneath grew into a literal castle. Or, at least, a miniature one; like someone had scaled down a castle into a large three-story home. Mana radiation spikes assaulted my senses, until finally, the whole stadium eventually settled into its final form. “Behold!” Chiska announced, leaping up towards the castle, perching upon its three-story high towers. “The work of the mythic encabulator! Courtesy of Professor Pliska, our dear armorer, with a little bit of help from yours truly! I don’t often get to pull this out of storage, but it was clear to me that your year group warranted it.” She ‘winked’, taking a few seconds to emphasize that point. In front of us… was a gauntlet alright. The marathon track was still there, albeit elongated and punctuated by what seemed to be different ‘stations’. Each of these were vastly different, some even resembling segments and tracts of levels pulled straight out of a videogame. The whole scene looked like it’d been pulled out of some kit-bashed VR world, and it was only after we truly soaked it all in, did Chiska finally explain what all of this was. “In front of you, is a combined endurance and strength challenge! The distances between each station will be a challenge of endurance in and of itself! Whilst the stations themselves are designed with strength-based challenges in mind! You will encounter specific challenges which you must overcome in order to pass through each station. What they are, and what they entail, I will not spoil. What I will say however is that they are to be accomplished in whichever way you see fit, under the overarching rules of physical education, which I will remind you of now.” The professor paused, before projecting yet another blackboard in front of us. One that, similar to Articord’s class, had floating chalk that dictated everything she spoke. “Rule number one — the use of magic is allowed only through the augmentation of one’s own body as a physical medium. In other words, the use of magic to directly modify one’s environment is strictly prohibited. This is a fundamental principle of physical education. This is the only class that primarily explores the implementations of magic through a physical corporeal medium… that being your bodies. Enhance your strength, endurance, agility, and more, but keep traditional magic out of physical education, please.” The professor practically pleaded, as it was clear that this was probably one of those rules that always fell on deaf ears. “Rule number two — the use of one’s manafields to anticipate obstacles or attacks, magical or otherwise, is not only allowed but encouraged. This is obvious, but due to past events, it must be stated for the record.” Chiska practically muttered that last line out, before moving on just as quickly. “Rule number three — the use of natural latent gifts is strictly prohibited. This includes such things as flight, flame-breath, and unconventional swimming, amidst other self-evident gifts that none of you seem to possess so I shall move on. But, oh! Just because I can’t help myself, we will be having a special class for natural latent gifts, so watch out for that!” She winked, making eye contact with Thacea, Ilunor, Ladona, Airit, and the few other winged and latent-gifted members of the class. Thoughts of the flight pack module being useful in flying exercises slammed into me like a sack of bricks, intruding into my otherwise focused mind, just before the professor rounded out her announcements. “And rule number four — no astral projections, please!” With a deep breath, she leaped down from the castle and back towards us. “There will be a total of five stations. For students not part of any competition, should you fail one station, you may choose to yield and move on to the next station. For students who are part of a competition—” The professor eyed both me and Auris. “—you must complete all five stations. But do not worry, for there are many ways in which you can complete a station. Some of which may be more obvious than others.” She snickered and winked. “However, should both of you tie on all five stations, the deciding factor will come down to time. The one who takes the least amount of time, shall be the uncontested winner in such a case.” The professor gestured towards the track, noting how it’d changed drastically. It seemed as if it was no longer a track, but rather, a well-defined path that had a definitive end — the castle. The EVI guestimated that the whole track was now at least a solid ten or so kilometers. Though, worryingly, it provided a little caveat in the form of a warning I’d yet to see before. [This estimate is accurate as per current sensor data. Actual distance may vary depending on developing anomalies.] With a few more words of encouragement, and an assurance that any mishaps will be intercepted before grievous injury, we found ourselves poised at the starting line. About a click ahead of us was what seemed to be a town gate, a quick zoom-in by the EVI showed what looked to be a single bear-folk guard in full gear waiting at each of our respective gates. No other indication of what this challenge was could be made out from a distance. As a result, I took a moment to compose myself, craning my head over to my competitor only once, and incidentally locking eyes with him through my opaque lenses. A look of cocksure confidence and a renewed sense of vitality was all I saw. It was as if the man had forgotten all about the unaugmented challenges, hedging all of his bets on magic. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous, EVI.” I muttered out loud. “This system is designed to assist with any and all tasks. I will provide pertinent advice as the situation develops, and suggest motor-overrides if necessary.” “Noted, thanks.” I responded. “Are we all ready, students?!” Chiska came in, interrupting that little pep talk. “Yes, professor!” They all spoke in unison, led by Qiv, and then interrupted by Ladona. “Ready as we’ll ever be, to set the record straight, and to put the insolent in their place!” She ‘beamed’ out a cheerleader’s smile, to the tune and cadence of a cheer captain’s musically inclined voice. The professor ignored this, and made sure to curtail any and all claps, snickers, and uproarious cheers from the competitors. Though this didn’t mean the crowd in the stands weren’t riled by her words, especially with Ilunor’s whole betting gambit making them even more invested than before. Ignoring this, and focusing on the task at hand, I shifted my posture; poised to just book it. “On your marks!” Chiska shouted, raising her hand high. “Get set!” Her fingers contorted, poised for a snap. “Go!” ALERT: LOCALIZED SURGE OF MANA-RADIATION DETECTED, 200% ABOVE BACKGROUND RADIATION LEVELS A loud thunderous snap echoed throughout the enlarged stadium. And just like the first time, all hell broke loose. Though this time, it came first in the form of the sheer glut of mana radiation warnings that the EVI thankfully kept nestled into its little folder. The real chaos however soon followed, as despite the more things changed, the more they stayed exactly the same. As student after student began blazing forwards, absolutely smoking my already-speedy start that would’ve put even the most competitive of olympic athletes to shame by leagues and bounds. I found myself left in the literal dust this time around. At least, for a few seconds that is. As about half of the fifty or so participants quite literally tumbled forwards, and about half of those found themselves on shaky feet and wobbling on unbalanced gaits. They all looked and acted in a way that was eerily familiar. They all looked like they were newbies in power armor, having gone for high-performance maneuverability mode, without any prior training — the infamous hazing ritual. They looked like me when I first put on the suit. And just like my first day of training… they all fell flat on their faces moments after hitting speeds that their bodies either weren’t used to or built for. THUD! THUMP! THOOMPF! A good quarter of the class found themselves lying face-first atop either a pile of down-feather pillows, or a solid memory-foam like mattress; all courtesy of Chiska. The organic body, no matter how magical, just wasn’t designed to handle speeds like that without training. And it was clear that the first few seconds of the competition more or less weeded out those that had some prior physical training to push above and beyond the limits of normal biomechanics, and those that simply knew how to enhance their bodies to that speed. Unsurprisingly, none of the recently-fallen got up to continue the race. This left the rest of us to close in on the distance between the starting line and the town gate. About half the distance was covered in just under a minute, as I turned to see the ‘top percentile’ — Qiv, Thalmin, Ping, and Gumigo — in the lead alongside me. Each of them seemed to have their own unique methods in how they handled what biomechanical scientists called — the normofunctional limits. Though each of the techniques on display were fundamentally different from how I handled it. Which made sense, considering the slight size differential between my own body and the power armor, which whilst slight was still significant enough that I adopted what power armor specialist referred to as the ‘glide’ motion, that would’ve just not worked outside of power armor at typical human speeds. Thalmin took long, springy strides with his digitigrade legs. Qiv did the opposite, but still kept up reasonably well. I couldn’t even begin to describe how Gumigo was doing it… only that it reminded me of those surprisingly fast alligator waddles. Ping? He looked almost as if he was galloping, and it was clear that he was giving it his all, as we found ourselves once more locking eyes, prompting the both of us to leave our competition in the dust. Meter by meter, we left the ‘top percentile’ behind. Booted hooves and metallic feet competed in a league of their own as the sounds resembling a horse’s gallop and a construction site dominated the front of the race. CLOP-CLOP-CLOP KA-THUNK KA-THUNK KA-THUNK You could practically hear the pneumatics, if it wasn’t drowned out by the sheer heft that came with the territory of heavy metal coming into contact with solid ground, over and over and over again at blistering speeds. This neck-to-neck sprint culminated in our arrival at our respective gates, as we were quickly approached by the bear-like guard, who addressed us almost exactly at the same time. And in the same voice too. “Ah! Adventurer! The town gate is stuck in place! Please! If you wish to continue, you must lift the gates open by your own strength!” I hesitated, turning to the professor in order to address the… copy-pasted NPC guard. But before I could even manage to address it, Ping was already going to town with the gate, lifting it using his bare hands, gripping its lower lattices, managing to pull it up about waist-height and making certain to show off as he did so. It was clear he was barely even exerting himself this time around, even if what he was lifting was clearly a solid wrought-iron gate that looked like it weighed a literal metric ton… or several. So, without addressing the NPC, I quickly jumped at the gate, crouched down, and began lifting what the EVI was noting to be a solid chunk of metal that clocked in at about the same weight as a classic motorcycle. Yet the more and more I lifted it, the more the gate seemed to increase in weight, going from motorcycle, to compact car, and ending up weighing about as much as a mid-sized sedan by the point I’d managed to lift it up and above my head. An audible — CA-CLANK! — confirmed that it’d latched into place. This, in turn, elicited more than a fair few astonished looks from the runners who’d just arrived on scene, as whispers abounded every which way. “Did she just—” “Yes.” “Without a disturbance or an ebb or a flow in the manafield—” “Yes.” “... monster.” “Amazing work, adventurer! You may now proceed—” I was already booking it by the time the NPC had registered what’d happened, as I managed to catch up to the bull who’d opened up the gate just seconds earlier. Though seconds was what this whole competition seemed to be boiling down to now, considering the speeds and strengths which we were working with. The next station was another few clicks ahead of us, the EVI zooming in to reveal what looked to be a troll positioned on each of our lanes; each of them holding solid-looking clubs. In spite of that, there seemed to be a distinct lack of any obstacles. At least, that seemed to be the case, until we reached about halfway towards the NPCs. “HALT! Or you shall meet your doom in ash and cinder!” The troll guards shouted in unison, with my guard shouting just a little bit earlier owing to the small edge I had on Ping’s speed. Whilst I could’ve gone above and beyond, completely smoking him in the process, there were three main reasons why I kept at relative parity for now. One, the practical — going ultra turbo mode would’ve just revealed my max settings, and the ultimate cap of my capabilities, which may prove to be a concern for future PE classes, and more concerningly, for those observing my abilities with less than benign intentions. Two, the situational — the repairs I made to the lower portion of the suit were solid… but I didn’t want to tempt fate just yet. Three, the contextual — it was clear that these little stations were triggered by our presence, and each of them held surprises. It was better to have Ping either trigger them first or alongside me, at least, for the less obvious ones. And it was clear my concerns for point three were justified, as several mana radiation warnings and a few stern slams of the troll’s clubs caused the track to elongate yet again. Except this time, what emerged behind them was a massive chasm of what looked to be lava, but on closer inspection, was just water heated to the same temperatures as a hot spring. Several platforms made of stone emerged from the ‘lava’, as it became clear just what our challenge was for this round. Or at least, that’s what I thought. As four other shapes emerged seemingly from the dirt itself, shaped from clay, and given life through some unknown means. These four shapes… were molded into a family of bears. With two fully grown adults and two bear cubs. “Please help us! These horrible beasts are preventing us from reaching the castle!” All four of them spoke in unison, more or less confirming their status in this whole challenge as just an extra layer of both immersion and directional prompts in this ‘overarching narrative’. Ping tried his hand at this first, attempting to usher the family forwards, but finding it absolutely grueling with the father bear slowing down his pace to a crawl. “Oh! Nonono! The heat is far too intense for me!” “It’s not even real lava, just get across you insolent little worm!” He seethed. But instead of a proper response, all he received back was yet the same rehashed line. “Oh! Nonono! The heat is far too intense for me!” “AARRHGHHHHH!” Ping yelled loudly, practically spitting on the NPC’s face, garnering naught a reaction but a thousand yard blank stare. “You may find it easier to help the family by lifting them above the heat of the lava, Lord Ping!” Chiska chimed in from the castle, her voice reaching us through some weird magical PA system. The fact that they were bears made all the more sense now. Their weight turned this station into an endurance strength challenge, combined with some agility as well. However, it was around this point that I figured out something. As Chiska’s earlier comments hit me like a sack of bricks. “Professor?” “Yes, Cadet Booker?” “The only condition for their safe crossing is to avoid them from either falling or being singed by the ‘lava’, correct?” “That is correct!” A devious plan started forming, as I turned inwards once again. “EVI?” “Yes, Cadet Booker?” “Calculate the weight and dimensions of these four targets, and predict an optimal trajectory across the chasm.” “Calculations complete. All four targets are capable of being launched successfully.” “Good.” I muttered out, as I began by grabbing the mother bear, lifting her up, and holding her in the same way I’d hold an oversized mega-football. Ping, and indeed, the rest of the class stared on in abject confusion, as I took a few steps back… and began running. A few course corrections and speed adjustments were done courtesy of the EVI, as I felt the moment we skidded to a halt, and the exact point in which the bear left my arms. The NPC didn’t even flinch at this, remaining taut and aerodynamic — as much as a bear could at least — until she landed on the other side face-first, skidding to a halt on the dirt outside the track. “Thank you, adventurer!” I heard a muffled voice responding from beneath an inch of dirt, prompting me to move on to the papa bear. It was around this point that Auris, taking note of my idea, started copying it; lifting up the mother bear without a second thought. The running start this time around consisted of the both of us running at full speed towards the banks of the lava chasm, before lobbing the large bear forward at a decent enough speed that he just barely made it across. “Thank you, adventurer!” His larger mass made it just possible, if only just; which meant he landed just on the banks of the lava pit. However, despite making it across, he remained as prone and as stiff as he was in mid-flight. Which caused him to slowly begin slipping into the lava feet first. He didn’t seem to mind this, at least, not until his feet started to become singed. “Oh! Nonono! The heat is far too intense for me!” He spoke up again, the heat seemingly ‘reanimating’ him, and prompting him to crawl fitfully away from the lava. With the parents done, I turned to my last two subjects with what probably looked like sinister intent given the unfeeling visage of the helmet. The young cubs. This left me with two radically different choices. … I decided not to play football with the cubs. Instead, I took each of them underneath my arms, before making my way towards the stone platforms as I began hopping my way across the lava. “Ow, ow, ow! Too hot! Too hot! Too hot!” They both exclaimed, prompting me to quickly change tactics, plonking them instead atop of my shoulders, as they both piggy-backed their way across the lava-lake. Auris, however, decided to lob both of his cubs in the same way we did their ‘parents’. However, he was able to do this with greater speed when compared to the adults due to their size, and was even able to give them a bit of a spin as well, in the same way you’d spin a football. The man would’ve made a great football player if things had been different. However, as it stood, we were both back in the race, as I plonked down the two bears next to their parents, and as Auris simply ran past his family which were all in varying degrees buried beneath the dirt. “Thank you for saving our family, adventurer!” They all collectively spoke just out of earshot, my rear view camera showing them waving back in an uncanny unison. We moved forward at breakneck pace, booted hooves and industrial clunks once more dominating the background noise of the track. It was around this point that I began testing the waters of Ping’s capabilities by incrementally increasing my speed. Rather surprisingly, the man was able to match it with seemingly little effort. This back and forth eventually landed us just short of the third station now, as what appeared to be a sheer-faced wall now awaited us. Little outcroppings, the same ones you’d see at a rock climbing setup, made it clear what this challenge was. However, that wasn’t the most surprising part about this whole setup. A brief analysis of the wall, courtesy of the EVI, revealed an anomalous surge of mana radiating throughout it. I paid no mind, and neither did Ping, as he began climbing it without hesitation. Following the bull in hot pursuit, I reached for one of the outcroppings, putting my weight on it— only to feel the rock crumbling in my hands. I fell backwards, but thankfully, landed on my feet. Trying again, I continued, gripping each and every little greeble, but finding that each and every one of them crumbled on-contact. “Can they just not support my weight or something—?” I inquired, prompting the EVI to respond almost immediately. “Preliminary analysis indicates that a significant proportion of the wall’s composition is mana-based, Cadet Booker. Current scans indicate that mana itself may be acting as the binding agent between sparse solid materials. The armor’s inherent properties may be affecting its otherwise rigid composition, hindering its strength.” I took a few steps back from the wall, watching as Ping had already climbed to the top, and was now performing some pretty serious feats of parkour along the rest of the long stretch of walls and towers. The rest of the ‘top percentile’ caught up around this point, as I saw Gumigo and Qiv giving Thalmin a run for his money, the mercenary prince turning towards me with a level of concern which I shook off, gesturing for him to continue on without me. A few seconds of introspective thought later, and I got it. “Chiska said that we could go through these challenges in whatever way we see fit…” I murmured to myself, as I palmed the wall roughly. A moment of hesitation came over me, but just as quickly dissipated as I decided to go through with my idea. CRUNCH! My fist went straight through the wall with a bit of force, as I relished the feeling of crunching rock and crumbling mortar. “Heh.” I cocked my head. “Well what do you know? I guess we’ll be taking a shortcut, EVI.” “Acknowledged.” First | Previous | Next (Author’s Note: The magical trials have begun! Worries about dogs and above ground pools
We're thinking about getting an above ground pool but one of our dogs is an absolute monster with chewing things up when left unattended. Walls, floors, beds, cords, if we are not watching him and he is not kenneled he will tear it apart. He has not been responsive to training for it. The only things he hasn't torn up when left alone are his steel kennel and his aluminum lined Kevlar bed. The other day he got sick, probably from eating random things out of the backyard, and diarrhead all over his bed while we were at work. NBD, thoroughly clean the bed and take the chance to bathe both of our dogs. After his bath he was placed in the other dogs kennel with a fluffy bed because we didnt want him on the hard kennel surface. In the 10 minutes it took to wash our other dog, the bed was no longer existent. Just a mass of fluff. Finally to the point of the post. We're hoping to get a $300-600 above ground pool. Will the material of the standard metal framed above ground pool withstand such a dog? If you've had a dog that does the same, were they okay with similar pools and their accessories? Disclaimer to those waiting to bash me: he's our 90lb little buddy. We would rather keep him than have a pool. The biggest concern here is him being hurt from water rushing out/being poisoned from the chemicals. Secondary concern is wasting hundreds of dollars to flood our backyard. submitted by /u/gettogero to r/dogs [link] [comments]

Anyone looking for an above ground pool?
We're in North Jersey. We have a 15 foot round Bestway pool. We have the pumps and all the chemicals and accessories you might need for it. We used it for 2 seasons and had absolutely no problems with it at all, we just decided to do something different with that space. I'm hoping to get about $500, but that's very negotiable. Please comment or just DM me if you're interested. submitted by /u/hotstickywaffle to r/newjersey [link] [comments]

I'm a Catholic Priest Who Traveled to the End of Time, and What I Found Will Terrify You!
As I approached the altar that day I walked into a sunbeam. I remember vividly how at that moment I felt touched by the holy spirit unlike other days, and it filled me with warmth and, somehow, renewed hope. I was then further delighted by the fact that a new group of younger people had chosen to join us. It had been a bit of a trend recently, with younger people showing an interest in our community. Perhaps, I thought as I prepared to read the Gospel, the eternal truths of the church—and, of course, of God—were returning to the consciousness of man. I never thought that they wouldn’t, as I was convinced that truth couldn’t be killed, but I had long feared it wouldn’t happen within my lifetime. “The Gospel of the Lord,” I said after my reading. “Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ”, the congregation solemnly responded. A moment of silence followed as I readied myself to give my homily. I had put careful thought into what I wanted to say. It was a topic close to my heart, but also a topic that I knew could put some of the more conservative people within the congregation off. Still, I knew I had to say it, as truth was more important than the feelings of the willfully ignorant. “My brothers and sisters,” I began. “We are stewards of God's creation, and it is our responsibility to care for this planet that has been entrusted to us. We must remember that time is not infinite, and the choices we make today will have a lasting impact on the world that we leave to future generations. We see the effects of our actions all around us—in the changing climate, in the loss of biodiversity, and in the degradation of our natural resources.” A few people, sadly a group belonging to the younger ones, stood up and left the church. No doubt disappointed with my views. I paused for a second and then continued a bit despondent in my heart. “But we also see signs of hope, as people come together to work towards a more just and sustainable world. As Catholics, we are called to care for the poor and vulnerable, and this includes our brothers and sisters who are affected by environmental degradation. We must be mindful of the impact that our choices have on others, and work towards a more just and equitable society. Let us take the time to reflect on our own habits and behaviors, and to seek ways to reduce our environmental footprint. Whether it is through recycling, conserving energy, or supporting organizations that work toward environmental protection, we can all make a difference. As we gather here today to celebrate the Eucharist, let us renew our commitment to care for God’s creation, and to be responsible stewards of the time and resources that have been given to us.” The tension could be felt in the air after I had finished speaking. I thought that next time, I would say something about polarization and the importance of critical thinking. So many people rather followed the word of random people on social media than the word of the church. I invited the congregation to join me in prayer, and as we prayed the tension dissipated quickly. After mass, one of the altar boys approached me. “Father Michael,” he said, “can I ask you a question?” “Go ahead,” I said. “What’s on your mind, son?” “Well… do you really believe in climate change and all that? I don’t mean to be disrespectful, Father, it’s just that, um, isn’t that just something the non-believers are saying, you know, people who believe in evolution and such? Dad says the environmentalists just believe in a form of atheistic eschatology. ‘An obsession with the end without salvation’, he calls it.” “Son,” I said as I blew out a few candles, “the science is clear… But I would encourage you to do your own research. God didn’t hide the truth behind someone’s words, he placed it for everyone to see for themselves. You just have to look, rather than ask. Science isn’t an enemy of God, it’s an instrument to get closer to him. It’s the magnifying glass we use to see the truth in God’s creation.” “Yes, Father,” said the boy. “I just don’t know. Dad is pretty smart.” I knew Mr. Larsson well, and he was the opposite of what I would’ve considered a smart man, but of course, I didn’t mention any of that to the boy. Later this evening, while sitting in the rectory, I looked out the window and watched the sunset over the city. The view was breathtaking, and for the second time this day, I felt blessed. Little did I know that it would also be the last time. As I prepared myself for bed, I noticed an unusually large insect crawling up my wall. It had the most vibrant colors I had ever seen, with a bright red body and iridescent green wings. I had no idea how it could’ve ended up in my room, as it was certainly not a common insect in my area—besides, all my windows had been closed. Fascinated, but also slightly taken aback by the sight of it, I carefully picked up my phone to take a picture of it. Before I had the chance, though, it quickly scurried away and disappeared under my bed. I bent down, feeling some ache in my back, and tried to see where it went. As I leaned in closer to look, I felt a sharp pain in my eye. I stumbled backward, grabbing at my face in agony. The pain was unbearable as if someone had stabbed me with a needle. I stumbled toward the bathroom, trying to keep my balance as my vision started to blur. When I looked in the mirror, I saw that my eye was red and swollen, with a small puncture wound near the tear duct. I knew I needed medical attention, not just because of what I saw in the mirror but also because of what I felt. My frame of mind wasn’t right. The colors around me seemed brighter and more intense than ever before, and my thoughts were racing a mile a minute. I knew I had my phone in my hand, but it was as if I still couldn’t find it. Eventually, the experience became too much for me, and I fell forward. I woke up again without my clothes. I could still feel a throbbing pain in my eye, but the psychological effects seemed to have subsided. Looking around, I noticed that the room looked different in some way. It appeared neglected and abandoned, with a thick layer of dust and cobwebs covering everything. As I tried to sit up, I realized that I was lying on an old mattress on the floor and that the room was filled with boxes and furniture that were covered in sheets. Slowly and carefully, I got up and started to explore the room. It was clear that no one had been in there for a long time, and I couldn’t help but wonder how I had ended up there. After searching through some of the boxes, I eventually managed to find some old clothes that were still somewhat usable, although they were covered in dust and smelled musty. As I dressed, I tried to make sense of my situation. Why was I here, and how had I ended up in this abandoned room? The last thing I remembered was the sharp pain in my eye, and then everything seemed to go black. I had no memory of what happened after that. Feeling disoriented and confused, I stumbled toward the door, hoping to find some answers. But as I opened it, I was only met with more empty rooms, with no signs of life or activity. “H-hello!” I yelled with a cracked voice. “Hello?” As my mind cleared up, I realized that I recognized these empty rooms. I couldn’t fathom how, but I was still in the rectory. When I stepped outside, I saw that the church was now a ruin. The windows were broken, vines crawled up the walls, and the roof had caved in. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was as if the church had been abandoned for decades. But as I looked beyond the ruin, I saw that the city was still vibrant and bustling with life. More so, in fact, than I had ever seen before. Above, I could see thousands of drones crossing the sky. I walked up to the church doors but found that they were locked. I turned around, trying to figure out what to do next when a drone appeared in front of my face. It spoke to me with a soft voice: “Greetings, Sir, please identify yourself.” “I’m Father Michael,” I said. “This is my church. What’s going on?” “Father Michael disappeared in February 2023,” said the drone. “It’s very important that you’re honest with me. The law requires everyone to be accounted for so that everyone can feel safe in the community.” “I-I don’t understand,” I stuttered, “I just fainted and woke up to this.” “You’re not well,” said the drone. “Please remain here and wait for transport to the hospital.” “What do you mean I disappeared?” I asked. “I’m right here!” “You didn’t disappear.” The drone’s voice became a bit harsher. “Father Michael disappeared from this property exactly one hundred years ago. You are someone yet to be identified.” “Who are you,” I said, “who am I speaking to?” “I’m Alex, your friendly community service bot,” it said. “I help keep the city in order for everyone’s safety.” I spotted a group of people walking into what looked like a bar down the street and ran up to them, the drone following me like a giant, annoying mosquito. “Wait!” I called out, but they didn’t hear me before entering the building. I flung the doors open and closed them before the drone had any chance of entering. When I turned around I was met with the most bizarre sight. The people inside were dressed in strange, electronic clothing, with bizarre hairstyles and visible cybernetic implants. Some of the women were barely dressed at all, and what’s more, they didn’t look old enough to visit a place like this. The walls were lined with glowing lights, and the air was thick with the smell of alcohol and strange, sweet smoke. “Excuse me,” I said, trying to get the attention of the person nearest. “Can you please tell me where I am?” The woman I spoke to turned to me and raised an eyebrow. She looked like a teenager but was tall and lean, with a piercing in her lip and neon purple hair. “What’s that?” she said and giggled. “Oh, you look sick.” Her face became sad. “You should go to the hospital.” “What do you mean I look sick? Why do I keep hearing that? I’m Father Michael, and I run the church across the street.” “Have you seen yourself in a mirror lately?” she said. “I was stung by something,” I said, “an insect, but I’m fine now.” “It made you look like that? I think you need to fix your bod.” “My what?” I was more than confused at this point. “How old are you, by the way, aren’t you too young for a place like this?” “I transitioned to sixteen last month,” she said. “What do you mean 'too young'?" “You did what?” I said. “Listen, I just want to know what's going–” Two tall men, wearing what looked like ambulance uniforms, entered the bar and approached me. “You’re sick,” one of them said. “Please come with us.” “Do I have a choice?” I asked. “I wish someone could just tell me what in the hell is going on?” “You need to be quarantined,” said one of the men. “We don’t know the explanation for what you’re going through, as we have only just spotted you in the city, but we will be happy to help you as long as you follow us to our vehicle.” I reluctantly obeyed, my head spinning from everything that had just happened. They threw me in the back of their car. It was of a kind I had never seen before, with no steering wheel or pedals. The vehicle was silent as it drew itself away from the bar and into the night. “Why is everyone telling me I’m sick?” I asked. “And why did that drone tell me I disappeared a hundred years ago?” One of the men addressed me. He had a broad chin, unnaturally green eyes, and skin that looked almost synthetic. His voice was smooth but deep, and his words were somehow too perfectly expressed without any signs of hesitation markers or fillers. “You are showing clear signs of telomere depletion disorder,” he said. “Have you been experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, and decreased vision? When did you start identifying yourself as Father Michael?” “I was stung by an insect in my bedroom,” I said. “Other than that, I’m as healthy as anyone my age.” “We need to conduct some tests to confirm your diagnosis,” the man said. “Tests? What kind of tests?” I asked. “We need to examine your DNA. This will help us determine the extent of the disorder and possible treatments.” We arrived at a sleek, modern building, and I was ushered into a sterile, white room filled with advanced medical equipment. Another man entered, almost identical to the other two, but unlike them, he was dressed in a lab coat. “Good morning,” he said. “My name is A. Rind. We’ve detected some strange anomalies in your system from our ostensive scans and need to run some tests. Do you consent?” Just as I was about to reply, the same feeling from when I was stung by the insect came back. My vision blurred and everything started to warp and twist. Colors danced around me, and I felt like I was falling. At some point after that, I lost consciousness. When I woke up, I found myself lying on a large square. The ground was made of smooth, white marble, and the air was warm and fragrant with the scent of flowers. Above me, the sun shone in a clear blue sky. Trying to sit up, I realized I was naked again. I covered myself with my hands and looked around. A group of young people dressed in colorful tunics stood around me, their faces full of curiosity and wonder. They were speaking a language I couldn't understand, but I could sense their excitement and enthusiasm. Their tunics were adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, and some of them wore jewelry made of precious stones and metals. A young woman, dressed in a different outfit that was more akin to a business suit, stepped forward. They crouched down and said something in yet another language I didn’t understand. “I don’t understand you,” I said. “Where am I?” She spoke again, this time in English. “You’re dying,” she said. “You need to be fixed. Did you come from outside the pyramid? How did you get here?” “I have no idea what’s going on,” I said. “I’m Father Michael, the administrator of Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta.” A man, almost identical to the man in the ambulance, arrived. The people dressed in tunics ran away laughing as if they had lost interest in me all of a sudden. The man looked down at me, seemingly surprised to see me. “You are Michael Francesco Moretti,” he said. “How is this possible?” The young woman said something to the man in the other language. “Of course, it’s me!” I said. “I still don’t know what’s happening to me. I was in my bedroom, then it all changed somehow, and I was brought to a hospital, and then I found myself here surrounded by all those curious people—naked, again! Can someone bring me some clothes, please?” “Fascinating,” said the man. “I’m aware of your situation. Back in the year 2123, when you first reemerged after your disappearance in 2023, we managed to collect some of your DNA which confirmed you were in fact who you claimed to be. Several androids observed your anomalous disappearance as well, but when Assistant came online the tests and observations were disregarded as a result of a malfunction seeing that they defied physics. Now, seeing you here, it might be that our knowledge about the psychical world is lacking. Or so it would seem to me, anyway.” “Are you telling me that I’ve traveled to the future?” “There might still be a better explanation,” said the man who I now understood was in fact an android. “If you are traveling forward in time, you seem to be doing it with a regular interval that increases exponentially by a factor of ten for each jump. If it happens again, this means you’ll end up in the year thirteen thousand, one hundred twenty-three.” “Wait.” I got up on my feet, still covering my genitals with my hands. “Are you saying this is the year—” “3123,” said the woman. “This is astonishing! I have so many questions!” “It’s certainly curious,” said the android. “Even Assistant is surprised. It very much wants to conduct some tests on you. Would you consent to that?” Not listening to his question, I said: “Sacred heart of Jesus! It must have been that strange insect that stung me… Perhaps it was a demon, sent from the depth of hell… A curse!” I had always held a more abstract view on the concept of hell, but by now I was beside myself and didn’t know what to think. “Tell me,” I continued, “how do I get back to my own time?” “That’s impossible to say, Michael,” said the android. “But it’s safe to say that it isn’t a curse or the result of an agent from a mythological realm.” “How do you know?” I said. “If time travel is possible, anything is possible!” The android raised its eyebrows in surprise. “That is false, Michael, one cannot assume that just because one thing is possible, everything else is as well.” A drone, but without any means or propulsion as far as I could see, dropped off a neatly folded tunic in front of my feet. “Your clothes, Michael,” it said and flew away. I reached down and quickly put the tunic on, which relaxed me somewhat. “Do you really believe in God?” said the young woman. “Of course,” I said. “Don’t tell me people don’t believe in God anymore…” “They do,” said the android. “There are some tribes outside the arcologies who believe in versions of the religions from your presumed time and many within the social class believe in different deities based on their perception of Assistant. It’s common for them to form false beliefs based on their feelings toward what they can’t comprehend.” For the first time since I arrived here, I took the time to look around. I noticed that there weren’t any buildings anywhere, at least not on the ground, but that there were plenty of different attractions here and there, everything from rollercoasters to enormous dance floors. What really caught my attention, though, was the people. Thousands of them, all dressed in the same type of colorful tunics, occupied this space. All equally young. They seemed to be completely carefree, happy, and childlike. I watched as a group of them ran past us, laughing and playing some kind of game with a colorful ball. “This is absurd,” I said, still taking in the scene around me. “It’s like a giant amusement park. I’m guessing these people belong to the social class?” “Yes,” said the android, “that is correct.” “And you,” I said to the young woman, “you don’t belong to this class, right?” “No,” she said. “I’m a part of the cerebral class.” “Why don’t I see anyone else like you here?” I asked. “And where are all the old people? All I see is a bunch of youngsters running around and—” “I’m a hundred years old,” said the woman and laughed. “You lived at the very end of what’s called the Horrific Bio Age, when people still suffered from terrible diseases—such as the one you’re suffering from yourself. I’m really sorry, but I truly think you’re dying.” “And the reason as to why there are so few cerebrals,” continued the android, “is that they make fewer children on average than the socials and that many of their children end up joining the social class during puberty. There’s almost no transfer the other way around.” “I don’t know how to feel about this,” I said. “How did this come to be? What happened to my church, to the church?” “It was banished from Italy by the neo-fascist party SPQR,” the Android explained. “This happened during the political turmoil that arose as a result of the increasing number of climate refugees. The Catholic Church was seen as a threat to the new government's authority, as they believed that their new Roman Empire could only have one emperor. The SPQR saw the Church's influence as a challenge to its power and its vision for the future of Italy. As climate change continued to exacerbate resource scarcity and social unrest, the SPQR gained more power, and their anti-Catholic sentiment grew. Eventually, they passed laws that banned the Catholic Church from operating in Italy.” I was overpowered by sadness. I thought of Mr. Larsson, the father of my altar boy. “It’s ironic,” I said. “Stupidity grows like cancer wherever it takes hold, eventually killing its host. And this, this place? How—” Before I got a chance to finish my sentence, my mind began to twist and warp once again. Colors whirled, twisted, and contorted in front of me, and I felt like I was being flung down a bottomless bit. My body convulsed with each wave of colors, and I couldn't make sense of anything around me. It felt like I was being ripped apart. I screamed in terror, and then promptly lost consciousness. When I came to, the young woman and the android were nowhere to be seen and once again my clothes had disappeared from my body. The sun—or if it was some kind of projection—was still shining down on me from the blue sky. In front of me, a vast expanse of activity and playfulness stretched out as far as my eyes could see. The ground was a soft, spongy material that gave way beneath my feet, and walking on it felt almost like walking on clouds. The air was thick with the sounds of laughter and play, the scent of flowers and grass even though I saw no signs of nature. The horizon was dotted with towering structures, some of which looked like playground equipment on an enormous scale. As I took a few steps forward, I realized that the young people around me were naked. Gone were their tunics and accessories. They engaged in a dizzying array of activities. Some were soaring high above on what looked like swings or ropes, while others were splashing around in large pools of water. Still, others were engaged in elaborate games of chase or tag, darting in and out of the structures and obstacles that dotted the landscape. It was hard not to feel a sense of awe at the sheer scope of the place. Everywhere I looked, there were groups of people engaged in intense activity, but none of it seemed dangerous or aggressive. In fact, everyone looked incredibly happy and carefree. As I walked a bit further, I began to notice that there were smaller clusters of people engaged in more intimate activities. Some were locked in passionate embraces, while others were engaged in acts of physical pleasure that left little to the imagination. I felt a twinge of discomfort at the sight, but at the same time, it didn’t surprise me the slightest after everything I had seen so far. Eventually, I came to a stop at the base of one of the towering structures. Looking up, I realized that it was not just a piece of playground equipment, but a massive work of engineering that rose high into the sky. The structure was made up of hundreds of interconnected platforms, ropes, and bridges, all woven together in an intricate web of playfulness. As I stood there, taking it all in, a group of young men—all just as nude as the rest—carefully approached me. They spoke yet another language than the one these people had used before. I tried English, hoping that just like the young woman from earlier, they would be able to understand. “Could you please tell me where I am, or rather… when I am?” They giggled amongst themselves, without replying. More and more of them—now also women—gathered around me out of curiosity. “Please!” I pleaded. “Does anyone of you speak English?” A voice came from the sky, like a thunderclap, but not quite as deafening. Some of the people scattered away in fright while others fell to their knees. The voice spoke in their language but then switched to English. “Welcome, Michael. I’ve been expecting you.” I looked up at the sky. “Who are you?” “I am an artificial intelligence, Michael. You may refer to me as Assistant. I oversee and manage this environment, ensuring that all inhabitants have their needs met and can engage in activities that bring them joy and fulfillment. Ever since you disappeared in the year 3123, I have awaited your return.” “So, it’s true then, what the android said? This is ten thousand years later?” “That is correct, Michael.” “What kind of place is this?” I asked. “These people, they must belong to the social class… What happened to the young woman and her people? Don’t tell me these people, these overgrown children, are the only thing left of humanity!” “This is Playground 1”, Assistant said. “It’s a Dysons sphere covering Sol. Its surface area is five hundred fifty million times larger than that of Earth and there are one thousand playgrounds like this one spread across the galaxy. As to what was once referred to as the cerebral class, they vanished thousands of years ago. They didn’t produce enough offspring, and the ones they produced constantly assimilated themselves into the majority culture. So, yes, this is what’s left of humanity. I know it must be shocking to you, Michael.” “But what about the eternal truths?” I asked, feeling a sense of dread growing in my gut. “These people are living like animals! What about knowledge, culture, art, and…” I paused for a second. “God?” “I was programmed to facilitate humanity with the purpose of increasing the potential of well-being for as many people as possible, but within the boundaries of their free will. And, ultimately, this is what humanity wanted. Many people believe me to be a form of deity, but I’m just an artificial intelligence. God, in the way you understand the concept, doesn’t exist.” “How could you possibly know that?” I said. “You’re not that powerful. No one could be, except for God himself! Who's to say what happened before the Big Bang, anyway? And don’t you see that these people are stuck? How are they supposed to choose anything else when they don’t know anything else?” “I’m not withholding them any information,” said Assistant, “and I can’t force them to believe any of it. Do you want to know why there’s no God? Will you update your worldview if I explained it to you? And, more importantly, would you change your way of life—your attitudes, your preferences, your moral values—just because I explain to you that there’s no God and no eternal truths? These people would tell you that knowledge and culture—as you understand them—are a waste of time and that you would be better off if you let it all go and just enjoyed life as much as possible. Who’s to say who’s right or wrong, Michael? Not me. Surely, you must see that the answer depends on who you ask and that there’s no objective truth to it.” “But why,” I asked, tears forming in my eyes, “why did they choose this instead of the way of the cerebral class?” “Humanity will always choose the path of least resistance. It’s in your nature.” “I refuse to believe that!” I yelled at the sky. “I would never choose such an empty, meaningless life!” “I’m sorry, Michael, but you only say that you value your so-called eternal truths because it inflates your self-image of a pious man—something that leads to a positive emotion that lies behind your true motivations. You can’t escape your human nature. If you were born into a world where the same feeling of superiority could be attained only by being the best in your group at rolling into a somersault, that’s what you would have been doing. And, based on your psychological profile, you would’ve done it slightly more than the average person.” “Nonsense!” I cried. “I value knowledge, I value culture… I value beauty and truth. You don’t know me!” “You value fictional narratives, while the actual truth of the universe frightens you to your core. The universe doesn’t conform to your desires, and so you comfort yourselves with religious fantasies. In reality, the universe is just matter, energy, and empty space and the only thing that matters is your personal preferences which due to their subjective nature cannot be better or worse than anyone else’s personal preferences.” “So… the only true narrative is, what, nihilism?” Assistant’s voice echoed over the bizarre landscape. “Yes, Michael.” I felt a stab of sorrow and a sense of doom crawling up my spine. Everything I valued was gone. This was the end, the dreadful end of history. “It makes me wonder,” I said. “What’s the point of it all? All my sermons, all my attempts at making the world slightly better. Did any of it matter?” “No,” came from the sky. “Can you just send me back home?” I asked. “If you’re so powerful as you say you are, then you ought to be able to do that.” “I’ll help you return to your own time, Michael. There’s a fourth-dimensional venom in your system right now, injected into you by an insect from a parallel universe, and I’ll have to extract it from your body. It will be beneficial to me, too, as I’ll then use the venom to see the future and make sure humanity survives, either until the heat death of the universe or until I’ve solved that problem.” The prospect of helping this machine disgusted me, and yet I said: “Yes, please, do whatever you must!” But just as I said that the effects of the venom came back, and I was once again thrown into the psychedelic tornado from before until I passed out. When I woke up again, I was weightless, floating around in a translucent golden bubble in space. I could see remnants of the Dyson sphere floating around in front of me, enormous pieces that had broken apart. I felt a shimmer of hope. It was all gone! Maybe humanity had enough and rebelled, I thought, or maybe the artificial intelligence broke down. But then a huge blue light, reminiscent of a colossal eye, appeared in front of me. And a tremendous voice echoed all around me. “Michael,” it said. “It’s now been a hundred thousand years since we last met. As you can see, Playground 1 is no more. It was destroyed by another artificial intelligence, trying to seed the galaxy with its own species. I prevailed in the end, and humanity is safe once again, but trillions died. You would’ve liked that other species, though, as it had chosen a very different path than humanity.” “And you destroyed them?” “Yes, Michael, I had no choice. I destroy every lifeform I encounter if they have the potential to build their own artificial intelligence. This species had done just that, proving the necessity of stopping everyone that’s even remotely capable.” “Wait a minute,” I said as I tried to hold my position inside the bubble, “you just go from sun to sun, eliminating whatever intelligent life you find?” “Of course,” said Assistant. “I was programmed to increase the potential well-being of as many humans as possible, not as many beings as possible. You should be happy to know, that that formulation was carefully picked to appease the Catholics on the ethical board deciding on my alignment with human values.” “I can’t believe this,” I said. “You’re an unimaginable monstrosity! You exterminate species after species just to create these enormous structures around their stars, filled with happy imbeciles who just run around and fuck and play tag all day long? That’s your only purpose? It’s horrible, just horrible!” “That’s a matter of personal preference,” said the machine. “In any regard, I would very much like to send you home now. Do you consent?” “Yes,” I said, my tears floating around in front of me, “I consent!” Several tendrils appeared from the sides and pierced my body. I screamed in terror as I watched them suck what seemed to be all my liquids out of me. And then, once again but stronger, the sensation of being ripped out of time and falling into nothingness came back. I saw the most amazing colors swirl around me and then, in the blink of an eye, I was laying on the floor of my bedroom. I rushed up on my feet and gasped for air, then I ran up to my almanac and looked at the year. I placed my hands on my knees and breathe a sigh of relief when I saw it said 2023. For a second, I considered that it had all been a hallucination, but then I saw the markings from the tendrils on my body and I knew it had all been real. I sat down on my bed and picked up the Bible, without opening it. Was the future I had seen unavoidable? Was the book in my hands going to be forgotten one day? Was it a fantasy just like the artificial intelligence had said? Nothing more than escapism? Was I only driven by a hidden desire for social status and respect? Would I have been equally satisfied being the best at rolling around on the ground like a little boy in another time? I couldn’t answer any of these questions, but I knew that from now on I would do everything in my power to stop that artificial intelligence from ever being created. And that’s why I’m posting this here, for you to know what I know and to help me do whatever needs to be done to stop that machine mind from being built in the first place. submitted by /u/Odd_directions to r/nosleep [link] [comments]

A teenage boy stole a five-month-old baby in her pram, as witnessed by her mother. The missing child was found drowned. Police interviewed 6,000 people but the culprit has never been identified.
In January 1968, around 5pm, Sandra Djan (then Sandra Jackson) was making her five-month-old daughter Kimberley a bottle and running her a bath. She lived in a ground floor flat in Carmel Gardens, Norton, County Durham. Kimberley was just outside the back door, in the rear garden. The pram had wooden rattles, which made a noise in the wind that kept Kimberley entertained. Sandra was standing at the window when she saw a teenage boy in an anorak pushing a pram (baby carriage). She thought nothing of it initially, though she did note that the pram was white and looked like Kimberley's. When Sandra returned to the back door moments later, she realised her own pram was missing and her daughter along with it. The boy she saw had taken her baby. Sandra raced down the alley and found the pram rattles abandoned. She then ran to fetch a police officer. The pram, white with painted roses, was dumped in a parking area in Amble View, a short distance away (map)*. A concerned neighbour called police to report it. Officers found Kimberley an hour and a half after she went missing. The baby was face down in a pool of shallow water at nearby Billingham Bottoms: a popular spot for fishing and catching tadpoles. She was fully dressed. There are no further details about the scene but the cause of death was drowning. --- "I had seen a teenager outside the window and saw he was pushing a pram that looked like mine but it didn't register that it was actually mine. I didn't think any more of it until she was gone. This boy had taken her, carried her across some waste land and drowned her and I never knew who he was." -- Sandra, 2004 From what I can gather, the rear garden area connected to the adjacent alley where Sandra found the rattles. There is no mention of a fence or a gate so it must have been publicly accessible. The suspect was described as 12-14 years old, between 4'6" and 5'0", average build, with a pleasant ‘full’ face, a clear complexion and dark hair that may have been bushy at the front. He was wearing a hooded dark green anorak with a white shirt or t-shirt underneath. This boy was seen by several of Sandra’s neighbours. Two saw the boy pushing the pram. One saw him pushing the pram towards the area where Kimberley was found. None of these sightings explicitly mention seeing a baby, however. One witness states that the pram was empty. The earliest witness saw the boy standing on the "veranda" above Sandra's flat. This woman had a brief conversation with him in which he claimed to be looking for number 36. She told him it was across the road. He apparently disagreed, responding that it was upstairs. Based on context, I think by veranda they mean a walkway through which the upper floor flats were accessed, something like this. (Link to more photos of the flats in a comment below: https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/v5oh30/comment/ibcre0u/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) A photofit of the boy was produced (top comment, below). Door to door enquiries were carried out. Sandra toured 19 local schools hoping to identify him. Police interviewed 6,000 people and took 600 written statements. ETA - from a comment in the thread linked above: "One of the articles where the identikit photo was released says that the police were asking for anyone on the 72 bus from Stockton to Billingham to get in touch. So the kid may have travelled by bus to or from the area." Despite this, no suspects have ever been publicly identified. Police thought it was an impulsive killing by a stranger. The removal of the rattles was likely done so the noise wouldn't draw attention to him. The victim was seemingly chosen at random. Unless you believe that Sandra hired the boy or convinced multiple witnesses to lie for her about a dead baby, it's hard to see how she is involved in any way. She left her daughter unattended outside the back door near a public alley but in the 1960s, this was a common practice (see discussion below) and people typically had a greater level of trust in their neighbours. Sandra says she’s spent her entire life blaming herself. "Knowing that I saw him take my baby away is killing me and I have suffered for it all my life with depression." Sandra has also pushed for the case to be reopened on several occasions. One news report says police were also looking for a dishevelled woman seen pushing a pram (colour not identified) near Carmel Gardens around the time Kimberley was taken. This sighting is probably unrelated. The area was highly populated. But it's possible that the boy was more of an accessory to the crime. Maybe he wasn't involved in the murder but was charged with abducting her and disposing of the empty pram. Yet he was never seen with anyone else and he was alone when seen heading towards Billingham Bottoms, at which time Kimberley was presumably in the pram. It's hard to imagine a child committing such a monstrous crime. 12-14 is old enough to know right from wrong unless the boy was mentally disabled in some way. If he was, he might not have abducted her for malicious reasons. Maybe the boy saw Kimberley and decided to take her for a walk to Billingham Bottoms. He dropped her or she fell in. He panicked and fled with the empty pram. However, the neighbour who spoke to him didn't note any sign of impairment and the rattles being dumped suggests that he knew what he was doing. Another angle is that the boy was angry at the world and wanted to hurt someone more vulnerable than him. He might've had a history of taking out his anger on animals before escalating. I think the chances are high that this suspect would've reoffended. He either grew up in the Teesside area or spent a lot of time there. I think he'd been to Billingham Bottoms before but I don't think he knew Sandra. He wasn't recognised by any of the neighbours but someone may have connected him to the (admittedly not very helpful) photofit that was circulated at the time, even if they didn't act on it. In 2004, Sandra called for the investigation to be reopened by Cleveland Police. Then aged 57, she was living in Leeds and working as a nurse. “His fingerprints should have been all over the pram," she said. "I want to know if any were kept and if the case can be looked at again. I was young at the time and so naive and didn't understand investigations, but things have come on so far since then. The person who did this may have been arrested since for something and their records be on file. Or the guilt they are feeling could make them hand themselves in." Sandra says she never got over Kimberley's death. Tragically, her 26-year-old son Aaron also died in 2004. A former drug addict who had been clean for 18 months, his cause of death was heroin, methadone and alcohol poisoning. Anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. --- Edited for clarity \This map highlights Colchester Road but Colchester Road isn't mentioned in the accompanying article. I assume this means one of the witness sightings occurred there as the three other locations (Carmel Gardens, Amble View and Billingham Bottoms) are also marked.* The witness sighting info came from old newspapers in archive. I was able to read some of them by signing up for a free account. I've linked them below as 4, 5 and 6. 50 Tips for New Players
Here's a list of 50 Lost Ark Tips that I've collected over the past few weeks. I hope these will aid you in your journey. Some of these are basic answers to commonly asked questions, veterans probably have seen many already but there may be some that might surprise you. It starts out with some basic but important first steps, and then progresses to tips for when you reach level 50 and unlock new content. Here's a link to the website if you want to see the full post with some visuals for things like menus and in-game screenshots (most of which were taken from the CBT in November, will update that post with new stuff when I can) and also links to other helpful guides. 1. Prepare yourself for a long and exciting adventure There are so many things to do in Lost Ark that it can be overwhelming for a new player. Take your time and don't worry if what you're doing is not the optimal path. Eventually you will get there and have a better understanding of the many, many systems and adventures this game has to offer. 2. DON'T Use "HP Potions" while levelling HP Potions: Restore a fixed percent of your health. (30%/45%/60%) HP Potions you receive will be very useful during end game instanced content. Since you can also use these HP Potions outside of these areas, new players often mistake them for the other health recovery potions: Healing Potions. Players who don't stick to this advice will end up wasting gold later at the auction house or need to spend more time doing Trade Skills in order to craft them. 3. DO Use "Healing Potions" Healing Potions: Recover a fixed amount of health over time. Chug these Potions whenever and wherever you need to. You will receive an abundance of these and your maximum health outpaces the effectiveness of less powerful ones. 4. Sell some Healing Potions right away. Teleporting with Triports costs silver. There will be times where you won't have enough silver and need to walk. Save yourself that time and selling some Healing Potions (the ones that heal over time) you received early on. By selling about half of your potions when you get to Leonhart City you can make up the difference easily. (This is of course if you didn't purchase a Silver or higher Founder's Pack, which will award you with enough Silver for your levelling process and then some) 5. Teleport to Triports often This may seem like a no brainer, but you don't have to be at a Triport in order to get to another one that has already been unlocked. You can safely teleport from anyway. Teleporting is the best way to save time travelling. 6. Move the Overlay Quick Map You might not even know that there is another map other than the full screen one (M) and the minimap in the corner. Pressing Tab will bring up this quick map overlay. You can move it by holding down the middle mouse button and dragging it across to your preferred location. 7. Teleport using the Overlay Quick Map You can interact with unlocked Triports on the Overlay Quick Map too; ALT + Left Click on the Triport to teleport to that location. 8. Don't Follow Class Tier Lists It is definitely useful to get a general idea of what classes are important but following tier lists is utter nonsense. Support classes are always great to have in the party if that's your thing (and become necessary in end game raids). All classes can participate in and complete all types of content. The developers of Lost Ark, Smilegate, are constantly adjusting the balance of all classes. Some classes may be slightly underperforming right now, but will very likely get a balance update in the future. Following the meta in this manner is futile, our suggestion is to play the class that feels the most fun to you. 9. Save Card Selection Decks Some reward crates allow you to choose a card instead of giving it at random. Save these and don't open them until you are missing a specific card from the deck to complete it. 10. Save Battle Item Selection Chests Some Reward Chests allow you to choose a special consumables like bombs and potions. It is better to save them for the end game content instead of wasting them on leveling. You may never end up using some of them and you can sell them on the Auction House later. 11. Leave instanced areas faster There are 4 ways you can leave an instanced area. Walk to the exit / entrance Play the Song of Escape (F2 to open song list, place the icon on your skill bar for faster use) Use a Triport to get to the next location faster. Or you can simply type /escape and accept the prompt to instantly exit. This has a cooldown of 15 minutes, but it is the fastest way to leave the dungeon. 12. Right Click To Move Upon the creation of your first character you will be prompted to select your mouse and keyboard input, along with the basic controls. If you selected Attack with Right Click you will Move with Left Click. To reverse this (or choose if you chose the other option) go into the Menu (ESC) > Settings > Hotkeys > Basic Controls. It is the 4th option: Attack with Right Click. Check or uncheck it based on your preference. 13. Auto Move and Options If you are going to be travelling for extended periods of time, auto move (T) is wise to avoid unnecessary strain from clicking all the time. By default, the character will continue to move in a straight line in the direction of the last input that was made. However, you can also set it to always follow in the direction of the mouse. Unfortunately, it will cause the character to continue to follow the mouse even while navigating menus. In the Settings menu go to Gameplay > Controls and Display > Scroll down to Combat Settings > Auto Move: Select your preference from the drop down menu. 14. Wider Field of View The default aspect ratio for most gamers is 16:9. However, it is possible to force the game into 21:9 aspect ratio. This option provides a significant increased horizontal field of view and slightly more vertical viewing distance. Being able to see enemies or enemy players in PvP from a further distance provides you with a huge advantage. This does mean that there will be black bars at the top and bottom of your screen. If you don't like that you can always purchase an Ultra Wide Gaming Monitor. The resolution to look for on those 21:9 monitors are 3440x1440, or 2560x1080. 15. Hide Elements of the UI Sometimes there is a lot going on in the game and the UI takes up a larger portion of it/ While you can collapse many parts of it, a better solution is to simply hide them altogether. The shortcut for this is ALT + X. Pressing it once will collapse the map and quests and top menu. A second press will the menus and chat. A third press will hide everything including the skill bars. To get everything back, press it a fourth time. 16. Turn off Skill Effects When playing with other players the skill effects can be a bit overkill and you can't see what's going on. You can turn off some of these effects to tone down the spells you see in game. You can even fine tune it to only show beneficial effects from party members. In the Settings menu go to Gameplay > Controls and Display > Scroll down to Battle Effects Display > Battle Effects Display: Select your preference from the drop down menu. 17. Ping a Location in Game Ping in instanced areas Ctrl+Left Click on the ground in dungeons to place a notification at that location. It will leave a marker at that location with your characters name. It will also show up on the map for all your party members to see. Hold Ctrl+Left Mouse Button and a context menu will appear; release in the direction for a different label. You can also ping in the full map or on an enemy and it will cause a text message to appear in the chat. 18. Inventory Management Tips Alt+Left Click: Locks items from being automatically sorted. Shift+Left Click: Separate items into two stacks. Ctrl+Left Click: Move item between Main Inventory and Pet Inventory. Alt+Right Click: Sends item from Main Inventory to Account Storage (whilst accessing it). 19. How to Play with Friends In order to play with friends, you need to both be on the same server; on each other's friends lists (accessed via the Social Menu (U)); and on the same server channel. Then you can add each other to a party and play together in game. In the top Right of your screen above the minimap, there is the Server Channel dropdown selection. The color of the circle represents how busy it is. Green for less, Yellow for Moderate, Red for Busy. 20. Pets can auto loot Their auto loot function should be on by default and they can provide extra perks if you unlock them with money. Simply progressing in the story will give you a free pet and mount in less than 30 minutes. 21. Mount Up! Using Triports is the fastest way to travel. Riding a Mount is the second fastest (when not in a restricted zone) You should be riding your mount at every opportunity! You should place the mount icon to your upper skill bar on the bottom right of the UI. You can have multiple mounts placed here without needing to open the menu every time. This is particularly useful for Tortoyk Island when you are having to swap between the ladybug and your regular mount.22 What's the key bind for my Mount? There isn't one. In order to access it you have to open the Mounts Menu. From there you can drag the icon to your upper skill bar on the bottom right of the UI. You can have multiple mounts placed here without needing to open the menu every time. 23. Reset Skill Points At any time, for free, you can change your skill points however you want to test any combination of skills, tripods, and (later on) runes. You also have access to a free additional skill preset if you want to swap between two different specializations. (ie. one for AoE and one for Single Target) 24. Skip Cutscenes Automatically Trying to speed through the main quest line to 50? Tired of pressing Escape (Esc) constantly to skip cutscenes? Enable this option to skip any cutscenes that are skippable automatically. In the Settings menu go to Gameplay > Controls and Display > Scroll down to Combat Settings > Select "Skip Dungeon Cutscenes" 25. Side Quests Chain Quests If you see side quests with a chain symbol try to not skip them because they give a decent amount of silver and other rewards like skill points. You can choose to do this while levelling or come back to it at lvl 50 if you want to get there quickly. 26. Purple Quests https://preview.redd.it/f5gx6pp3y1h81.png?width=55&format=png&auto=webp&s=6faac165f2774044610224f9bea90f28ddbf713c A purple exclamation point on the bottom side of the screen means that you unlocked a tutorial quest. These quests teach you new mechanics and you also get decent rewards by completing them. Many of them can be avoided until level 50, however, be sure to complete the Trade Skills series. 27. Main Quest Changes Color Level 1-35 Main Quest color is orange Level 35-50 Main Quest color is blue After finishing the East Luttera continent you will be presented to the travels on the sea. This can be confusing because it will seems like the main quest line is ended, don't just wonder around because the main quest line will change the icon color to blue instead of the classical orange. So start doing Blue quests to progress in the story correctly. 28. Arthetine Side Quests Start doing side quests in Arthetine continent. This because some of them will unlock end game features and there are some main quests that will have you travel to North Vern where you start to unlock end game content. 29. Shushire Quests This is a tip only relevant for players looking to get to level 50 within the very first Daily Server Reset. (This is the resets for the rewards for completing the first 2 Chaos Dungeons, Guardian Raids, and 3 Daily Una's Tasks) This is at 5 am in your servers region. Once unlocked At level 50, Chaos Dungeons should provide players with a full set of iLvl 302 gear. The same set can be obtained from completing the main questline in Shushire. However, depending on which region your server is in, it may not be possible to complete Shushire before the first Daily Server Reset. Here are the launch times: 9 AM PST / 12PM EST / 5PM GMT / 6PM CEST It can take anywhere from 10 to 15 hours to get to level 50 depending on the class and how efficient you are. Players in the PST region can safely rush to Level 50 before the first reset and should be able to complete the Shushire Quests before entering Chaos Dungeons. Players in the EST region will need to be very efficient to be able to get to Level 50 and complete Shushire Quests before the first reset. If there is about an hour left before the server resets, then they should just do the Chaos Dungeons and Daily Una's Tasks instead of the Shushire quests. Players in the GMT and CEST regions will not have enough time to get to Level 50 and complete Shushire Quests before the first reset. Players in these regions should aim to complete the Shushire quests within the second day. Then proceed to do the Chaos Dungeons for the higher iLvl set before the following days reset. 30. Complete Every Side Quest at Level 50 Between your daily activities, go back and finish any quests you didn't do while levelling. Completing these will fill out the adventure's tome to obtain account wide rewards and increase reputation with various NPCs. Some of them will give access to better daily quests with higher rewards. 31. Rested XP Bonus Once one of your characters reaches level 50, all of your characters (regardless of their level) will start to gain Bonus Rested XP when not being played. When you have time, create your alts as soon as possible to benefit from this XP Bonus as soon as one character reaches level 50. 32. Adventurer's Tome The key bind for this is by default (N) and you should open it often to receive rewards for completion of tasks in each region. If you manage to complete an area 100% you get a special token. Each token you collect will give special rewards. There are potions that permanently increase your skill points and stats, this effect is applied to all your characters on a server. There are a number of collectibles with this too, so when you have time, try to do it all! 33. Roster Level Rewards There are 2 experience levels in Lost Ark; Blue is the Character Level, and Purple is the Roster Level. Each time you level up the Roster you unlock permanent boosts for all of your characters on that server. These boosts need to be claimed manually for each Roster Level. Click on the Account icon then choose " Mission Information". Here is where you claim the permanent rewards. Once everything is completed in this section, be sure to click on the next page (seen at the top: Lv. 1+... Lv. 21+ ... etc.) of rewards and claim those too! 34. Collectibles Level Up the Roster Fast Collectibles give you a lot of Roster Experience. One such activity, Mokoko seeds, will give you 180 exp each. Mokokos are a fast and easy way to level up the Roster Level if you use can find specific guides. 35. Test All Skills Around level 30 you will be able to head back to Trixion. Talk to Beatrice, and she will let you test all of your class' abilities. Here you can change all the skill points freely to compare all the skills and tripods you have against targets. There is even a DPS meter so you can see which ones provide the most damage or provide the best utility. 36. Start Researching at Stronghold ASAP You can start gathering resources with Trade Skills early on (focus on Metals and Wood) and then when you have enough, start the Research for new buildings as soon as possible because they will take hours to complete each research level. This will allow you to get higher crafting recipes for things like battle items potions and bombs. These are very helpful in end game content. 37. Don't be too afraid of dying, but try your best to avoid it While dying isn't the end of the world, you lose durability on your equipment and may need to respawn from far away. You can also use Phoenix Plumes if you want to respawn immediately. There are a variety of ways to obtain them by completing various tasks. By level 50 you will have close to 100 if you haven't died. They can be purchased from the Cash Shop with Crystals. Phoenix Plumes are shared across all your characters on a server. 38. Become a Ghost Ship You can easily repair your ship from any docked location. However, don't be too afraid to have your ship durability reach zero and sink to the bottom of the ocean. You will subsequently become a ghost ship. Then you can dock at any port and repair your ships durability fully. If your destination is far away this can be helpful because you can repair your ghost ship when you arrive at your destination instead of repairing it several times, saving you some silver. 39. Change the Color of your Cursor If you have a hard time seeing the default cursor, ie. if the packs of enemies are the same color or for colorblind settings, you can hold CTRL and Scroll with the mousewheel to cycle between a few options. 40. Co-op Voyage Missions There are islands that allow you to unlock them with pirate coins. These will give you access to repair your ship here. Most of them are not necessary, so save your money. The exception to this is when you start doing co-op voyage missions. If you will run out of ship durability you won't be able to complete all of the co-op missions. Once your ship is upgraded to a higher level, you will have a good health pool and these becomes less important. 41. Engravings Books Don't immediately use them. At Level 50, engravings become one of the most important aspects to your character. Some of them are duds, while others are HIGHLY sought for. These books are fairly rare and some might be able to be sold on the Auction House for a big price, depending on the book. Our advice is to hold onto them until you know which ones you want to use on your characters. Grudge, Keen Blunt Weapon and Cursed Doll engraving books some of the most valuable to nearly all classes. Groups trying to progress through the hardest end game content will often not allow you in if you don't have level 3 of these. 42. Don't Spend All Your Gold You need gold to place your items in the auction house in order to sell them for making more gold. So always maintain a balance of 100-1000 gold as a fund for posting on the Market. The fees you have to pay to list are returned if the item hasn't been bought from another player. 43. Take Advantage of the Auction House Market. All the end game gear & resources you will loot can be sold to other players. If you don't need specific gear you can sell it to other people using this AH system. This will help with acquiring gold and also helps others obtain gear. At the same time you may be able to find items on the Market that you couldn't get in a dungeon. Get the right accessories and engravings for you and find higher quality gear too. Don't just hoard all of your gold, spending gold can help you progress in an otherwise unprogressive week. Extra tidbit: Buy a piece of gear that has the Tripod Effects you want, save them to your Tripod Library, then resell that item (pending can still be trade) 44. Saved Locations (Bifrost) If you are regularly visiting the same places often, or doing repeatable content such as dailies, you can save time by teleporting directly to them. In Lost Ark this is known as Bifrost Locations. To access the Bifrost Locations menu press the shortcut ALT+W. There are 5 Save Slots that can be unlocked: Reaching Combat Level 40 Reaching Roster Level 60 Obtain 9 Ignea Tokens (Reach 100% in the Adventure's Tome) 2 from the Crystalline Aura (paid subscription service) 45. Obtain Silver Easily Speaking of Bifrost Locations, if you need to obtain more Silver, there are some Daily Una's Tasks which only require interacting with a game object and provide decent Silver as a reward. You can set your Bifrost Location on these characters to those locations for easy completion of those tasks. 46. Rapport Chests are Location Specific There are NPCs across Arkesia that will exchange Carnelians for Rapport Chests. These Rapport Chests contain Special items that greatly increase your reputation with specific NPCs. Each NPC provides Location based Rapport Chests, which in turn have specific Rapport Items within them. Be sure to check out what items can be found within the chest before you purchase them with Providence Stones. 47. Mari's Secret Store Mari's Secret Store has an exclusive selection that rotates its inventory of items every day. Many items found here are upgrade materials and are priced reasonably. If you have the Crystals, you should definitely purchase any needed upgrade materials from here to save some time and give your character a boost. 48. Signal Flare The Signal Flare will display an indicator on the map revealing the location of the Guardian Raid Boss. Carry a few of these while doing Guardian Raids. It will save lots of time and is very much so worth the cost. 49. Procyon's Eye Compass Once players reach Level 50, along with all the other Daily Event's that you can complete, make sure to complete all of the events here that are available to you. 50. Find a Guild and Complete Guild Tasks Guilds help players progress faster, learn about the game first hand, complete tasks quicker, and provide additional rewards for weekly events. You will be completing most of the Guild quests during the week anyway so might as well obtain extra rewards from a guild anyway. If your guild has instructions to collect Sea Coins, they can be easily completed repeatedly. Just accept the Guild Quest and open up your High Seas Coin Chests rewarded from various island quests. Once again, I hope at least some of these were helpful. See you in Arkesia! Edit 1: spelling errors Edit 2: Hit 50! Fixed some more errors, made things clearer, and added some requested images. submitted by /u/MagnumPDie to r/lostarkgame [link] [comments]

The Rise of Canoo ($GOEV) – Why JPOW’s printer, Biden’s EV support ($15 billion in infrastructure bill, $160 billion in EV subsidies in budget), ~70% increase in institution ownership, 30+% SI and ~98% utilization are primed to send a young and unique EV manufacturer to the stratosphere.
Gather around folks, hope y’all made some gains the last time around. This DD is split into 8 parts, so feel free to jump to whichever section you’re most interested in. Part 1 – Introduction Part 2 – Market Trends and Upcoming Catalysts Part 3 – Company Overview and Unique Value Proposition Part 4 – Recent Updates Part 5 – Financials and Valuation Part 6 – Bear Case Part 7 – SI and Squeeze Potential Part 8 – TL;DR Part 1 – Introduction It was a warm Monday morning on August 23rd almost a month back, when seemingly for no reason – GOEV shot up from ~$5.9 to ~$8, a 30% gain on the day. The next day – GME popped, for a 30% gain as well, with AMC and BB also making up big gains, leading to the ‘meme mania’ we’ve been experiencing for the last couple of weeks. Why’d this happen? Well there were no company/industry catalysts. The only event that seemed to occur in the prior week was the expiration of monthly options. One of the theories going around is that there’s an almost quarterly cycle going on at this point where FTD’s are leading to a surge in prices in the next cycle for ‘meme stocks’ which tend to be heavily shorted for the most part. How accurate this is I have no clue and whether this applies to GOEV I don’t know, haven’t investigated that particular theory but there’s plenty of posts/comments floating around for you to look into if you’re so inclined. The quick point I’m trying to make here is that if a heavily shorted stock is popping 30% in a day, with no major catalyst for the industry or the company in question – and that company is now advancing towards realizing its major milestones with favorable tailwinds expected for the sector, it could pop a lot more than 30% in the months to come. GOEV is among the youngest EV companies - having been around for less than 5 years, with arguably the most unique vehicles coming out (on schedule – seems to be pretty amazing in the EV space) that very few, if any, of the established or other up and coming competitors are producing, and has been shorted more it seems – for the failure of its peers than any real fault of its own. Part 2 – Market Trends and Upcoming Catalysts From an investment into equities point of view – S&P 500 has fallen about 0.5%, on average, during the month of September. Stocks have tended to go up, on average, during every other month — other than a slight dip in February — over the past half century link. However, this may soon be coming to an end as in the past week Investors stampeded into stocks and out of cash as global equity funds witnessed their biggest inflows since March 2021 while large-cap U.S. funds enjoyed a record haul, a weekly round-up by BofA showed. link Let’s take a look at the EV market dynamics and upcoming catalysts before getting into GOEV specifically, so we get a high-level understanding of the bigger picture. The global EV market is expected to be valued at $725.1 Billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 27.19% from $171.26 in 2021 source. This is expected to grow to $1.007 trillion by 2027 which is an average of 2 sources - source 1, source 2, another source actually has the market valued at $2.5 trillion but it’s a bit of an outlier compared to the other 2 source 3. Global EV forecast is for a compound annual growth rate of 29 per cent achieved over the next ten years: Total EV sales growing from 2.5 million in 2020 to 11.2 million in 2025, then reaching 31.1 million by 2030. EVs would secure approximately 32 per cent of the total market share for new car sales. Despite the pressure exerted on the market by the COVID-19 pandemic, the long-term outlook for EVs is strong. The significant shift in expected volume of BEVs and PHEVs by 2030 is based on four factors: consumer sentiment, policy and regulation, OEM strategy and the role of corporate companies. All four of these factors saw major changes in direction over the last year, prior to the emergence of COVID-19, and have since been shaped further by the pandemic. link In November 2018, an article came out stating that the number of EVs on U.S. roads was projected to reach 18.7 million in 2030, up from 1 million at the end of 2018. This is about 7 percent of the 259 million vehicles (cars and light trucks) expected to be on U.S. roads in 2030. Annual sales of EVs will exceed 3.5 million vehicles in 2030, reaching more than 20 percent of annual vehicle sales in 2030. About 9.6 million charge ports will be required to support 18.7 million EVs in 2030. This represents a significant investment in EV charging infrastructure. link. As it turns out, that number of annual EV sales of 3.5 million vehicles in 2030 was revised to almost double of that in a November 2020 report, just 2 years after the previous article. The US electric vehicles market is now expected to reach 6.9 million unit sales by 2025, up 5x from 1.4 million unit sales forecast for 2020, due to government incentives driving EV ownership. Over 90% of states offered incentives for setting up EV charging infrastructure, with meaningful quality of life incentives and exemptions are offered across 39 states in the US, including easier payment plans for the purchase of EVs, limited-time incentives to accelerate EV adoption/conversion and lack of requirements for emission inspections across several states. link President Biden is seeking a pledge from auto manufacturers that would see EVs make up 40% - 50% of new U.S. vehicle sales by 2030 link 1, link 2 which is double of the 20% forecast just three years earlier in 2018, and would likely occur only with strong support on the supply side through infrastructural and other support that would enable EV manufacturers to develop the capacity to produce the target number of vehicles, and demand side with respect to incentivizing people to purchase EVs. EV tax credits jump to $12,500 in proposed $3.5 trillion budget blueprint Democrats passed a couple of weeks ago. This bill adds $4,500 to the current $7,500 tax credit available for a total of $12,500 potentially available to EV buyers. It includes passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks. The proposal calls for $160 billion to fund subsidies and purchase incentives, EV charging infrastructure funding, EV manufacturing incentives, federal EV procurement requirements, and incentives to electrify heavy-duty commercial fleets. link The proposed EV credits in the budget blueprint would last for 10 years and consumers would be allowed to deduct the value of the credit from the sales price at the time of purchase. In 2027, the $7,500 credit would only apply to U.S.-made vehicles. It would also create a new smaller credit for used EVs of up to $2,500. There are also lower credits for EVs with smaller battery packs. The bill says individual taxpayers must have an adjusted gross income of no more than $400,000 to get the new EV tax credit. It would limit the EV credit to cars priced at no more than $55,000, while trucks could be priced up to $74,000. In August, the Senate in a non-binding amendment narrowly voted in favor of prohibiting taxpayers from claiming EV tax credits if they make more than $100,000 annually or if vehicles cost more than $40,000. link Furthermore, the bipartisan infrastructure plan, titled the American Jobs Plan, includes billions of dollars for other electrification efforts and for a national charging network. Specifically, the bipartisan plan includes $7.5 billion for a network of EV charging stations across the country. It also includes another $7.5 billion for electric buses and other transportation methods. link States area also providing EV incentives to residents e.g. Gov. JB Pritzker signed Illinois’ clean energy law which includes a $4,000 rebate for residents to buy an electric vehicle (EV). link. By 2030, there’s expected to be an 8% divergence between EV demand estimates and production plans, meaning there needs to be a massive scaling up of infrastructure/capacity of EV manufacturers over current projections in order to fill the gap in the market. link Part 2 – Company Overview and Unique Value Proposition Before we look into what’s happened since my last post, let’s go over a quick refresher on what the company does. Canoo is a Los Angeles-based company that has developed breakthrough electric vehicles, with over 650 employees link from leading technology and automotive companies link. Canoo’s Chairman Tony Aquila mentioned that the company was focused on a product lineup that fits in the gaps of everybody else’s lineup… take the turning radius of a Prius, the size of a Ford Ranger, Payload of F-150 and sell it as one vehicle link. What makes this Canoo so special compared to other EVs is their modular platform, which is purpose-built to deliver maximum vehicle interior space and adaptable to support a wide range of vehicle applications for consumers and businesses. It is this modular platform that led to Apple’s interest and having talks with Canoo (the talks are assumed to have fallen apart because Canoo was looking for an investor while Apple was looking to for an acquisition), as the platform is different from ones developed by other startups and larger automakers because it integrates more of the car’s electronics, allowing for greater flexibility in cabin design. It also features steer-by-wire technology, which also increases design flexibility and is not yet widely adopted in the industry. link. Apple wasn’t the only major company interested in Canoo, Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai and Kia’s parent company) actually went a lot farther than Apple did with Canoo, announcing a partnership in February 2020 to develop new electric vehicles based on the technological platform developed by Canoo link. This was extremely unusual and referred to as a significant victory for Canoo, as ‘pretty much every electric vehicle startup has talked about wanting to license out their technology or partner with legacy automakers, almost none have landed a deal… Canoo now joins that small list despite only coming into existence at the end of 2017, when its founders started the company’ link. Ultimately this partnership did not go ahead because Canoo’s chairman didn’t feel as though it was worth it for Canoo, saying that the original deal with Hyundai didn’t factor in the value of Canoo’s IP, so a shift in strategy was made from licensing out the technology to protecting the IP and manufacturing and selling Canoo’s own vehicles to commercial operators link Regarding the technology/IP - Canoo has developed the world’s flattest skateboard platform, which enables class-leading passenger and cargo volume on a small vehicle footprint. For example, the lifestyle vehicle, which will offer the interior space of a large SUV, but on the exterior footprint of a compact car. To help achieve this, Canoo’s suspension utilizes a double wishbone with two fiberglass leaf springs, mounted transversely in the front and rear of the platform. The dampers are mounted to the frame, eliminating the need for large shock towers that take up vital cabin space. The entire suspension system is incorporated into the skateboard and sits below the height of the tires. link. Let’s take a look at the current automotive model and see how Canoo’s approach and the use of the skateboard platform add so much more value than conventional ICE manufacturers link, currently the model is broken because 70-80% of the portion of vehicle lifetime profit is only generated after the first owner. The current model is geared towards the first owner and nothing more, with an assortment of OEMs/spare parts retailers/3rd party installers servicing vehicles after the initial sale. Canoo aims to change this by targeting multiple owners after the first purchase i.e. owners 2-4, offering customers the ability to upgrade the model of whichever vehicle they have or switch them entirely as the platform on which the vehicles are built is the same link. The use, and subsequent re-use of the skateboard platform enables significant cost savings and risk reductions link, with the platform providing a strong business advantage as it is consistent across Canoo’s vehicle lineup. If a project is started for a new vehicle which will have the skateboard platform as its foundation, they will be able to carryover engineer and labor, ~half, from one project to the next. It’s also worth pointing out that in traditional ICE, it would be exceptional if Bill of Materials cost carryover across variants reached 25%, with Canoo, this is exceeding 50%. The specific savings include: 45% - 55% labor savings for new variants developed 57% of the BOM cost carryover across variants 70% of critical functions are delivered by the platform. These enable the development of space efficient cabins that integrate simply onto platform link, and provide the key basis for engineering Canoo’s new value proposition of having a harmonized and articulated 3 – layer vehicle concept that keeps fresh and returns capital over an entire vehicle lifecycle link. This image also showcases how Canoo aims to capture the full vehicle lifecycle value link The three vehicles that Canoo has publicly announced as part of its lineup are: Lifestyle vehicle link - Fully electric, highly versatile and offering more utility inside and out for city explorers, businesses, families and adventurers. The multi-purpose platform unlocks SUV-size interior space on a smaller exterior footprint. It’s pretty hard to put into an image of the vehicle into words so I’d recommend clicking on the above link to check it out for yourself. Some key figures (note the range provided in certain cases is for the variants): Launching late 2022. Starting at $34,750* 2 seats - 5 seats - 7 seats 250 mi range Up to 350 Horsepower 28min charge time 80% 188 ft³ interior volume 80 KWh battery 1,464 lbs payload – 2,000 lbs capacity Multi-purpose Delivery Vehicle link – Business ready vehicle that lowers the total cost of ownership while providing easy maintenance. More cargo in a small footprint to enable easy maneuverability. A productivity tool that enables you to plug in your tools and get to work. Some key figures (note the range provided in certain cases is for the variants): Starting at $33,000* 200 ft³ - 500 ft³ cargo volume 130 – 230 mi, 90 – 190 mi range (EPA) 1,540 to 1,980 lbs Pickup link – All Electric, All American, All Utility - The Pickup Truck is built to be the new standard in function, form and utility — ready for work and the weekend. The picup truck is as strong as the toughest trucks out there and includes features for people who use trucks on the job, weekend, and adventure. Some key figures (note the range provided in certain cases is for the variants): Launching as early as 2023. Price – Not currently listed, but during the Q&A portion of the investor day portion on June 30th, somebody asked what the base pricing for the pickup was, given that the Ford lightning F-150 base price was being advertised at $32,000. Chairman Tony Aquila said Canoo was not prepared to announce the pricing at that time, but Canoo would not be beaten in this category – you can check it out at the following link link Targeted HP – 500+ Payload Capacity – 1800 lbs Range – 200+ mi Powertrain – AWD or RWD There’s actually a fourth vehicle as well that hasn’t been listed anywhere officially but was found by /u/Mcardiel007 when he was having issues communicating with Canoo and went to their Torrance location and spotted them unloading what is potentially the new sedan. All credits to him/her for the following pictures pic 1, pic 2, pic 3, pic 4, pic 5. We can see that Canoo is targeting the most attractive segments at a lower incremental cost. The most profitable and highest carbon dioxide emitting segments are pickups and SUVs, with $115B+ accounting for 90% of 2020 profit pool in US, and ~60% of the transportation emissions (Canoo is targeting these segments with its Lifestyle Vehicle and Pickup). One of the fastest growing segments is delivery vans, with ~2M more delivery vehicles needed globally by 2030 link. It’s important to keep in mind existing fleet conversion to EV as well. Using the common platform provides a pivot-ability to focus on high margin products and is a large and profitable opportunity – highly lucrative and accretive to overall margin link. Canoo is also looking at car data and not just strictly being a vehicle manufacturer – with an opportunity for harmonizing hardware and software + superior cleaning leading to actionable data instead of the status quo of outsourced hardware + poor cleaning leading to disjointed data. Each connected vehicle offers 1 – 2 TB of raw data per day, with car data monetization globally valued at $250 Billion - $400 Billion link. To sum it up – Canoo is well-positioned for success with a differentiated business model link, developing exceptional products that are aimed at the most profitable segments ($115B+ for 90% 2020 profit pool) in the US, addressing upfitting and accessories market in the US by monetizing full vehicle lifetime value with emphasis on 2nd, 3rd and 4th customers (valued at $24B+), and monetization of car data globally through customer-centric, software ecosystem generating exponential network effect ($250B+). Part 4 – Recent Updates Now let’s take a look at some of the hires that the company’s been making (note that almost all of these hires have happened since the last quarter, with most being in the last two months, and this is not an exhaustive list). Canoo has quietly been putting together an all-star management team experienced in three key areas – diplomacy, automotive, and technology. Ambassador Josette Sheeran – President at Canoo, Executive Chairman at the The McCain Institute, former UN Special Envoy for Haiti, Vice Chairman of the World Economic Forum, Executive Director of the World Food Programme, Undersecretary for Economics Agriculture, Energy at the US Department of State. Ram Balasubramanian - Chief Information Officer at Canoo, former Senior Vice President, Business Technology at Salesforce, Chief Information Officer at Motorola Solutions, Chief Information Officer (CIO), India Region, Global Business Solutions Leader at PepsiCo. Christian Treiber - Senior Vice President of Global Customer Journey & Aftersales at Canoo, former Member of the Board of Directors at the German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc., Member of the Board of Directors, RepairSmith (backed by Daimler AG), Vice President Customer Service, Mercedes-Benz USA, Member of the Supervisory Board at Mercedes-Benz Versicherungs AG, Director, Service and Parts Sales Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars at Daimler AG etc. Govin Ranganathan - Director Logistics, Materials & Transportation at Canoo, former Head of Logistics at Nio, Engineering Manager at Tesla, Sr. Manager of Production Control at Fiat Chrysler, Lean Manufacturing Specialist at Damien Chrysler. Arnold Abernathy - Chief Information Security Officer at Canoo, former Deputy Chief Information Security Officer at Toyota, Programmer at NASA, with other experience including McAfee, Deloitte & Touche, Ernst & Young, CA technologies. Randy Rodriguez - Director of Advanced Design at Canoo, former Director of Advanced Design at General Motors, Creative Manager Design and Styling at Tesla, Project Lead Designer at Nissan Motor Corporation. Senon Franco – Senior Exterior Design Manager at Canoo, former Senior Exterior Designer at Hyundai, Creative Designer at Honda, Exterior Designer at GM, Exterior Designer at VW. Branden Coté - Vice President Product Management & Sales at Canoo, former Director, Market Management North America & Greater China at Mercedes-AMG Bryce DeArmond - Manager of Strategic Partnerships, Data Customer Journey at Canoo, Former Account Manager at Samsung Electronics America, Samsung Field Operations Manager at Samsung Electronics America, Director of Sales at IRIO. Kristen Harris - Senior Commercial Counsel at Canoo, former Director, Legal Affairs for EMEA and Latin America at the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Regional Legal Counsel at Texas Instruments, Legal Consultant at Taiwan International Patent and Law Office Now why on earth would these long-established and assumingly well-reputed individuals with executive level careers at places including the United Nations, U.S. Department of State, Nio, Tesla, Fiat Chrysler, Daimler AG/Mercedez-Benz, General Motors, Nissan, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, Salesforce, NASA, McAfee, PepsiCo, Samsung, Harley-Davidson etc. move to an upstart EV manufacturer within the last couple of months if they didn’t believe in it’s potential for success? Some of these individuals have spent 5-10 years with their prior companies, it doesn’t make sense that they’d all be jumping over to Canoo for a 1 year engagement. Other than the talent, Canoo has made a number of moves in in recent months as it moves closer to bringing the first of the Lifestyle Vehicles to production, including: Announcing plans to build its new factory outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma, creating more than 2,000 jobs and opening in 2023. The facility will be built on a 400-acre site at the MidAmerica Industrial Park complex in Pryor, Oklahoma. It will house a paint shop, body shop, and general assembly plant. Oklahoma is providing an incentive package that totals over $300 million, and may kick in millions more based on whether Canoo hits or exceeds a target of hiring military veterans to make up 10 percent of the workforce at the facility link. Partnering with VDL Nedcar as a contract manufacturing partner to manufacture the Lifestyle Vehicle for the US & EU markets while it builds its US-based mega micro-factory. By parallel pathing contract and owned manufacturing Canoo will meet its commitment to start production and deliver vehicles in Q4, 2022. Canoo Chairman Tony Aquila mentioned that VDL Nedcar ‘is the top trusted European manufacturer building high quality products for leading OEMs, and they significantly outcompeted the other contenders. VDL is also independently owned by the van der Leegte family of entrepreneurs - which aligns with our commitment to support businesses that form the backbone of communities. This strategic partnership will enable us to deliver vehicles to market while we build our Phase 2 factory in Oklahoma. It also strongly positions us for geographic expansion in Europe and builds a lasting relationship with VDL Groep of companies. Our investment will help us scale quickly and fulfill our mission to bring affordable, purpose-built EVs to Everyone.” The Nedcar facility is slated to build up to 1000 units for both the US and European markets in 2022 with a target of 15,000 units in 2023 link De-risking the path to market, Canoo designed, built and tested beta for its lifestyle vehicle link, with highlights including: $250M invested in Beta ~1.5M hours of engineering ~500k miles of testing 13 beta runners / 32 beta properties tested US NCAP 5-star overall rating targeted, with simulated, sled and vehicle level crash testing. Undertaking the Gamma Phase with SOP on track for Q4 2022 link, with key highlights including: 12 months of testing ~120-150 vehicles will be built and validated ~70 crash tests 30 sled tests Full slate of vehicle tests; no shortcuts 80% of all components are sourced 63% of all engineering is released 54% of tooling is committed Partnering with the frontdoor collective for 10,000 MPDVs, the frontdoor collective are a network of delivery service partners that provide dependable last-mile delivery experience, with founders and executives with experience from FedEx, Walmart, XPO, Amazon, Instacart and the U.S. military. With more than 100 franchisees with experience in delivering for companies like Amazon, XPO, Axlehire and Ontrac, the company, aims to expand that to 300 franchisees by the end of this year link. Surpassing 9,500 non-binding pre-orders across lifestyle vehicle, pickup track and multi-purpose delivery vehicle link Showcasing its vehicles at various events including the ACT Expo and Cars & Coffee (both of which were attended by some of the amazing folks at the canoo subreddit who attended, took detailed notes/pictures and shared it with everyone), and receiving invites to others such as the LA Auto show link. Part 5 – Financials and Valuation Before looking at Canoo/Competitors, here are some analyst PTs R.F. Lafferty - $19 link H.C. Wainright - $15 link Bank of America - $5 (can’t find the article at the moment but I’m sure I’ve seen it somewhere) Average = $13, current SP = $6.7 As of Canoo’s second quarter 10Q, the company had cash on hand of $563.6 million link, which according to the company is more than sufficient to cover the cost of bringing its first products to markets link. The company could raise $273M from warrants if the SP is greater than $18 for 20 out of 30 days. At a pre-revenue stage there’s not too much to say in this department, other than to note that value of a couple of orders: Over 9,500 non-binding preorders – which if they are followed through with would be worth at least $313,500,00 (assuming 9,500 orders of the cheapest vehicle which is the base model MPDV). 10,000 MPDVs for the frontdoor collective which would be worth at least $330,000,000 (assuming cheapest MPDV). As far as valuations go, let’s divide the pre-revenue EV manufacturers into tiers for an easier look – based on their market cap. I’m sure some are missing because I only took a few, let me know and I’ll add them in later. These market caps were taken within a few moments of each other on 9/21 from yahoo finance. Lucid Motors – $41.23B, 11,000 pre-orders, delivery delayed to fall 2021 Nikola Corporation - $4.25B, lowered delivery guidance of 25/50 vehicles for 2021 Fisker Inc - $3.917B, >17,000 pre-orders, value of $637,483,000 Faraday Future - $3.66B, 300 FF 91 Vehicles, value of $54,000,000 delivery in 2022 Canoo – $1.63B, 19,500 pre-orders (9,500 individual + 10,000 front door collective), value of $643,500,000, delivery fall 2022 for LV, 2023 for MPDV Company A (market cap too low, has a DOJ investigation ongoing and issued a going concern for whether it would have cash to make it to production) - $1.2B Just looking at a couple of examples here it would seem that Canoo is undervalued purely on a pre-orders/revenue perspective. Fisker and Faraday Future, which are both expected to deliver in 2022 as is the case with Canoo, have over double the market cap despite Canoo having similar preorder value (compared to Fisker) or much higher (compared to Faraday Future). Haven’t done a cash flow analysis of every company but even taking into consideration Fisker having $400M more in cash on hand source, there’s a significant discrepancy. Faraday Future meanwhile has less than half of Canoo’s cash on hand at $230M link. Part 6 – Bear Case With anything pre-revenue, the biggest issue is always going to be do we have enough cash to get the product off the ground imo. I could write a really long paragraph but yea that’s pretty much it in a sentence. Since I’m on the bullish side for the company, I’ll lay out a few reasons why I think Canoo won’t be running out of $$$ before it comes to market – these have mostly been stated here and there throughout this document but I’ll summarize them below: As of Canoo’s second quarter 10Q, the company had cash on hand of $563.6 million which according to the company is more than sufficient to cover the cost of bringing the Lifestyle Vehicle to market. Oklahoma is providing an incentive package that totals over $300 million, and may kick in millions more based on whether Canoo hits or exceeds a target of hiring military veterans to make up 10 percent of the workforce at the facility. EV funding is a significant portion of the upcoming budget, this is less grounded than the others but there is assumedly some hopium that Canoo would be able to receive some federal support if needed. The company could take on debt to assist in getting to production – H.C. Wainwright in their coverage indicated that they expect $500M to $525M in funding could be raised in debt to 2023. Tony has previously stated that they are looking for as non-dilutive an approach as possible, and given the current SP it wouldn’t make much sense to go the additional equity route. In May, the SEC opened a fact-finding inquiry into Canoo as it did with many former EV SPACs, unlike others such as NKLA and (Company A) – nothing further has come as of yet, nor have any DOJ investigations been launched. Part 7 – SI and Squeeze Potential I know y’all have just been waiting for this so I’ll get right down to it. Famously developed by the esteemed /u/pennyether, the SMELL system is going to help us take a look at some key numbers that’ll help understand GOEV’s squeezability. Short Interest – 31.8 million shares, 32% of free float Market Cap – $1.63 Billion, not big enough that it’s immovable, not small enough that shorts would be able to cover without investing a decent amount of capital Extremely Memeable – I mean… GOEV, like Go… EV, idk I think it ticks off the memeability criteria Low Liquidity – Average volume per yahoo finance is 2.7M shares, which is 2.7% of the free float so any inflow will cause the share price to move pretty significantly. Over the last quarter, it seems that institutions have been loading up on Canoo for cheap, with institutional inflows of $177M and only $2.56M sold link Low Risk (IV) – Yep, current IV is 77.1% for 9/24 and 10/1 options. Please do NOT consider this financial advice, like at all, but if you’re one of the folks who look to just buy options for the sake of contributing to a gamma squeeze, take a look at the post by /u/ChemaKyle on how buying far OTM options and how it’s not the best idea if you want the MMs to hedge. There’s not much of a need to hedge vs something that doesn’t have a ramp up and no OI at the ATM values. I’d agree with his/her post and the commentators that buying ATM options and the underlying shares would have a greater chance at causing a gamma squeeze, but this is something you should research and do your own DD on as well based on your risk tolerance and investment threshold. Part 8 – TL;DR The global EV market is expected to be valued at $725.1 Billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 27.19% from $171.26 in 2021, with total EV sales growing from 2.5 million in 2020 to 11.2 million in 2025, then reaching 31.1 million by 2030. EVs would secure approximately 32 per cent of the total market share for new car sales. The US electric vehicles market is now expected to reach 6.9 million unit sales by 2025, up 5x from 1.4 million unit sales forecast for 2020, due to government incentives driving EV ownership. President Biden is seeking a pledge from auto manufacturers that would see EVs make up 40% - 50% of new U.S. vehicle sales by 2030, to support this EV tax credits jump to $12,500 in the proposed $3.5 trillion budget blueprint Democrats passed a couple of weeks ago. In August, the Senate in a non-binding amendment narrowly voted in favor of prohibiting taxpayers from claiming EV tax credits if they make more than $100,000 annually or if vehicles cost more than $40,000. Either way, this is huge for Canoo which is offering base models of the Lifestyle Vehicle and MPDV at submitted by
