Google Nest Learning says furnace is heating but it isn’t
I’ve been having some issues with my furnace since installing the Google Nest Learning thermostat. Occasionally, when the thermostat enters Stage 2 heat, the furnace doesn’t actually come on. I can hear it making a clicking sound as if trying to come on, but it doesn’t. The Nest seems to think the furnace is on because it doesn’t show any error messages and continues to say the furnace is in heating mode. I have a conventional, forced air, gas furnace. I have attached a video of the sound it is making when experiencing the issue described above. I will reply to this post with photos of the furnace and my Nest wiring as well. Looking to replace OG Learning Thermostat with something else. It worked with no C-Wire, but very confused why the newer ones now require it
So, the Google discontinuation of service has screwed me with high heat bills when I'm not home, so I'm looking to replace my OG Learning thermostat with something new in my apartment. The only wires going in to it are the W1 and Rh, no C-wire. Without a C-wire, this has worked for the the 6 years I've lived in my apartment without issue. But recently, I installed the newer gen, plastic Nest Thermostats in my parents house, and those didn't last more than a week without a C-Wire. Every new option I look at says it requires a C-wire as well. So two questions: What are recs on new, simple smart thermostats that won't require a C-wire? I'm just looking to be able to change temp on my phone, and not too much more. For my own curiosity, why does this 10 year old thermostat not need power, meanwhile, all these newer one seem to require it? I only use it for heat, so it would go months+ in the summer without the heat cycling on, so I'm very confused. Nest learning thermostats with heat pump and air handler
Hi Nest community, I need help with correctly setting up my system with the Nest learning thermostats. I noticed that my system is not running very efficiently so I called up the HVAC guy who installed my system. I was told that my system has a heat pump with air handler. The air handler has some heating coil to assist heating in extreme cold. But it was supposed to run together with the heat pump. In the google home app when it switch to alt. heat, the heat pump was shut off. So it is not correct behavior. He said he works more on ecobee thermostats and do not know how to configure the Nest so he couldn't help. Can anyone help me understand what I can do about this? Rheem Endeavor Line Classic Plus Series Gas Furnaces (R962V0603A17M4SCAP) fully compatible with a Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)?
I was talking to a HVAC installer and they said that if I use a Google Nest thermostat with my Rheem Endeavor Line Classic Plus Series Gas Furnaces (R962V0603A17M4SCAP) I won't get the full capabilities because the two-stage furnace with the variable speed motor needs an Ecobee to run properly. He said the Ecobee thermostat they'd install is needed so it can directly control the variable‑speed blower and two‑stage gas valve - essentially “directing traffic” inside the furnace - so the system actually delivers the efficiency and comfort it was designed for. Nest Learning Thermostat is solely for corporate profits. They don’t provide Support.
I purchased my home in September of 2023. A Google Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation came with it. I have been on hold awaiting an agent for nearly two hours. Their AI outgoing b.s. generator keeps suggesting that I leave them a message and an agent will call. That, in my long experience is a LIE. I’ve spent hours and hours of my life trying to get the damned thing to stay online. That also involved dozens of Network Resets and even a few Factory Resets. Nest Support has an incredibly long wait time for an agent (over two hours today—their call back feature is also fake; if they have ever called me back, they never bothered to prove it by leaving voicemail, and my phone would show any missed calls). One part of this extended drama was Google Fiber completely replaced my drop, modem and WiFi. They said, “That will fix the issues with disconnects.” It did not. That process also completely disrupted every device I had using WiFi, because the installer demanded that I also change the SSID (WiFi access point name) AND he made me change my password to have no special characters (as if I had been at fault for creating an allowed name with a space in it, and an allowed strong password). Finally, I got so fed up with the 3rd generation product I decided to buy a new 4th generation thermostat. That involved a hugely disappointing process over almost an entire month (December 2025), including Nest telling me that I was getting a “free Nest Mini” (but only because they required a paid one with my order). After I complained about them telling me one amount but then charging my bank card a much higher amount (causing an overdraft to my checking account—something I just didn’t do or want), they said they were sending me an “appeasement credit card for $25”. Naturally, I have not seen that theoretical appeasement. Apparently LYING to customers is a new “normal”. After a smooth process installing the 4th generation thermostat in about 30 minutes (I have a lot of tech expertise, BTW), this thing has read Connected quite solidly ever since. BUT NOW, the Gemini AI keeps insisting it’s being reported Offline! I’ve asked Nest Support if they can help me solidify the device by setting its MAC address on my router, they said, “No.” Hmm. This feels like a conspiracy against me, after so many months of poor service and unreliable information from Nest products. I have lodged complaints about my Google TV User Interface being oppressive and working against the interests of users (by demanding surveillance of my local TV viewing history before “allowing” me, the owner of the TV, to access Antenna stations) with Google, Philips et al. If this is how Google retaliates (by messing around with my home living environment), that is unacceptable! I’m not paranoid. I’m justifiably angry at an increasingly dismissive yet simultaneously repressive corporate oligarchy here in the USA. Big fish eats small fish. Consumers? An inconvenient reality. Their upper-management executives (I presume) don’t ever have to try using their own systems from the typical user’s POV. Now watch this oligarchy mess gradually melt down under its own dirty, labor-hating foolishness. Cause and effect: it even affects those execs who refuse to see it. Until their jobs are AI’d, too. My New Year’s resolution is to stop enabling greedy lazy people to victimise me. AI is NO SUBSTITUTE for actual humans, and it never will be! This post took me over 20 minutes to compose. Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen Short cycling furnace
I have a Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen that's been short cycling my furnace lately (runs about 5 minutes, turns off and turns on again and repeats until I turn down the thermostat). Talked to Google support and they recommended to get a Nest Power Connector as the thermostat may be drawing some power from the R line (R and W wire only setup). I used to have a 1st or 2nd gen Nest which only runsand it never short cycled until had I upgraded to this thermostat. Tried to install a smart thermostat twice and neither worked. Help requested.
I recently moved into my first home a condo ,and I tried to install a smart thermostat without having any experience with HVAC systems. I bought a google nest thermostat snow, but while setting it up I was told it wasn’t compatible. I bought a ecobee smart thermostat essential and after installing ,it would not turn on. I suspect my C wire does not put out enough voltage to power it. My plan is to buy a nest learning thermostat 3rd gen due to compatibility and because it has a battery. If anyone has advice on if this the right choice or if I should seek professional help, it will be greatly appreciated. Need Help with basic Nest Thermostat Installation - Google Home App doesn't find it
I'm at my wit's end. I am upgrading from a 2nd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat to a new, basic Nest Thermostat, and I can't get the Google Home app to find the thermostat. I followed the instruction with connecting the wires and had everything ready to go. But no matter what, when I try to connect the Google Home app, the thermostat is not found. I have restarted my modem/router, reinstalled the Google Home App, uninstalled the Nest app, rebooted my phone, and removed the batteries from the thermostat for a while. My internet connection is stable, I have 2.4ghz enabled, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi work without issue in my house. I thought that perhaps I had a defective unit, so I purchased another one and had the exact same result. The app will not find the device. It continues to show "Continue setup in the Google Home App". I don't know what to do with this anymore. Has anyone run into this before? Is this perhaps related to my wiring? Google Nest Learning Thermostat
I have a question regarding the system in our office. I have a dual-fuel system. It uses a heat pump and auxiliary LP furnace for when the outside temperatures drop below freezing. Three years ago I installed a Google Nest Gen 3 Learning thermostat that allowed me to have the thermostat automatically switch to auxillary heating depending on the outside temp versus me actually having to flip the switch as I did on the old thermostat. Today I had a tech come out and tell me my thermostat has gone bad because these Nest thermostats are notorious for going bad and failing to send a signal to the O-wire (I believe is what he said). He said he doesn't like the Nest thermostats for this reason. He offered a Honeywell T6 thermostat that he said has an outside air sensor which does the same thing. I do see that Google has come out with a Gen 4 since I bought mine. Does anyone know if the Gen 4 models perform better/last longer? I don't want to invest in another Google Nest if it's just going to do the same thing 3-years down the road. I also saw the Honeywell RTH9600WF based on a quick Google search for "best dual-fuel thermostat". It was ranked as number one with the Google Nest Gen 4 Learning thermostat at #2. Upgraded to a New Nest Thermostat and Heating works sporadically
BLUF: I just upgraded to a NEST Learning Thermostat 4.8, and with the first cold weather the system is not providing warm air consistently. I want to make sure the Nest is right before I call the HVAC guys. Restting the HVAC via the breaker box causes temporary warmth. Earlier this year I upgraded from an older Nest to a new model, and I am not certain I got the wiring carried over correctly. "Did you take a picture before you took down the old Nest?" Yes, yes I did. In the installation app. And then I had to walk away from the installation for a bit, and when I came back, the app had timed out and flushed the photo. So lesson learned - don't trust Google apps. Night before last was the first "cold" weather (upper 30s F) and the heat did not cut on. So I went to see what was going on with the Nest. Hardware: Nest: v4.8, S/W 2.3-2 O/B set to O Heat pump: Carrier 50EZ-A36---30TP Behavior: System failed to heat overnight. System would periodically say "Heating starts in X:XX" and the fan would blow for a few minutes, then cycle over and over again. Resetting the heat pump via the breaker box would make it blow warm air (89 deg F) temporarily, but it then reverts to "room temperature" (67-69 deg F). The Nest display occasionally displays error code n419, which is a broken link for Google but the Internet says is an error code for failure to communicate with a Heat Link...which I do not have installed. I've re-seated all the wires to confirm they are properly connected, and re-stripped at least one to ensure that there was an adequate length of wire present. Right now the display has an "alert" ( (!) ) icon at the bottom, but it's not clear what it is trying to alert me to, except that is about to start another heating cycle. Ordered, Received & Upgraded Nest Thermostat from 2nd Gen to 4th Gen

It's unfortunate Google sunset the wireless support for this device. There were documented security issues with Gen 1 but there did not appear to be known issues with Gen 2. The thought of being asked to walk over to the thermostat to change the temperature made the $160 expenditure less annoying. My Nest 4th Gen order was received a few days later on October 25th. I waited to install it after reading some comments about the Trim plate being a different shape requiring my wall to be painted. The comments were correct, the Gen 4 Trim Plate is a different shape. I did see a video in a AI search where the Nest Gen 4 was installed with the existing square Trim plate so I decided to install it. The screw hole on the Thermostat base Gen 2 and Gen 4 are in the same position so it is possible. The only issue was that I had to remove the Gen 2 Trim plate screws. In my case, the Gen 2 Trim plate was firmly held in by last coating of paint so it worked! It's not an ideal solution, but the next time we have time to paint the wall, we'll install the new Gen 4 Trim plate. So I will save the Gen 4 Trim plate and Steel mounting plate and mounting screens for a future project. The Thermostat base wires were easily removed and inserted into a new base. In my case, the Gen 2 and Gen 4 configuration were exactly the same. The new Nest Gen 4 Thermostat was setup using the Google Home App that I had never previously used. You had to scan the OCR code on the Thermostat and the Sensor during setup. The installation asks a number of questions and reviews your wire settings. In my case, the Google Home App setup of the Nest Gen 4 was successful and the next step was to install the remote sensor. The Sensor QR code was on the plastic tab that was pulled out to activate the battery. The QR code is very small and might require you to bring it into a room with good lighting. The Sensor can be placed in another room and additional sensors can be purchased. I did not have any other Nest devices so I deleted the Nest App on my phone. Overall, now that I am familiar with the wire settings, it might be easier to switch to another brand. hey all. recently moved to northern california, into the basement unit of a friend's place. she recently had a break-in downstairs here where some scooters/bikes got stolen and has been trying to upgrade her security and i kind of showed up in the middle of it. here's as much detail as i can offer and then what i think our goals are. upstairs, front entry: Google Nest Doorbell -> Yale Assure 2 lock to enter foyer -> Yale Z-Lock to enter her unit - there are tenants in a second unit that just use a physical key - there are also two windows right next to the front door - she has a Nest thermostat and a Google Nest Hub Max and generally uses the Google Home app to control a lot of things like lights, AC, music, etc. upstairs, back patio: Google Nest Cam Outdoor with floodlights, Yale Assure 2 going into her unit, separate door entering tenants unit downstairs, street entry: - she just installed a reolink Argus PT Ultra above the garage - a new garage keypad entry to her Liftmaster - Yale Assure 2 on door entry into downstairs basement foyer - Google Nest Doorbell on door entry into downstairs basement foyer - YoLink Uno Wifi Camera in the downstairs unit where the aforementioned burglary occurred - there's also a Yale Assure 2 on the door into the unit i'm living in, inside the foyer, and then there's a small backyard and stairs that lead up to the patio, with another Yale Assure 2 on my door going out to the patio. I am currently staring at the below list of equipment which she's yet to install: -3x YoLink DoorSensors -2x YoLink Speaker Hubs -2x YoLink Siren Alarms -1x ReoLink Argus PT Ultra(yes another one) -1x ReoLink Lumus Pro - she thinks the burglary happened via the original Yale Assure 2 that was on the basement entry door, it was the type that had a physical key option as well and after seeing Lock Picking Lawyer pick it four times in 4 minutes we think that's how it happened. so all Yale Assure 2's are fingerprint / numberpad only. - none of the Yale Assure 2's have the Wifi Smart Module she did enough recon to know she was better off doing this on her own as opposed to paying for SimpliSafe or doing an ADT contract so I think that's a good thing?! but i'm trying to get us to the promised land: • we don't want to have a monthly fee or contract, certainly not above and beyond whatever she's paying for Google Nest storage(not much) • we want to be able to live view the camera feeds remotely, to check in both on the property and the dogs, etc • in an ideal world we want to be able to record 24/7 and keep between 3-7 days of footage. this seems to be a laughable idea for the easy-install consumer product lines based on what i know? • moreover, is there no way to get all these systems to work together? from what little recon i've done, even trying to learn how to deal with HomeAssistant wouldn't get us there between Google/Yale/YoLink/ReoLink • would love to figure out what to do security wise for the basement foyer + garage. it's tricky because both her, myself, and the tenants(a family of 4) come and go from that foyer/garage are all the time, for bikes/scooter storage, to access the W/D in the garage, etc. the alarms aren't really useful unless you 'arm' the system and that's a pain in the ass to do for 6 people, multiple times a day. is there a way that these cameras can trigger an alarm or a vocal loop if the face isn't recognized upon entry? or something like that. • if we are currently SOL based on what we currently have, i'd love suggestions! i.e. "you should sell all the YoLink stuff and convert everything to ReoLink and use their app for all things security and just keep the Google Home for music and AC." or whatever. it seems crazy to me that there's not a one stop shop solution to this kind of thing and i'm sure all these companies envisioned starting out that they would be that thing but alas. submitted by /u/scadler to r/homesecurity [link] [comments]

Nest Learning Thermostat Gen 4
I purchased and installed two 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostats. One is working correctly, but the other is always off by about five degrees, running hotter than I want. I set the thermostat to 70° and used an independent, accurate thermometer that reads 75°. I am also using the sensors that came with the thermostats, one per device, placed in an area away from exterior walls, windows, or drafts. They are also approximately at the same height as the thermostats. When I select the hallway thermostat that has the issue, I see the following: Mode: Heat Sensors: Hallway Thermostat (this thermostat) and Kitchen sensor are selected. Hold: not used Fan: not used Indoor Temperature: 72° Indoor Humidity: 54% Outdoor Temperature: 52° Schedule: Using Heat Only (sensors = this thermostat and kitchen sensor) Week AM: 70˚ heat, 73˚ cooling, sensors 2, all week, 4:30 am Week Late AM: 70˚ heat, 73˚ cooling, sensors 2, all week, 7:00 am Week PM: 62˚ heat, 73˚ cooling, sensors 2, all week, 6:30 PM Sleep: 62˚ heat, 73˚ cooling, sensors 2, all week, 11:00 PM Energy Dashboard: seems ok Nest Sense: Smart Schedule: Off Energy Shift: Not used at this time Seasonal Savings: Inactive Natural Heating and Cooling: On Enable Natural Heating & Cooling: On. Window Reminders: Off Adaptive Comfort and ECO: Off Early-On: Heating, On (1-hour), and cooling off at this time Airwave: on (used only for cooling) Humidity Helper: Off True Radiant: Off Sunblock: On Temperature Presets: All looks ok Safety Temp: Heat 40˚ Cooling Off The other settings don’t matter right now. After noticing the 5-degree delta, I tried a few things: I removed the kitchen sensor from the equation and noticed that the thermostat's temperature sensor reading was 72˚ and the heat setting was 70˚. I also saw that the kitchen started to cool down. The independent thermometer dropped from 75˚ to 72˚ over a few hours. The thermostat was set to 70˚, and its internal sensor was showing 71˚. So the sensor may be the problem, but why a 5˚ delta? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Maybe someone from Google can chime in to help. Just bought Nest thermostat 3 weeks ago, not a clue which generation it is.
We finally made the switch to a Nest thermostat from our 1970s style thermostat before going on vacation. We bought it at Lowes because it was the least expensive one we could afford. We went with just the basic one, not a learning thermostat (can't afford, and don't need with someone home all day). I have no idea which generation this thing is, or how to tell. The box doesn't specify, and I can't find anything in any of the "about" info, either. I personally never would've cared which gen I had, except when I came to this forum to research an unrelated question, I'm seeing a ton of posts about Google turning some Nest products into "dumb" thermostats in October. Now I'm in a bit of a panic, because I had a professional install it on top of the cost of the thermostat itself, and I'm worried I just spent all that money on something that won't work as intended in a couple of months. What a piece of shit. Brand new 4th gen learning + has only been installed one day and it has disappeared from Google Home. Have restarted the app, rebooted phone, and rebooted thermostat. Thermostat still shows connected to WiFi with a strong signal. So frustrating what Google has done to Nest.

Hack a Nest Gen 1 or 2 thermostat so its usable after Google bricks it in October?
I am asking if its possible to make it so all the functionality of these thermostats can be used after google turns off the servers. The thermostat will work manually like my parents 40 year old thermostat, just nothing connected. The unit will still have an internal thermistor, wifi device, working screen, all without a connection and no app interface. I don't know what the solution would be but the result of the hack would be that you could use the thermostat through Alexa, GHome, or Home Assistant or with a dongle that attaches it to Matter. Smart Thermostat: Is Nest worth it in the UK?
I’m wanting to get a smart thermostat installed in my house and was thinking about the Nest because I like the learning feature however, the 4th Gen hasn’t been released in the UK and it doesn’t look like there is any sign of it coming. Happy to get the 3rd gen but my question is: Is nest still a viable option in the UK or is there a risk that Google will abandon the market? Is Hive the next best, or are there other good options? Google Nest issue: furnace shutting off
So I moved into my new home and replaced my old thermostat with a Google nest learning 3rd generation. Everything worked perfectly fine prior to the change, but after installing the nest, I ran a furnace heads up test on the equipment only to find out that my system keeps short cycling. I bought a new air filter and replaced it but I still have the same issue. What am I doing wrong? In desperate need of help: Roommate with medical condition desperately needs to stop Nest Thermostat from dropping the temp in the morning
My roommate (I'm his friend but also his live-in caregiver) is a spinal cord injury survivor. He's paralyzed from the chest down and has trouble maintaining his body temperature. He had a Nest Thermostat installed in his room and a Learning Thermostat installed in the kitchen to allow him to control temperatures from his iPhone while he's in bed. He doesn't want to use any Comfort or Eco or Sleep presets -- he just wants to set the heat at 79 and for the thermostat to maintain 79 permanently until he opens the app and changes the setting. The problem? At either 6 or 8 in the morning, the set temperature will switch to 56 degrees. The temperature only has enough time to drop a little before he wakes up and turns it back up, so it never reaches close to 56, but it does get too cold for him. I have looked at EVERYTHING. I cannot figure out how to tell it not to let the temp drop and just STAY set at 79 like a non-smart thermostat. The safety temp is 45, so it doesn't seem to be anything to do with that. Calling tech support got me a woman in India, and the windows that opened when I hit the buttons she said to hit did not match what she said to hit next. In the temperature presets, I can change the max and min temp for the Eco mode, but I can't find any option that equals "never enter Eco mode under any circumstances" or "never change the set temp of your own volition; wait until I open the app and change it with my fingers." What are we missing? Why is it doing this? How do we stop it? Does Google have techs who can come to your house and do what you need done like ADT does for when a window sensor falls off? That don't cost $130 per hour? Please help us tell this Google Nest Thermostat to stay set at 79 and not start dropping to 56 at 6 or 8 in the morning. Please, somebody! Help me!
