The road is growing…
The road on one side of our corner lot 1890 Folk Victorian Farmhouse is being widened. During this process we learned that our property line is 8.3ft from the double window wall visible in the photos. The rest of the land is part of the county’s right-of-way and is not actually ours. The new, widened road isn’t taking any of our land and we really can’t fight it, so it’s happening. The row of privacy trees that have been around for 70+ years are being destroyed. The widened road will end 23ft from our living room wall (double windows). Our master bedroom is directly above the living room too. So since our century home isn’t the first to have modern roads encroach on its space….how has everyone else manufactured privacy for themselves with minimal space to work with? Help me make this living room elegant and cozy
I’m buying a new house and trying to figure out how to design this living room. I love how open, bright, and airy it is, but I’d love it to be more welcoming/cozy. I’m going for an elevated but comfortable vibe, something that still looks nice but is actually a space where we want to sit. I will need all new furniture, the picture included the sellers furniture and decor. The carpet needs replaced, and I thought about sticking with a light color, but I’m open to thoughts on it, too! I’m also thinking about painting the stair railing black. Style-wise I’m drawn to: - Neutral tones (cream, warm beige, soft browns, olive) - Clean but not too modern - Cozy textures (throws, pillows, etc.) - Not overly trendy or farmhouse Would love specific product recommendations, too, if you have them! submitted by /u/Ok-Professional8451 to r/interiordecorating [link] [comments]

Sunken living room inspo
Just bought a beauuuutiful 1925 Tudor style house with gorgina parquet floors and inlays. Looking for ideas or just Instagram accounts for style inspo, specifically for this giant sunken living room (first pic) . I like a mix of traditional and mid century modern (see inspiration pics from Pinterest). Absolutely no farmhouse or modern!! I want to keep the original character of the house. submitted by /u/Putrid_Instance_9004 to r/interiordecorating [link] [comments]

Beer Traditions; The Final Version
Edit to add: One user (TruckstopBJs) involved in a side argument has openly said they troll for reactions (Bc it’s Reddit, anonymous and sometimes hilarious to watched/ I certainly enjoy the occasional Reddit trolling). This post has been updated in good faith based on substantive feedback. Let’s keep it about beer. Special thanks to theSTZAloc, Hour-Promotion-2496, jaymatthewbee, Bosbouwerd, EminenceGris3 / Incognito-DeVito / Remarkable-Ad155, and Nero-is-Missing and spiraltrinity for their useful contributions! World class A country with a still-living, nationally coherent beer culture that (1) created multiple foundational styles or production/serve systems, (2) materially shaped how beer is brewed or served elsewhere, and (3) maintained continuity at scale rather than as a museum piece or niche revival. Early pilsner regions Countries inside the Central European lager belt where the pilsner/modern lager model took root early, spread regionally, and remained culturally dominant. The key is regional continuity of the “lager discipline” rather than modern craft prestige. They may not be the main global originators, but they are part of the original engine-room that normalised pale lager. Continuity beer nations Places with an identifiable indigenous tradition that survived industrialisation and remained a living practice into the modern era, even if it is not globally dominant. It is not “we used to brew”; it is “a distinctive local method/style persisted and you can still find it as part of the culture”. Beer drinking tradition, macro lager plus modern craft Beer is a mainstream drink, modern beer culture is dominated by pale lager produced at scale, and the “craft layer” is lively but largely built on imported templates (US/UK craft model, international style guidelines). The country can be technically excellent and have great breweries, but the national system is not an old, distinctive brewing civilisation. Some beer drinking tradition (macro lager + modern craft) Beer is present and often popular, and there is a mix of macro lager and some craft, but it is weaker as a national identity and/or more regionally patchy. Craft exists, sometimes good, but it has less depth, less continuity, and less system-level influence than the tier above. New beer nations Modern beer culture is either relatively recent, heavily revived after interruption, or largely imported in structure and styles. Beer may sell in huge volumes, but the distinctive native “system” is thin, discontinuous, or not meaningfully influential outside its borders. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Notes on classifications: The Czech and related German tradition is the most influential and has excellent beer. Lager is best brewed at large scale, which means it is the most profitable and therefore the most marketed and sold. Belgian beer is arguably top. The brewing style does not scale up well but bottling means is has the global caché, particularly with beer snobs. Even here, Jupiler (a lager) is the most popular beer. The UK cask beer does not travel, you have to go to the UK. Even then it had to survive a concerted effort to kill it off in the 1970s but its survival is tribute to its greatness. Cask conditioning is genuinely unique at scale. Nowhere else has a living, oxygen-sensitive product distributed daily to tens of thousands of pubs. The UK created multiple globally foundational styles: porter, stout, pale ale, IPA, mild, barley wine. Even modern American craft is largely a reinterpretation of British styles with louder hops. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia are recognised as part of the pilsner tradition before it went global. To a greater or lesser extent, they have strong wine cultures also. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Finland (sahti), Ireland (stout as a default culture), Norway (farmhouse and kveik-adjacent overlaps, plus continuity), imprint), Lithuania, and South Africa feature in this tir as although there is domination of macro brew, there is something distinct enough. Ireland suffers from its heritage being badly compromised by industrialisation in the C20th. Ales such as Kilkeeny and Smithwicks were replaced with keg namesakes and even Guinssess became a keg beer. I acknowledge there is no clear divide here and a few nations just missed out: Sweden (traditional farmhouse remnants but weaker global Latvia, Estonia (old farmhouse/“kept alive” traditions, but not major global influence) ----------------------------------------------------------------- The next teir is defined by the USA beer scene, where there is a beer tradition, that largely became subsumed by macro pilsner. The USA is the anchor. Invented modern craft as a movement (brewpubs, taprooms, hop-forward ales, barrel programmes, style explosion). Technically excellent at the high end, but historically interrupted by Prohibition and built almost entirely on British, Czech and Belgian foundations. Immense creative influence, weak pre-20th-century continuity. Denmark had a vital part in beer history (yeast isolation, lab brewing, QC), Denmark today is very similar to the USA: macro lager dominance plus strong US-style craft uptake. Australia and Canada have beer is socially central, macro lager ruled for decades, modern craft follows US/UK templates. Good breweries, little indigenous style development. Strong scene, weak historical distinctiveness. Switzerland has kots of breweries per capita, but mostly small, modern, and stylistically derivative. Macro lager still frames consumption. Density does not equate to tradition. Netherlands is back after the Dutch posters did themselves proud last time. Historically consolidated into industrial lager, now lively craft. Some Trappist presence, but nationally the system is Heineken-first with Belgian imports filling the gaps. Again it is modern craft layer on top of macro. Many were upset that Poland was not at a higher tier. It shoudl not be: - no surviving indigenous system comparable to Czech lager, Belgian fermentation, or UK cask - Grodziskie is historically interesting but effectively revived, not continuous - Baltic porter is adopted and adapted, not Polish-origin - no dispense or fermentation model exported elsewhere - no system-level influence on global brewing That does not preclude a very healthy and interesting beer scene today. ----------------------------------------------------------------- For the next tier, I know beer has been brewed for thousands of years. Old beer was very close to bread and goes back almost as far. But, often beer was not the main cultural touchstone of these cultures. They may have very impressive regions, but not as a nation as a whole. Such is the crudity of national borders. Italy is close to the tier above. Italian craft is genuinely good and sometimes innovative, but it’s essentially Belgian/UK/US techniques applied by Italian producers in a wine-first culture. Other similar nations include Spain and Portugal. Brazil and Argentina have a macro market, fast-growing craft sector built on imported styles. No native beer system with international impact, but scale and modern adoption put it squarely here. Sweden is historically spirits-led, with beer secondary and heavily regulated. Modern scene is mostly imported craft structure layered on top of pale macro lager. Serbian beer exists but has never been culturally dominant. Mostly industrial lager inherited from Austro-Hungarian influence, plus a young craft scene. France has strong regional pockets (Alsace, Nord, Flanders-adjacent areas), but nationally wine-led. Beer traditions fragmented and marginalised by industrial consolidation. Modern craft is real, but largely Belgian/US influenced. Russia has a large macro market with disrupted continuity (imperial collapse, Soviet era). Craft resurgence is recent and stylistically imported. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The new nations have a lot in common. Beer is not historically the dominant national drink, modern beer culture is overwhelmingly macro lager first, and craft scenes are recent, urban, and mostly stylistically imported (US IPA, pastry stout, British pale, etc). They are “new beer nations” in the sense that beer became culturally central only in the industrial / post-industrial period. Japan specifically is different. Japanese macro brewing is world-class in: - flavour stability over long distribution chains - yeast handling and consistency - dissolved oxygen control in packaging - microbiological control - process repeatability across multiple sites Their lagers are not exciting, but they are exceptionally clean, stable, and controlled. Warm a Japanese macro lager and it usually stays drinkable. Warm many others and they fall apart. That is brewing science, not marketing. submitted by /u/Civil-Pineapple-5796 to r/tierlists [link] [comments]

Please make our living room beautiful
Posting for my mom: The room is ~24’ at its deepest and ~ 16’ wide. I’ve been in this house for 15 years and don’t know how to use the space. We’ve never really invested in nice furniture. I don’t like how bland and depressing this room is. We mainly use the space for watching TV at night and entertaining. I like “modern rustic” like restoration hardware. Not looking to redo the floors / walls / fireplace but open to anything else with a reasonable total budget submitted by

Recommendations for Living Room
Looking for some recommendations or inspiration for our upcoming living room Reno. It is an older home and we’re on a budget, but we like the organic modern, farmhouse and a hint of MCM styles. Help me escape ugly living room purgatory
I despise my living room. We’ve lived here for 5 years and struggled with what to do to this room. The pictures don’t do it justice, but the room is much longer than it is wide. It’s essentially an open concept connected to the dining area and kitchen. It feels uncomfortable, cluttered, and disjointed. My end goal is a comfy, moody space. I eventually want darker walls that complement the couch/loveseat but struggle with how to do so since the living room and kitchen share walls and are the same color right now. I feel like the fireplace needs to become the focal point of the room and I’d like to have our TV there but it’s too big to put above the mantel. There’s a ton of empty, awkward wall space that I’ve struggled to fill. The TV console and wall “decor” are remnants of a modern farmhouse phase from the apartment I had in 2019 that I can’t wait to get rid of. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want a living room that isn’t an eyesore. submitted by /u/puppiesandtequila to r/DesignMyRoom [link] [comments]

I don’t even know where to begin with my living room.
Purchased my first house about 8 months ago and I am still at a complete loss on what to do with my living room. I want a new couch, as this one is a section from my last place and does not fit in here. Also, I need furniture like end tables and a coffee table. I love the blue accent wall and the fireplace as the focal point, which is why I have my TV in the other corner. I dont want to block the window with a couch either. I know I need to pick a design style but I truly am at a loss and need help. I know for sure I do not like the farmhouse / all gray / modern style. Any input would be appreciated!!! How can we improve this apartment living/dining room? + Bonus pup pic
Hello! We are looking for some help on how to make this area feel more cohesive. It is a dual purpose room where we both lounge and dine. We are located in the US. First order of business: this is a rental apartment. So we can’t paint the walls, change light fixtures, crown molding, etc. We haven’t really found our style yet, and are open to almost all style suggestions! (See below). In terms of a scale from minimalism to maximalism, I’d say we are somewhere in the middle. My partner feels maximalism looks cluttered, and she has a strong preference towards white. I have made some progress on convincing her to like colors. Interior design styles preferences. This is by no means a complete or concrete list. DO Like: contemporary, mid-century modern, organic modern, japandi, transitional, twist on traditional (beetrootandblack Instagram), and I’m sure there is more. DON’T Like: boho, glam, farmhouse, coastal. A few changes we’ve talked about: Art or things for the walls. Changing the rug - we’ve had it for a few years, and not sure it’s doing us a service here. Feels like we could incorporate some more organic shapes - circles/roundness. Changing dining table - we love the table and it is special to us, but it might just not be working here. It was the first piece we bought when we started living together (second hand Pottery Barn table). Maybe change the white couch? - We like having two couches because it means we both have a space to be horizontal :) The bikes will be moved elsewhere. No plans to move the exercise bike (yet). Measurements Ceilings: 9.5ft Rectangular space: 17ft x 20ft Bay window space: 11.5ft x 3.5ft Table: 82” x 38” White couch: 89” x 38” Green couch: 95” x 37” Current space behind green couch: 11.5ft x 3.5ft TLDR: Help us create a more inviting and cohesive space in our Boston apartment. Our pup is a 13 year old mini Aussie. He’s still got lots of spunk, and loves to nap. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/UltimateZo to r/interiordecorating [link] [comments]

I’ve just seen my family’s abandoned old farm being explored by someone on TikTok. He shouldn’t have gone there
It’s late. I’m doing my usual - sitting in bed long past the time I need to be asleep, scrolling mindlessly through TikTok. It’s a bad habit, I know. But you’re here reading Reddit, right? I lazily flick the last watched video away - a cat wearing a helmet fashioned out of a melon - and a live feed takes its place. It’s dark, with torches or headlamps making almost a strobing effect in some crusty old building. Ghost hunters or something like that. Not my thing. I raise my finger to scroll again but at the last second something catches my eye that stops me dead. The camera pans past a black and white framed photograph on the wall. It’s my grandparents on their wedding day. I sit stock-still, watching intently as the camera moves forward. I would recognise that photo anywhere, having examined it countless times as a child visiting their farmhouse. It was my favourite picture out of any hanging on their walls. This TikTokker couldn’t be in my grandparents’ old farm, surely? It was true it had been left to fall into a state of disrepair after their passing. I look at their handle - Aband0nedExpl0rer305. I make a mental note to click on their page and see where else they have been, but for now cannot bring myself to look away from this feed, in case it disappears forever. They move further into the living room. A leather armchair, well worn in its day but now the cushions were sunken in and the fabric torn beyond repair. The fireplace, exposed stone and an enormous oak mantel - once the impressive focal point of the room - now warped and cracked. The lucky horseshoes that had hung from it litter the hearth, dull and lifeless. They had always been pride of place over the fire, polished and would glint in the firelight of an evening. The person holding the camera is speaking, I’d hardly noticed as I was so wrapped up in a cloud of nostalgia and outrage at this space being invaded. “There’s so many horseshoes around here,” he was saying. “They’re over door thresholds, there was one laid into the kitchen floor, and these ones look like they used to hang over the fireplace. Now I know this is a farm and they probably did have horses, but they are just everywhere. Now everyone knows horseshoes are known as a good luck charm, but unless you’re into your folklore you might not know that they also ward off evil spirits.” I roll my eyes - common knowledge. Another TikTokker claiming to be an expert on the paranormal. His observation does set off a small prickle on the back of my neck though. There were a lot of horseshoes at the farm. I tuck that bit of knowledge away for future reference. Many years ago they had horses, but since the advent of modern tractors and farming methods they were not needed and neither Granny nor Grandpa had any great love for horses that I was aware of. Granny had always been a tad superstitious though - horseshoes, lucky heather, four leaf clovers, that sort of thing. For the most part, I loved going to stay at Granny and Grandpa’s when I was small. Apart from going to the bathroom alone. The only bathroom was upstairs, at the furthest end of the house from the kitchen or living room. To a kid it felt like an epic journey. Going up wasn’t so bad. Once the door from the living room shut you would find yourself in the cool, quiet passageway, all sounds of life muffled by the thick wood. The air was so still you could hear a pin drop. You’d walk along then turn back 180 degrees to go up the stairs. The upstairs landing was split on two levels so you’d step down onto the back landing then take a right to get to the bathroom. It was going back down that was the problem. Since I was old enough to go to the bathroom unaccompanied - once I turned that corner and got to the top of the stairs, a feeling would hit, like an icy finger in the small of your back. Run. I would run down the stairs and back to the kitchen as quickly as my little legs could carry me. More than that, it was imperative that at no point did I turn and look back up at that landing. Bad things would happen if I looked back. As a child I couldn’t really express these feelings, but now as I remember it, it felt like a creeping black mass seeping out of the walls of that back landing, coalescing, and all it would take to give it a corporeal form would be a terrified look back from a fleeing child. Then I would heave open the wooden door and it felt like all the colour suddenly seeped back into the world, the warmth and noise of a busy family home flooding my senses. Like pressing play and the film restarts where it left off. In the live camera feed, they approach that solid oak door. It’s hanging on one hinge, slightly ajar and swaying almost imperceptibly. I notice before the cameraman says aloud that there is a large cast iron horseshoe - big enough for a Shire horse or a Clydesdale - nailed above the threshold that I don’t remember, but it suddenly feels important. Like a talisman thrown up in a last ditch effort to stop something. I grip my phone harder with a clammy hand, positive that they should not go deeper into the bowels of this house. I look at the comments flashing up. It’s so creepy. Seriously bad vibes. Did anyone else just see a shadow? With a shaky hand I start typing a comment, telling them not to go in there, to just leave. As if they will listen to me, just another voice in the throng. In my peripheral vision as I’m typing I can see the guy push open the door which gives way with a creak and just as I’m about to press send I hear his sharp intake of breath. “What the-?” I hear him whisper. I drop my phone onto the bed in shock. Standing side by side in the passageway are two gaunt figures dressed in nightgowns. They wear preternaturally wide grins which stretch their papery grey skin taut. Where their eyes belong are only dark pits, what could be boreholes straight into the inky depths of hell itself. Somehow worse than that, Granny and Grandpa were holding hands. It was unmistakably them despite their demonic manifestation. Though it’s only a second, it feels like I stare into those twisted faces for half an eternity. All hell breaks loose on camera. Aband0nedExpl0rer305 turns on his heel and runs back the way he came. The camerawork falls into disarray as he bolts for the exit, but I swear in that fraction of the second as his phone whips around the creepily wide grins on their faces twists into a grisly snarl. I am transfixed by my phone screen, listening to the TikTok guy’s heavy breathing and watching the torch flit around on screen, lighting up walls and floors at random as he makes a break for it. He’s close to the back door as long as he doesn’t turn the wrong way. Five, or six more paces and he’ll be out. Then shockingly loud on the little phone speakers is an ungodly screech which makes me jump about a foot off my bed. LIVE has ended The feed has just… gone. I tap the screen futilely. Nothing. Did he make it out? I search for his handle on the app and nothing comes up. I sit for a long time just staring into space, heart thumping. I should have commented sooner, as soon as I realised they were in that house, maybe that would have stopped them going any further. A notification pops up on my phone. A direct message on TikTok. Strangely, there’s no account name with the message. Come to us Very direct, no ambiguity there. I sigh, and reach for a notebook from my bedside table, to cross the latest attempt off the list. Communication with the (un)dead via the internet is a new development. An extra deep grave didn’t do the trick. Rocks in their mouths, black salt, holy water from Lourdes, a stake through the heart. Nothing keeps these two restless souls in their grave for long. We don’t know if it’s the land itself, a curse upon the family, or something else. Did they see that black thing I was so afraid of as a kid, was that the reason, or a symptom? I glance down the list of things yet to try - next up, decapitation of the corpses. I don’t relish the thought of that one. I fire off a quick text to my brother. Trouble at mill That’s the code. Code for ‘get your shovel, we’re off to dig up our old granny and grandpa again to see if we can finally get them to rest in peace like you’re supposed to’. The problem is, each time we try to end this and fail, every time they come back they are more… changed than before. The last time they climbed out of that grave they looked like themselves, only dead. Upsetting but to be expected. The nightmarish figures I have seen tonight were a world away from that. I worry we are giving them power, feeding them somehow. But we can’t just let them roam free. Especially when other people get caught in the crossfire. I think this is going to require some outside help. submitted by /u/feathers_and_fire to r/nosleep [link] [comments]
